Come stay with us…..animal lovers are welcomed! I’m a songwriter who lives in Bethlehem, PA, which is about a half hour from the Martin Guitar Factory in Nazareth, about an hour north of Philadelphia, two hours west of NYC, and within 2 hours of historic Lancaster and York. I’ve lived in Bethlehem for over 26 years and although I’m not a native I consider this home.
The guest room is on the third floor of this single, brick home. It’s most of the third floor so it’s a fairly spacious space, with both a queen sized futon and a single bed. There is also a desk and small end table. It used to be the room for my adolescent children and still bears some of their marks.
We share one bathroom, which is on the second floor and has the basic sink, toilet and shower/tub combination. There are towel racks and hooks for use. The house itself has a living room, dining room, kitchen, 3 other bedrooms, and a small garden area as a back yard. With two dogs and two cats, it can be a pretty lively place, but everyone usually calms down early in the evening.
If you’re seeing the sights of Musikfest or wanting to stroll through the historic district before settling in, dropping off your bags early is not a problem. I’m within walking distance to the downtown historic area, Moravian College, Musikfest and Christkindlemart. I’m within a mile or two of the new Steel Stacks performance venue on the southside of Bethlehem and you can walk to the Delaware/Lehigh canal rail trail from my home. There are very good restaurants within walking distance, and several pubs and bars where the locals gravitate.
Note: I’m an animal lover so upon entry you’ll be greeted by first the two dogs—one a terrier mutt rescue and the other a purebred English Setter. Our rescue mutt is still struggling with anxiety/fear issues and he’ll sound the alarm that will convince you he’s about to do you serious harm, but once you give him a few treats (I keep these by the door), he does settle down. The setter will simply give endless kisses. There are also two cats that do have free reign of the house although all four animals have limited access to the third floor space.
There is a small back yard that is primarily a garden space. Feel free to use the swing or sit on the back or front porch. There are a couple of birdfeeders there that provide endless entertainment as you watch the birds squabble over who gets what seed.
And just a note, this is not a bed and breakfast; this is simply a place where I welcome people to come and stay with me.
You have access to the kitchen, with its equipment, should you want to cook while you are here. There is additionally Wi-Fi and the password will be given to you upon arrival.
Interaction with Guests
How much I see you is pretty much dependent upon your needs....most of my guests tend to check in, ask for recommendations, and then go their way. You'll be given a key to come and go as you please.
My neighborhood is the working class neighborhood that abutted the wealthy section years ago--this is where the "help" would have lived. Because of it's age (1930's) it's got lovely quirks--creaky floors, built in drawers and still an ice box....
It's an easy walk downtown and a grocery store is only blocks away. You might want to drive to the Steel Stacks but even that is a 5 minute drive. Easy access on and off highway 378.
There is no smoking on the premises, including the bedroom. You are more than welcome to use anything in the kitchen if you'd like to cook your own meal. I'm usually an early riser, and I head to bed no later than midnight. That doesn't mean you need to be in at that time; you'll have your own key for use when you come.....and you are free to come in whenever. I'll try to keep the joyous waking up animal noise to a minimum in the morning. I'm fine with limited alcohol consumption but obviously, if you have a problem with alcohol, this is a residential neighborhood and expectations are that you'll be considerate of others.
Please be aware that neither of the 2 cats are permitted outside at all and you'll need to take special precaution of the kitten, who is pushing that boundary considerably. The yard in back is fenced for the dogs but they are not allowed outside of the fenced area. Additionally, our terrier mutt is working on his anxiety issues but as I said, he's a little fearful in the beginning so be a little cautious of him until he gets used to your presence. He may sound the alarm every time you enter but you can give him a treat (they're kept on the fireplace mantel) and he'll love you forever. The English Setter will love you no matter what you do but she's a slobberer, so beware!
This is the second time we've stayed with Bonnie, and will definitely stay again if we need a place near Bethlehem!
Bonnie was great and her house was charming clean and comfortable. She had great communication, made it easy for me to come and go without concern, and went the extra mile to make me feel welcome and at home. Also, her animals are all very sweet. The neighborhood felt safe and the historic downtown of Bethlehem had some nice character. In short, everything was advertised and I would definitely "recommend".
Bonnie was a wonderful host. I arrived much later than I had expected, but she made it smooth and easy. The room was spacious, warm, and comfortable, and Bonnie and pets were very friendly and welcoming. It was a great cozy stay during my travels. I wish I could have stayed longer!
I stayed at Bonnie's for only 1 night and would totally stay with her again. Maximum qualification! She was very informative about what could I do during my short stay. If you like cats and dogs, this is a very good option for you.
Bonnie and her 4 legged friends were very welcoming. I had a great stay and slept very well before my race. Her house is very conveniently located near Lehigh U and the bus station. THANKS!
We had a very comfortable stay at Bonnie's house. She was a gracious host and very accommodating. She is located in close proximity to downtown which made our stay even better.
My stay at Bonnie's was quite pleasant. The walk in attic guest room is well kept, stayed warm once heated and didn't come with any unwanted or unexpected surprises. Access to the bathroom was reasonably close too. The house pets took some time to get used too but I would definitely stay there again if need be.
I’m a songwriter who works full time in the mental health field. I’ve lived in Bethlehem for 26 years and am more than happy to help you find the best restaurants, coffee shops, and bookstores. If you love music, bring your guitar along and we can share some tunes. There are plenty of music/concert venues in the area, from Godfrey Daniels Coffeehouse to the Steel Stacks. We also have several active theatres close by and lots of great lectures at local colleges.
I'm a fairly easygoing person who loves to read, watch the occasional stupid TV show, interspersed with maybe some really good TV (let's talk Homeland), does a lot of songwriting, and longs to travel more than I can afford at the moment...sometimes my work is a little intense but for the most part, I try to keep a balance in my life. Looking forward to meeting you and introducing you to the Lehigh Valley.....
