MadMen Basement Lounge & Breakfast!

House - Private room · N Terry St, Portland, OR 97217, United States

The Space

Come spend some time in our groovy Mid-mod-inspired basement suite. You'll have a private bathroom, your own bar and fridge, large kitchen table, and vintage entertainment center- just gotta wait for the vacuum tubes to warm up! You will enjoy your own private entrance and should park on the side street near the back door for easy access.

The rest of the house is craftsman style with lots of green features. Enjoy basking in our sunny backyard under the arbor (soon-to-be) covered in honeysuckle, watch our vegetables and herbs grow, listen to our chickens cluck away, or just enjoy that our 6kW solar system is taking care of all of the electricity. We serve a wide variety of breakfast options at our nearby cafe and bakery, Posies Bakery & Cafe. You're receive $5 credit per person.

We both own businesses and have two young kids, so life is busy. The main house is never perfect, oftentimes bustling with activity before and after work, but your space is calm and your own. Please note that the space is in the basement, so footsteps- especially little ones before 8am- can be heard above. Children are welcome in the space itself, though it is not an ideal for little ones... more man cave, less of a fun play space.

Posies Bakery & Cafe is just a short 4 block walk in Historic Downtown Kenton. Enjoy the local restaurants, bars, library, shops, and services all within walking distance to Historic Kenton.

Major grocery is 3 blocks away and a gourmet one 1 MAX stop away (or 6 blocks). Some feature attractions include a giant Paul Bunyan statue listed on the national historic registry, rose gardens, beautiful Kenton Park or Harper's Playground (an ADA accessible playground) just 7 blocks away.

2 blocks from MAX and 2 different bus lines (#4 and #75). Super easy on/off to I-5 and only 7 minutes to downtown by car. Easy walk to Kenton Park, "hidden" Columbia Slough or Smith and Bybee Lakes. Quick escape with no traffic to the Gorge.

We're Portland travel *experts* and love to share our love for Stumptown, especially the *hidden* stuff. Come and visit our town within a town!

  • Had a great time staying in the MadMen basement! Super cozy and the hosts were very accommodating.

  • Staying here was a highlight of our trip. After a 10+ hour drive, we were met outside and welcomed. It felt like we were family. I think Jonathan and Jessie truly cared about our comfort and enjoyment of the city. Jonathan sat with us and went over maps and excursion possibilities. This was our first experience with airbnb. If airbnb were smart, they would use the MadMen Basement experience as an example for the rest of the program.

  • Sweet, stylish space. Jonathan and Jamie definitely have put lots of artistic energy into making this basement beautiful and very comfortable. They are a sweet family and do a great job hosting. They even brought us some toys for my little one to play with.

  • The vinyl was spinning and the ice was fresh, just as other reviewers noted. Perfect, and we'll be back!

  • Jonathan is wonderful and the space is beautiful! Enjoy!

  • My boyfriend and I stayed here during a spontaneous long weekend in Portland. The room was gorgeous! Absolutely of another era, and our hosts were nice. If you have a car, you're about ten minutes away from downtown, and around 20 by train. This is a basement apartment, and yes, you will hear small children running. A few times, we heard voices very clearly. But the kids go to bed fairly early, and the amazing radio plays great old jazz, which covers most of the noise. The only real concern was that a few bottles went missing from the bar, mysteriously. But would stay again, and really lovely weekend. :)

  • What a great find! Upon arrival there was a lit candle and wonderful jazz music to put us right in another era! This place is awesome. We would recommend it to anyone and stay again in a minute. Jonathan was super flexible and prompt in getting back to us. Make sure to check out the bakery.... Was just another great part of staying at this gem of a place!

  • Jonathan was a great host! This Lounge is really clean and neat. There are darts to play if you get bored! Jonathan really looked out for our best interest. We chose Jonathan's place because it was near the Moda Center for a TrailBlazers game and he recommended the Max light rail and gave us times that we can take it. Jonathan and Jessie's Bakery "Posies" is super good as well!! The $5 dollar credit per person was plenty for a good breakfast. We got the Bacon, Egg, and Cheese Biscuit Sandwich and it was delicious!! The whole vibe of the Basement Lounge was excellent. We felt like we were in MadMen! There was really cool artwork there and Jazz playing on a 50 year old stereo too! If you want to see some of our experience there you can check out my Instagram account robert_valdez08 for some videos I took. The Bed was comfy and clean, and everything smelled great. Their Kids are adorable. When we checked out, they were outside helping dad wash the car and it was the cutest thing. We will definitely be staying there in the future!!

  • This basement quickly became a favorite during our vacation. Both Jonathan and Jessie were excellent hosts providing us with credit at their coffee shop (delicious!) and prompt communication throughout our stay. There's something special about dealing with REAL people rather than a hotel clerk who hates his job and sounds like a robot (no offense to anyone who falls under that category). The room was warm and the shower pressure was excellent. One thing though, it got a little noisy at times. I think because it's a basement, it's not really sound proof so we could hear footsteps and random thumps every now and then. Overall very happy and would book again!

  • Great overall stay in the Mad Men basement spot! We love the coziness and the vintage feel of the place and with the free breakfast ( just about) from the hosts cafe down the street, it's a wonderful time. Definitely going to stay there again next time in PDX!

Outgoing family excited to share our home with others. We love cooking and enjoying great food (meat-a-terians). We love to travel, which Jessie, because of her former life as a fencing champion, has seen the world (or the gyms of the world, at least), including Cuba, Israel, Venezuela, South Africa, all of Europe and more..... We love kids and have two of our own, a 5-year old girl and 1 year old boy. We're both business people and love to learn and challenge ourselves.
