I didn't take much notice of the last (negative) review that Karen's beautiful place got - it was the only one and it seemed like a bit of a weird rant- but all the same, it was good to find that the room (and all the house) was absolutely spotless, as well as beautifully decorated and super comfortable and relaxing...and that Karen was a wonderfully welcoming host, really helpful and great company. She made me feel right at home and gave me loads of local info on how to enjoy Dahab (a lovely, laid back place).
I slept really well- and after breakfast I had to prize myself off the balcony cushions to get out to the beach. The whole house is a peaceful haven, beautifully decorated and super comfortable and relaxing.
Wish I could have stayed longer and definitely hope to return! Thank you so much Karen!
He he, thanks Olivia! Yes it was a strange review from last guest Miguel (see below) who was possibly hoping to be a "bit more than a guest" and angling for free food and extra nights.
His review was completely untrue- far from "not even offering a glass of water" (!) I gave him a welcome pack of food - which he made last for 3 days as he seemed loath to change any money or pay the transfer driver or pay the 2 extra nights he wanted. It's also untrue about the ticks (yuk)- after he left I cleared out the room and found not a single insect.
I was surprised hygiene was an issue for him, as in his 10 day stay he did not take a single shower or go swimming - preferring to stay in his room night and day -and where he had to be repeatedly asked not to smoke.
Never mind, I've had lovely guests over the last 3 years - there is bound to be one "odd ball" - and, as he told me on arrival that he was Edgar Allen Poe's reincarnation, I shouldn't have been surprised to read a piece of fiction.
It would've been nice if the host tells her clients that she has pets. dog and cats. me I love animals. but other people may be allergic to animals or may have an issue. It would also have been nice if she tells people that she lives a few feet from mosque where the loud speaker is heard every few hours. I don't mind it. But other people may just want peace and tranquility. It would've been nice if she had screen on her windows to keep the flies from buzzing in your ears while you are trying to read a book or just relax. Host has a fly sticky roll in her room, but she never bother to put one in her guest room since they paid for the stay. The bed is on the floor which I wouldn't mind if it was a firm bed. but it was lumpy and uncomfortably and you see ticks crawling up on it. (they contain no diseases but still. ) She never once after staying there for 2 weeks and a half, told me around to show me places. I had to discover places for myself. I understand that they can't get mail there but to tell people that are coming who are coming in to pick her up stuff that is pricy that she gives them the money for it and treat to dinner, (which she did at the last minute, but I couldn't cause I was on a budget) I never got offered anything, not even water. Now all that I didn't really mind at all since I am a pretty much a laid back type of guy. And when I needed to check my e-mail, she had me go to internet cafe, instead of quickly letting me use her laptop... Even that I didn't mind BUT what I really thought was unfair and inconsiderate was I booked with her 3 through 14. But I failed to realize that from New york to Egypt would take 2 days, so I paid for two days which I didn't use. that was okay too. I booked to be at another place on the 17. so she charged me for those 2 extra days (15, 16) not the going rate of $11 per night when you book longer BUT $12 per night so I wrought up paying her an extra 270 pounds. (which technically she would've owe me for those two days. Way uncool. I guess you get what you pay for.
Hi everyone, I have just returned from Dahab after staying in Karen's lovely home for 4 weeks, Although Karen was away we kept in touch and if I had any questions Karen was always quick to help. The house is situated in the very heart of the Bedouin area of Asala, and you really get the feel as to how the locals live. There are shops just a few steps away selling everything you need for cooking your meals or a short walk or taxi to the Lighthouse area where there are tourist shops, restaurants and dive centres. I had a lovely relaxing few weeks, Thank you Karen.
Karen's place in Dahab is super comfortable and relaxing, and Karen herself is an amazing person who will do everything she can to make sure you're having a great time while allowing you the space to be highly independent.
I would highly recommend to anybody to stay with her, thanks again, Karen!
Thank you for wonderful time in your house and thank for your kindness.
We were 7 people sharing Karen house and we all had a lovely time. Karen's house is 7 min from the water and 15min from "downtown" dahab:) or something like 5 Ep with taxi.
We spend a lot of time hangout "outside" where you can have a small BBQ, read your book, talk, drink, listen to music etc.
Thank you again Karen for taking care of us!

I absolutely loved Karen' house with the outside seating area. The location in the Bedouin part of Dahab is perfect. With the rental bike everything was well in reach - max 10 minutes. The room was nice, clean and the same goes for the house and garden. Thanks Karen for showing me around, I really really enjoyed my time in Dahab! Thanks!!
My friends and I had a great stay at Karen's apartment! She was very flexible concerning our booking right from the start. The room we rented was large and equiped with a van. She has a beautiful garden with a terrass that you just don't want to leave once you hit one of the pillows. There were a lot of books as well! Her place is large and clean and has a well equiped kitchen. Every piece of furniture has a little story of its own. We felt immediately at home.
Her apartment is located in a very nice area in Dahab, close by grocery stores and a 15 min walk (tops) to the beach. There's an very small, charming restaurant (Baba Ali) just 5 minutes away, where you can get amazing food for little to no money!
Karen herself is a kind and open person. She offered to brings us into contact with local friends of hers who could take us on tours through the desert.
In short, all was great. We would definately recommend this place to everyone going to Dahab and we hope to come back one day!
That's really nice to hear...I'm so glad you had such a good holiday.
I love it when people appreciate my home and feel at home there themselves. It was a total pleasure having you around and you are always welcome back.. Greetings to Rosa and Alisa... groetjes, Karen

About the Host, Karen
I'm an illustrator and artist from London, where my work appeared on bus sides, broadsheets and T.V. Nowadays I live a quiet life in Dahab, where I've been for 7 years. The Bedouin culture of hospitality inspires the friendly atmosphere and I love the clean air, mountains, sea, coral reefs and the slow pace of life.
