Frenchmen St. is close to all the action!
New bedroom arrangement: Two full size beds, and one bunk. We are limiting the # of guests to four.
New amenities: Clothes iron, full mirror, luggage rack, more blankets, cheap bicycle rental.
Your future bedroom is in the front of one half of a double shotgun, which is occupied by Madelyn's roommate, Brian & his girlfriend, Shawna. (Madelyn is currently in Puerto Rico).
If you're unfamiliar with shotgun houses, ours is like a duplex - we live in half of the house with a wall separating the two apartments. The front door opens to your room; the next room is a work / storage room with bicycles in it; then a lounge; followed by Brian's bedroom; then the kitchen; then a bathroom, plus washing machine; and finally the backyard.
In other words, to get to the kitchen and bathroom, you will need to walk through our bedrooms. You shouldn't worry about privacy issues though, because we have privacy curtains hung for a makeshift hallway. Also, you won't have to worry about us walking through your room to use the front door, because we will just enter through the back door when you are staying here.
Your room consists of a full size bed with a very comfortable "memory foam topper" & a top single bunk. If you would prefer for the second or third guest (just let us know, & we will make up that bed too). The room has a window air-conditioning unit, as well as a portable, yet powerful fan. For the winter months, there is an electric portable fan heater that keeps the room warm. We have sheets, blankets and pillows provided for you, as well as bath towels.
We will give you a copy of the front door keys - there is one for the front security door and the regular front door knob and deadbolt. We have wifi and all our information in the guest book in the front room. There are board games and playing cards you are free to use.
For breakfast we always have coffee and tea, as well as staples like eggs, bread, cereal, milk and fruit.
Interaction with Guests
Brian & his girlfriend Shawna are living and hosting here. Madelyn lives in Puerto Rico. At least one of us is usually around & we have great recommendations for places to eat, drink, listen to music, places to ride bikes to & current events. Just ask!
Anyway, getting to the fun stuff - our house is only a six block walk or bike ride to all the live music and party action that is Frenchmen Street. These days it is a hub for many locals and tourists alike to enjoy live, local New Orleans music. Clubs on Frenchmen include The Spotted Cat, D.B.A., Snug Harbor, Apple Barrel, Three Muses, The Maison, Blue Nile, Vaso, Dragon's Den and B.M.C. (Balcony Music Club). Besides music clubs, there is a smattering of restaurants, deli counters and folks selling food off their barbeque grills on and around Frenchmen. Plus, there is a new "Night Market" that's open Thursday through Sunday and features local artisans selling their art and other wares. This all makes up the three blocks of the heart of Frenchmen Street, where the party can last all night. And just so you know, Frenchmen Street is only about three blocks from the French Market and connects with the edge of the French Quarter.
Besides Frenchmen, we are also about five blocks from a more up-and-coming live music area in "the new Marigny," which includes music venues Siberia, Hi Ho Lounge, The Allways Lounge and Krazy Kajun Karaoke.
We have bikes with locks that we will rent out to you, so please ask if you are interested. Many places are walking distance as well, including Frenchmen Street bars, the French Market, a new grocery store - Circle Food Store, laundromats & several restaurants & other neighborhood bars & music venues. There are public buses with stops walking distance, but I'll warn you that they are usually not on schedule & can run late. If you have a car there is free street parking on both sides of the street (Frenchmen is a one-way street), and a spot is usually open right in front of the house.
Other Things to Note
As I am sure you have heard, New Orleans can be sketchy in some parts, but we consider our block a safe one. Our location is in the Seventh Ward. If you have heard of Treme, the Marigny and St. Roch, we are flanked by those three neighborhoods. We know the neighbors, and you will usually see them when you are outside our house, because at least one neighbor is usually awake and sitting on their front stoop. We all keep an eye out for one another, because that is the kind of neighborhood we live in. If you are looking for a swanky part of town, with decadent front yards and more white people, you should probably look for a place to stay in the Garden District, Marigny, Bywater or French Quarter. But if you would like a more authentic New Orleans experience where the neighbors are friendly and talk to one another, face to face, where parties and barbeques happen at any given time, where you sometimes hear music out the front door, and overall, you feel a real sense of community, then ours is the place for you.
Please no smoking in the house (you may smoke out front or back), and no drug use. You can come and go at any hours of the day or night, as you have a separate entrance from us. Please feel free to use our umbrellas, and you are welcome to coffee, tea, milk, cereal, eggs and fruit for breakfast.
We had a wonderful time in New Orleans with Brian and Shawna. The place is so well located, you are close to everything. We we're welcomed with open arms and really enjoyed our time with them.
When we come back, we will most certainly stay here again!!
Brian and Shawna were excellent hosts and their place was great.
Far enough from the French Quarter to be an oasis of calm, but close enough to be very convenient for days and nights out (it's about 5 to 10 minutes walk to all the best Frenchmen street music venues) the house was perfect. For those who haven't been to NOLA before, the street also had a great feel of authentic "N'orleans" to it. The room was actually a lot larger than it appeared on the photos, with two double beds and one single top bunk. It was also cool with both an AC unit and a large fan.
Brian and Shawna were very welcoming and accommodating. They were happy for us to come and go as we pleased day or night (we had a our own front door) and were super friendly. They even turned on the side lights and fans in our room before they went to bed, so it was cool and light when we got back from a night out - amazing service!!!
We rented their bikes for a day, which were very cheap, and headed to City Park - a recommended trip.
All in all, we would highly recommend this place to stay!
Our hosts were great! They were around if you needed any help, but weren't too in your business. This may not be for you if you have an issue walking through someone else's space (we didn't) .Our room was never walked through, its very private. Beds are comfy. Lots of space. Its good for the price.
The location is great. A short (6 minute) walk to Frenchmen street which has a bunch of bars, restaurants and live music. This was our favorite part of our visit, so being walking distance made it all the better.
The neighborhood is not the nicest, but its also not terrible. Once you cross St Claude (3 short blocks) you are in a different part of town, the more hipster neighborhood. We would cab it home every night (3 girls), the cabs were cheap (~$10)
I would stay again, the whole experience was great.
We thoroughly enjoyed our experience. Unfortunately, our host Brian had to leave immediately after our arrival. However, his house sitter, Eleanor was absolutely wonderful. The location was excellent since we were able to walk everywhere although the last block or two towards the house didn't feel quite as safe a neighborhood as the streets leading up to it. The house had the perfect funky vibe for our tastes. The only slightly awkward feature was that since the house is shotgun style (long and narrow) and we are a family of four, every time we had to use the bathroom, we had to walk by their bedroom which only had a patterned cloth as a privacy divider. It didn't seem to bother Eleanor at all but I felt a bit self conscious about it. Overall, we had a great vacation.
We had a great time staying with Brian and Shawna! They are both super accommodating and nice. Shawna had some awesome recommendations for things to do too. The house is very comfortable and colorful, and we felt at home in our room. Would definitely stay there again.
We only stayed for a short time but the hosts were very friendly and the accommodation was very well kept. The location was fantastic, especially given the price, just a short walk to the French Quarter.
Brian and Shawna were great host. They were nice enough to take in our luggage a few hours before check in which gave us (my friend and I) the opportunity to explore the French Quarter. The room was clean and they provided us with blankets and towels.
Distance-wise, the location is great because its just a few blocks from the French Quarter.
My favorite part was that they had bikes available. This is a convenient way to get around especially during Mardi Gras.
