The Neighborhood

The area around the Spanish Steps is one of the most busy sections of Rome. In addition to the main attraction - the famous steps extending from Piazza di Spagna to Trinita dei Monti - this area offers designer shops, restaurants and bars.

The square Piazza di Spagna at the base of the steps was originally named after the Spanish Embassy located in the square. The concept for the Spanish Steps originated in the 17th century by the owners of the French church Trinita dei Monti who wanted to connect the church with the square below.

The square at the bottom of the Spanish Steps contains a beautiful fountain in the shape of a small boat, called the Barcaccia. Visitors and locals alike gather around the fountain and you may even have to climb the stairs to view the fountain.

Its name comes from the presence of the “Spanish Embassy by The Holy Church”. The square includes also the famous Spanish Steps. The sumptuous flight of steps (135) was built between 1721 and 1725 for the Jubileum by Pope Benedetto XIII. It was meant to be a connection between the spectacular church of Trinità dei Monti with the embassy.

By that time the Pincio (the church’s hill) was isolated from the rest of the city, that was because of its steepness. Well the Pope’s solution was a perfect and “monumental” baroque solution to the problem. It took 17 years instead to built the church (finished in 1519) and even more to dedicate it from Pope Sisto V in 1585.

In the lower part of the square, just below the steps, there’s a fountain called La Barcaccia (the longboat) started by master Pietro Bernini who died before finishing it, but the job was ended by a young boy who will be soon one of the most important Rome’s artist: his son Gian Lorenzo Bernini.

To make a better and impressive entry in the Square I suggest you to come from Via dei Condotti.
One of the things that made the area famous, is shopping. In the nearby streets, such as Via Condotti, Via del Babuino, Via del Corso, there are the most famous (and expensive!) top brands’ boutiques.

  • The week before our arrival PG has already sent email and SMS to confirm the arrival time and transportation. He is a great host as he is always ready to (website hidden) helped to arrange a taxi to pick us up from the Roma termini station to his apartment, and he was already there waiting for us. The apartment is tastefully decorated and clean, he even left a bottle of red wine for us!
The location of the apartment can't be better, it's just 3 mins to Spanish steps and all the top designer shops, adjacent to Via del Corso which is a main road that leads to many historical attractions. We walked to all the attractions even to Vatican City, even though its about 25 mins to Vatican but its a very pleasant walk.
Once We left the keys in the apartment and locked ourselves outside, so I called him and within 30 mins he was there to open the door for us! He is always very prompt to reply our SMS. My niece flew in from Manchester to join us but her flight was delayed three hours due to bad weather, it was so nice of PG to stay awake so late till 2.15am just to ensure the cab that he arranged was there to pick her up at Fumiciuno airport (originally was Campino airport). We were really touched by his act!
We went to a few restaurants recommended by PG and the food was really good.
The apartment is well stocked with amenities and kitchen utensils. Both bedrooms and bathrooms are very modern designed and comfortable.
On our last day, PG introduced his mother to us and arranged a big Mercedes taxi (7 seater) to send us to the airport. The whole trip at rome was very good and enjoyable for us, due to the location that we stay and a great host that we have. Thanks PG we will definitely come back to stay there again on our next trip to rome.

  • Communications regarding my arrival/departure and requirements while booking and before travelling out was quick and easy.

The centrally located apartment couldn´t be more perfect: rooms nicely decorated, very comfortable and very clean, nothing was missing.
It is very central but not at all noisy, a very quiet place, with shops and supermarkets nearby.

A beautiful apartment with details that keep the floor intact architecture. A great taste and respect for the original architecture. An excellent combination of modernity and tradition. (One detail that is not seen in the photos: the original ceilings of the building...)

I was working 10 days in Rome. The feeling of returning to the apartment every day after work was very comfortable.

The location was perfect for walking to the different areas I wanted to go to and I found the immediate locality to have a number of great places to eat and shop.

The flat is a great size to spread out and feel at home and has a lovely characteristic. Pierluigi was extremely generous with his advice and suggestions of what I could do on my stay.

At the end of the stay, when my wife comes, (on his birthday) Pierluigi has been very kind, helped me with the preparation of a small reception, with the purchase of a beautiful bouquet of flowers and a delicious cake. Fantastic and a lovely way to finish the stay - thanks Pierluigi.

    Highly recommended.

  • fantastic appartment with great location at the heart of historical Roma. Pierluigi was very reliable, on-time for welcoming us and also for check-out, ready to help with good tips. street noise was annoying as early as 7am but this is probably the case with most of city center location.
