This is a beautifully furnished one bedroom suite, with a nicely equipped kitchenette, full refrigerator, washing machine, tiled shower, and a lovely, romantic sunken bedroom with queen size bed. The Suite is approximately 800 square feet, with additional covered space on the lanai.
The Suite is one-half of the Ohana (second home) on my property, located approximately 10 miles south of Hilo. It is very private from both the main home and the adjacent portion of the ohana, and surrounded by tropical greenery. Yet I am always close by for advice on travel ideas, restaurants, shopping, etc.
The location is very easy to get to, and is perfect for traveling and sightseeing the entire Big Island, from viewing the active lava flow near Kalapana, great snorkeling and swimming at Kapoho and the Ahalanui Hot ponds, to Volcano National Park, Hilo and the Hamakua coast.
The Suite would make a lovely honeymoon destination, as well as a romantic weekend getaway. The neighborhood is rural, and the property is located at the end of a small street, so it is always quiet and peaceful.
Great restaurants abound in the small village of Pahoa, in Hilo Town, and in Volcano Village. Farmers' markets are nearby, as well as basic food and sundry shopping in the small town of Kea'au and in the Orchidland neighborhood. The public bus stop is a short walk to Highway 130, and buses run regularly to Hilo, Kona, and other island destinations.
We have a peaceful, secluded spot here and want to make sure it stays this way. So please be courteous and aware of others staying on the property.
Keeping the Suite clean and bug-free is also very important, so please follow my written instructions on how to handle various types of rubbage and recycling.
If you're doing laundry, please use the clothesline on the lanai if the weather permits.
We are nearby for any questions or concerns you have, so please feel free to stop by and chat.
Darya's cottage worked very well for our 4-night stay. Darya showed us everything we needed to know about the place (cooking, laundry, etc) and gave us suggestions for places to sightsee. The location is great for access to everything (it's rural so a car is a necessity).
Once we were settled in, it was very private and we felt totally comfortable.
We'd recommend it.
We loved the "suite" and its setting was perfect. It was nestled in the woods but conveniently located. Darya and her husband were the best hosts. We arrived late and they were so gracious. They had eggs from their very own chickens in the refrig with a few other basics. They also collect their own rain water (very cool) so they provide water that is suitable for drinking in the form of a 5 gallon water cooler.
The kitchen is adequate with an electric stove top and was great for what we wanted - cooking pasta and heating up soup. They compost everything which is so awesome. The kitchen does not have a sink but there's a large sink next to the washer and dryer that is not far to wash all your dishes and pot/pans.
There are three entrances to the cottage. The sliding door has a key and is off the cutest little deck. We enjoyed our tea/coffee out there in the morning and it was simply wonderful. The second door is in the kitchen/dining room and must lead to another "suite". That door was not able to be locked from our side. The third door was from the bedroom and it didn't seem to be able to be locked either. Being two women we just decided to rig the doors so we at least knew if someone came in. Again we felt very safe there and slept well. It's just that we know some friends that would not have felt comfortable with those conditions. The place has so much room and it was a perfect fit for us!
We climbed Mauna Kea while we were there and after reaching the summit it was the best feeling to crawl into the cottage late afternoon and sleep. It was so peaceful and to hear all the wildlife around was truly a great experience.
We would 100% stay here again. It was a perfect location for everything we wanted to do and Darya and her husband were perfect hosts. They were very accommodating. We ended up with a late flight out and they even let us come back at 5:30 pm to shower and pack before our flight. So if you love nature you'll love staying here.
I agree with all of the positive reviews from others. We had a plane delay and arrived late, like midnight and she had left the porch light on, door open and left a flash light on a post in the carport so we could find our way. Location is nice and quiet and easy to find and for us a nice jumping off point to go either north or south. Darya was a great host and left some eggs, muffins and coffee for our first morning. We liked the deck and patio and sat out there a lot. She helped us with some things to do and places to see and even loaned some snorkel gear and a guide book. If were to go back to Hilo I would rent from her again.
The home was as described in the listing. It was very spacious and was midway between Hilo and the Volcano park so it was very convenient to travel to either location. Darya was great host and we had fresh fruits and eggs during our stay there.
We had a lovely time at this rental! Darya was extremely gracious and welcoming. She left us with fresh passion fruits and papaya from her garden, and her hens were working in overdrive so we were even lucky enough to get fresh eggs. The home is very spacious and all the amenities were thought of (everything from washer/dryer to beach towels to a cooler & ice pack for day trips.) Would definitely recommend!
As beautiful as the pictures are on the listing, Darya's listing does not do this accommodation justice. This suite is even more beautiful, more spacious, more comfortable and welcoming than the listing indicates. We contacted Darya late at night, on zero notice, after an unfortunate experience at a hotel we had booked. Darya responded bright and early the next morning and had the place ready for us within just a few hours. Everything was neat and spanking clean. The fridge was stocked with basics for the first day (coffee and tea, bagels, butter, jam, dry pasta, various condiments and sauces, and a big bowl of fresh fruit), and the suite was equipped with fully functional and perfectly adequate appliances including washer and dryer, iron, electric stove, fridge, microwave and a large toaster oven. There was a huge library of reading material including books of all sorts as well as magazines and a tasteful amount of tourist material explaining the island. The wifi works flawlessly (better than at most hotels). The bed is super comfortable, and there are even extra blankets, pillows, and towels, as well as an electric fan.
The atmosphere is every bit as romantic and soothing as described - we could not have imagined a more perfect accommodation.
Positives: The suite is huge! It's half of a house on Darya's property (the other half is rented separately; she also lives in a separate house). There's a kitchen fully stocked with utensils (though with a portable electric stove only), full laundry set (washer/dryer), lots of comfortable chairs, etc.
The location is about 15 minutes south of Hilo, so you can easily access the Keaau farmer's market and get a more local, less touristy experience. It's also closer to Volcano Park and the southern coast beaches.
Negatives: The apartment was damp because it rained a lot while we were there. The lights were dim so it was a bit gloomy at night. To prevent attracting bugs, Darya set up a system of putting food waste in a plastic container and leaving it on the porch for her to dispose of every day, which was a minor inconvenience.
Overall we highly enjoyed the experience and would recommend staying here.

I grew up in California, and came to the Big Island of Hawaii 9 years ago. I love plants and food, children and animals, art and photography. I would love to travel to Europe again, but first I hope to travel to Asia: China, Vietnam, Cambodia, Laos, Malaysia, and to eat my way through every delicious region!
But until then, meeting people from all parts of the world as they travel to our beautiful, welcoming island is just perfect!
