Welcome to our place! Our names are Nick and Rachel, and we love living in the Willy Street neighborhood of Madison. Nick is a teacher and Rachel is a PhD student. We love to travel and to share our apartment with travelers! We hope you'll feel at home in our apartment.
You'll have the top level of our two-floor apartment all to yourself. The bed is a hardwood-frame futon with a luxury futon mattress, and all bedding is 300-count, 100% cotton. The room has hardwood floors, a desk, several comfy chairs, and a large armoire with both shelves and hangers.
The apartment has a great kitchen, living room, dining room, and two decks (front and back, so you can decide whether you'd like sun or shade) with a grill that are all open to you. We have one bathroom, but sharing it is never a problem, since Nick leaves for work at the crack of dawn and Rachel has a flexible schedule.
The house is non-smoking, but you are welcome to smoke on the decks or the porch.
We have wifi with a very solid, fast, internet connection.
Our place is located in the Willy Street neighborhood, which is about a 15 minute walk from the center of downtown, and just a bit further to UW-Madison's campus.
The neighborhood is a nice mix of houses and independently-owned shops and restaurants. We're out of the main undergrad area, with mainly grad students and families living around here. Within a few blocks' walk you'll find the amazing organic foods coop, a fair-trade clothing boutique, multiple coffee shops and bars, four local bakeries, a wide range of restaurants (Thai, pizza, Wisconsin pub fare, Costa Rican, Japanese . . . the list goes on), and many local shops. A favorite hang-out down the street was described in a recent New York Times travel review as "friendly . . . in a let’s-dress-hipsterish-and-talk-about-our-kids’- kindergarten-teachers way," and we think this sums up the neighborhood.
Lake Monona is about 4 short blocks away, with a nice swimming beach a few blocks further along the lake. The famous, large, Saturday Farmers' Market occurs up at the Capitol, 1 mile away, but we also have a smaller Tuesday market just a few blocks away.
Our house is 1/2 block away from the bike path that leads straight to campus or on some nice rides around town. We are happy to loan you one of our many bikes, but if they don't fit you, Madison now has a bike-sharing program, B-Cycle, and there's a B-Cycle location just two blocks from our apartment.
If you prefer to take the bus, there are multiple bus lines within a few blocks of the house. We can usually provide you with a bus pass -- just ask.
We are about a 10-minute drive from the airport.
Our house is a 10-minute walk from a 24-hour fitness center. It's simple, with just basic cardio machines and weight machines, but we like it. if you are interested in accessing the gym, we can arrange for a guest pass for you for $20 total (that's the gym's fee, not ours!). Please let us know ahead of time.
There is never a problem finding a free spot on the street within a two-block walk.
**********Food and cooking**********
All food that we serve you is made with ingredients from the farmers' market and/or the co-op, and we happily accommodate vegan, gluten-free, etc.
The rental price listed includes basic breakfast items, such as fair-trade coffee and tea, bagels or bread, butter/vegan butter, jam, peanut butter, cereals and milk/soy milk, yogurt, and fruit. If it's a weekend, we'll probably make a more extensive breakfast that we'd love for you to join (examples: huevos rancheros made with Christenson Farm eggs and Farmer John's cheddar; breakfast quinoa with dates and almonds; 10-grain pancakes with bananas and walnuts)
We cook delicious vegetarian dinners nearly every night. You are welcome to join us!
Please feel free to cook in our kitchen. We make space in the fridge and cabinets for you to keep food in the house, and you are also welcome to help yourself to cooking basics, like oils, vinegars, spices, and baking supplies.
*We ask that you refrain from bringing meat into the house.*
We have two pet rabbits that live in a room by the back of the house. They are friendly, clean, and litter-box trained, and you shouldn't even know they are here unless you want to come visit them. We don't generally accept visitors with pets.
**********Looking for things to do in Madison?**********
We moved to Madison four years ago and we love it here! We have many suggestions of fun things to do and great places to eat in the area. We understand that some guests prefer to explore on their own and others want an insider's perspective, and we are happy to accommodate whatever kind of experience you are looking for.
We often spend our weekends doing things like apple picking at a local orchard, going to one of the many farmers' markets here, cycling through the arboretum, checking out an art show, or just heading to a favorite bar with an amazing beer selection. You are more than welcome to join us for any of these activities, or we can just point you in the right direction to do them on your own.
Rachel and Nick are terrific. Their house is clean, comfortable, and quiet. I visited during a cold snap and was also glad for the hot water (which I didn't get at the Milwaukee Hilton earlier in my trip) and toasty inside temperature. They are both very cordial and helpful.
Rachel and Nick are excellent hosts. They really made me feel at home staying in their guest room. Their house is in a nice neighborhood with easy access to places to eat and shop for grocery. It is walking distance to the Capitol. They kept the house very clean and tidy which is great.
Best of luck to Rachel, Nick and the soon to be new addition to the family.
The reservation was canceled 16 days before arrival. This is an automated posting.
Rachel's place was perfect! We were traveling trough Madison and she was very accommodating and provided an awesome breakfast. Looking forward to returning to Madison when I have more time to experience the town as Rachel's place is in a very convenient location.
Rachel and Nick were so kind, easy-going and friendly. The house was incredibly clean and organized, and the sheets, towels and even the bathmat was so soft!!! The room is upstairs and very private and very cute. They made us delicious oatmeal each morning. This apartment is in a great location, very close to the co-op and other restaurants and bars. There is only one bathroom that you share with the hosts but this was not an issue for us. We felt very comfortable here and would gladly stay again or recommend to anyone visiting Madison. Thank you so much again for a wonderful weekend!
Our stay with Rachel and Nick was really nice and they were friendly hosts. We came in the winter chill, but they provided plenty of things to help keep warm. They made breakfast for us each day.
My stay with Rachel and Nick was perfect. The room and the appartment in general are really clean, warm. They provide a perfect breakfast. If you need some help they are always here for you. They are very interesting, so talk with them is a real pleasure.I recommend this place to stay.
I had a delightful week at Rachel and Nick's place. Their home was lovely as was the room where I stayed. Everything was neat and tidy which is important to me. I particularly enjoyed the warm steel cut oats that were ready for me each of the cold, snowy mornings I stayed with them. I would highly recommend staying here if you want a quiet place in Madison that is in a vibrant neighborhood filled with young folks!
Rachel and Nick are amazingly kind people and their space is clean, modern, and comfortable. Their space is very close to all sorts of great spots.
I had a short, (1 night) but wonderful stay with Rachel and Nick. They were very thoughtful and friendly. I felt right at home and would stay there again when visiting Madison!
