About this listing
Our open floor plan house is a fantastic family and friend-centered location. With an amazing view of the water and the mountains that surround Juneau, and access to all the wonders of Southeast Alaska, our home is the perfect get-away.
Gorgeous family home overlooking the Gastineau Chanel, with views of Mt. Roberts and Mt. Juneau and full access to the rocky beach out front. Eagles, ravens, killer whales, and harbor seals are common visitors. Our home is two miles from downtown Juneau--just a short car ride or walk across the bridge. It's a three-bedroom family home containing one queen bed each in two rooms, and one full bed, plus floor/couch space in two separate living rooms. The rooms are 1960's small but our remodeled, open living area makes up for it. Enjoy a full kitchen complete with microwave, oven, warming oven, 5-burner stove, and lots of beautiful counter top space. We have a glass table for six guests plus a bar that seats six more and a four person pub table in the front living room. Our home includes a rustic, wood-fired hot tub. (It takes a a number of hours to get it up to temperature, but the view overlooking the water makes it worth waiting for.) We are also happy to offer any advice you need for things to do and see while you are here.
Juneau offers a plethora of outdoor activities including glacier hikes, mountain biking, cross country and downhill skiing, heli-skiing, fishing, beach combing, over 40 well-maintained hiking trails, mountains and water everywhere you look, and wildlife at every corner. As Juneau is surrounded by water on three sides and an ice field on the other, the only access to Juneau is via ferry or air plane, but Juneau has full taxi service and a public bus system. You can also rent a car here or transport your own via the Alaska State Ferry. Our house is on the main road system just two miles from downtown Juneau, 12 miles from the "valley" or airport area, and seven miles from the local ski area. Shopping, groceries, and restaurants are a five minute drive or 20 minute walk away. Come visit, but be warned, you might just pack your bags and move here.
Entire house--three bedrooms, two living rooms, kitchen and dining area, wireless internet, outdoor wood-fired hot tub, a front and back deck, and beach access. Our pantry has all of the essentials (spices, ingredients) and the kitchen, while not that of a gourmet cook, is begging to be used. As this is our year-round family home, we leave our belongings here but we're happy to clear out drawers and shelves for your stay. Part of the beauty of airbnb is that you get a cozy, lived-in home to relax in.
Interaction with Guests
I am available via (website hidden), or cell phone as much as a guest needs me to be. We are generally traveling when the house is rented out so we leave detailed notes about the house and an access code to the front door. We love to offer you ideas and advice for what to do and see here.
We live along the North Douglas waterfront, looking across the Gastineau Chanel at downtown Juneau nestled against Mt Roberts and Mt Juneau.
It's advisable to rent a car. Juneau is very spread out and, while we don't have very much in the way of roads, you don't want to miss any of it. There is a taxi service and public buses that run right in front of the house. Downtown Juneau is a 20 minute walk or a 5 minute drive. The airport and "valley" are 10 miles away.
Other Things to Note
We love entertaining so our home is a great gathering place and is very user-friendly. You will feel right at home.
Please no smoking. We do have a small dog, but he won't be here when you are. We have an apartment under our house so we ask that noise level is moderate after 11pm. Please have fun, and enjoy our home while we are off on our own adventure.
Very cool place. Eagles were flying right outside. Downtown is walkable. We hiked Mount Jumbo (Bradley) on Douglas, long but beautiful hike, about 5-6 hours up and down.
Home was perfect for our family - very clean, spacious home with all the amenities. Great location, great views, and wonderful hosts! Only possible drawback is the road noise from North Douglas Hwy.
This is a beautiful location and house. We felt very welcome and comfortable. It's very close to many hiking trails and downtown Juneau. We would return to this house, if available, again.
Oh yeah, this is the one. What a large and beautiful home and the location is great too. It's close to downtown with a wonderful view of the harbor.
Tonja was an absolutely wonderful and welcoming host. She's as sweet as can be, and was extremely concerned about our having a great time at her home and in Juneau in general -- a place she clearly takes real pride in and loves to share. She was fastidious about making sure the house was accommodating when we arrived, with everything perfectly cleaned, oodles of freshly cleaned towels brimming bathroom baskets, and even several handsome bouquets of flowers awaiting us.
The house was more than we expected. It has a very workable kitchen, at the center of an L-shaped living space with majestic views looking over Gastineau Channel. Until we got used to them by the 2nd or 3rd day, we all kept racing to the big windows or out on the balcony to watch the soaring bald eagles. The kitchen served our big group easily, and even was used happily and handily by a husband and wife chef duo we hired for several nights to pamper us by doing the cooking.
More than that, Tonja was incredibly caring and responsible. Even though she and her family were biking in Canada while we stayed at their home, and her cell service was spotty, she continually checked in to make sure everything was okay (it was), and left us with local contacts in the case of emergencies (there weren't any).
The house is only a short distance from the Juneau-Douglas bridge, making it perfectly positioned to get to any and everything in Juneau within minutes, yet giving us an ideal home base with a terrific view.
The look of the neighborhood is not snooty, high-falutin'. The homes are nice and upscale, but they have a comfortable lived-in quality, with pick-ups and boats in driveways. The friend of a friend who works for the state and lives farther north on Douglas Island in a more remote regions warned us when he drove past before we arrived that there is a radio tower very close by and visible, no doubt, from the windows. Yes, there is, but we hardly noticed it, and it did nothing to detract from the gorgeous view and our awesome time. In fact, the tower is a draw for bald eagles, so we spent plenty of time just gazing over at the cross bars where multiple eagles would routinely perch. In short, it's a very livable, lovely spot and we thoroughly enjoyed ourselves there.
We would heartily recommend Tonja and her home to anyone.
Beautiful house, perfect for the family! Convenient location! Host was very welcoming.
Tonja was very accommodating to our large group of nine traveling to Juneau from all over the country for a family wedding. She graciously rearranged her furniture to make sure we all had a comfortable place to sleep, She also opened up her fully stocked pantry to us and we were able to use her kayaks on a sunny Juneau day. We also took advantage of spacious deck with gas grill to gather and prepare a few dinners. Beautiful views across the channel of downtown Juneau, yet convieniently only a few miles away. Would love to stay there again!

About the Host, Tonja
We live in North Douglas, a short jaunt across the bridge from Juneau, Alaska. I'm a high school English teacher and my husband is a carpenter and we have two active teenage boys and a dog we adopted in Thailand. We love to travel, mountain bike, ski, and play sports. We rent our home out while we are traveling so we often aren't in town when our guests arrive, but we leave detailed descriptions about the house and what to do. We love having people in our home, and love hearing about the stories of joy and laughter shared on our deck in our absence.
