The Space

Our Green lodging has been operating since 2000. We provide organic breakfasts, organic cotton sheets, locally made furnishings. Out of respect for people with chemical sensitivities, we use only environmentally friendly cleaning products and encourage a scent-free environment. The South Room is a large room at the back of the house. It has a super comfortable queen size bed and an additional twin-size foam pad in the closet for a child. There's also a massage table stored in that closet, in case that inspires you. It has a carpeted floor, quiet neutral colors. The South Room shares the upstairs bathroom with the North Room. The bathroom has a large claw-foot tub and a hose/nozzle for sit-down showering. Also upstairs is the Library, a lovely common room for all guests to enjoy. It includes a TV, videos and of course, books.

Our hope is that you'll find our home comfortable, relaxing, and inspirational. If you're already familiar with common environmental practices like recycling, composting and eating organic food, you'll feel right at home here. If not, we'd be happy to explain their importance, as well as our use of organic bedding, buying locally, raising chickens, and energy saving practices. We love sharing what we know and learning more from our guests. We serve breakfast on your schedule in any number of locations, indoors or out.

We also have become a Washington State non-profit, Fertile Ground Commons, our demonstration site for sustainable living. As such, you'll find lots of activity around the house with people picking up their CSA shares, carpooling, dropping off home school kids, volunteering in the garden, or having a potluck. It's a fun way to get a taste of Olympia, if you're up for it.

This Oasis in downtown Olympia has a large garden and mature fruit and nut trees along with six chickens and numerous swings and outdoor seating areas. We are super kid-friendly and can provide high chair, stroller, play pen, booster seats and toys! Just bring the kids, the Fertile Grounds will keep them occupied.

Guest Access

Guests have access to The Commons: an outdoor space with gardens, fountain, food court, edible landscaping, swings. Indoors, we have a piano, library, sauna and an open kitchen.

  • I'm from Lacey and was visiting my parents this summer. I wanted to take a little break from my parents with my girlfriend and stay downtown to enjoy the nightlife a little. Gail's place is the perfect location for visiting downtown and she has a few other bnb's that she manages so she knows how to make a guest feel welcome and allow them them the space that they need.

The room is perfect. The bed is unbelievably comfortable for 2 people. There is a community garden the back where we met many friendly people. There's chickens back there and they're fun to look at. The raspberry bushes were a nice snack. I enjoyed going for runs in the morning though the capital.

The house is herb friendly, which was a really nice way to enjoy the environment.

    No complaints, perfect place!

  • This was our second stay at Fertile Ground. It is an excellent location, accessible to downtown. The room itself was very attractive and comfortable. The house provided a nice gathering area for us when we were assembling other family members who were staying other places. The breakfast provided was excellent. Our hostess was very helpful and friendly.

  • I stayed with Gail for a month and it was great. Both Gail and Michael were super nice and (email hidden)e house is in a great location, just a few blocks from downtown Olympia. This is a good choice for a place to stay for a few days when staying in Olympia

  • I had a great time staying at The Annex. Gail keeps the house clean and orderly, and there's a real sense of community right outside the back door. The space out back is shared by the Bed and Breakfast - Fertile Grounds - along with other neighbors who tend a well manicured garden. When you throw in the vendors who serve tamales and Middle Eastern food, it feels like a slice of paradise. It's also a short walk to downtown Olympia, and found that I didn't need a car when dining or exploring the downtown area.

The Annex also includes a hot tub, which Gail was cleaning when I arrived, and fired up shortly afterward. My four day stay was very enjoyable, and I will stay there next time I return to Olympia.

  • If you're going to Olympia, stay with Gail! She is an awesome lady who was happy to tell us about all the neat things Olympia had to offer! We really enjoyed all her hospitality and getting to meet Bindi the cat as well. Gail is wonderful to visit with and made our stay so fun and memorable.

Also of mention is the amazing Common's area at Fertile Grounds. We loved spending some time in their garden and felt so peaceful, even though we were in the city. Gail and her team have done an amazing job (email hidden) space that is open for all to enjoy... a true "commons" area. We loved her vision and are excited for our next visit!

  • Friendly place to stay on a super charming property (gardens and a tamale cart out back, walkable to everything in downtown Oly). I used to live in Olympia and was visiting and really didn't want to stay on a friend's couch or in a hotel, so this was perfect :)
Like Gail says, this is a room in her house so it's close quarters. Nice ones, though!
And the hot tub was wonderful. I'll definitely recommend this to friends.
