  • Sorry, but we didn't like the stay with John at all. Let me put it this way: if I want to explore nature or sleep in it - I go camping! We had ants, geckos, wild chicken, turkeys running around and a big cockroach - which eventually made us rearrange our last days of what has been until then a perfect holiday on Hawaii and we left for O'ahu earlier than planned (of course adding more costs to our holiday budget). We didn't think that the description matched what we found and would never stay there again. If I pay a lot of money - I expect at least cleaniless and honesty. John should maybe also consider that there might be people allergic against certain animals (his cat was running around freely, too and the plate with the cat's food was just outside our room... So, no wonder why all the insects etc. love staying at the hous)

    Response from John:

We offer great savings and Sarah got a chance to save so much on her stay in Hawaii as our prices where a third to half of what others where charging during her stay. We really stife to offer a great value with amenities, and extras. We feel that the value we offer is additional safety to our guests- not being forced to be exposed to very toxic sprays and also exposure to more wild life. Hawaii holds special challenges beyond our control, and Sarah appears to have let 1 bug in on her own. I am sorry too that Sarah did not give corrective actions a chance/ extra complimentary room cleaning and wild life abatement. In the Future, It is always best to report your aversions/ special needs/alergies before checking in so that hosts can be more vigilant on your behalf. Also in tropical areas you do have to be more careful to not let creatures into your unit by being more watchful when you open/close/ or leave doors open. It is important when you have aversions to wild life to let your host know in advance so they can take steps to guide you on how to avoid inviting wild life into your living area. Also be careful as many tropical destinations during the rainy season or just regular rain storms the wild life will look for shelter. I had a wolby in Kona try to get into my previous place, at 4 foot high it was an experience. A friend had a wild pig move into his place. If you have things that scare you, it is better to ask people that serve you to help. Also as far as cleaning we used cleaners and cleaning procedures that are standard in the industry- wipe walls, floor down, tiolets, shower- a higher standard that most peoples places. As far as Honesty goes some people want the toxic exposure/ wild life free place, the full service hotel then why do they book at a rustic older Hawaiian Home in Hawaii, did they want the hawaiiana expereince, the great view we have, good location, the superior amenities or was it just they could save 30%-300% on the price in the very pricy peak season. Perhaps a condo complex or full service hotel might have been a better fit. We have turned 3 people away this year after hearing their needs we recommend several full service hotels over us. For others we offer a chance to see a Hawaii that they could only dream of, life expereinces that they may never have , exotic tropical fruits and wild life, hmmm , choose for your self .

  • This place is awesome! Much better than the photo's show. Great space with everything you need. There is a different bed then the photo. A very comfortable queen size bed, there is a couch and a dresser with a bunch of kitchen things. You share a porch area but your space is your own.

This is a great place for people traveling around, not for the people that like everything the same and in place. It is an eccentric place with an eccentric welcoming host.

    Would go back again.

  • great location, great host, worth every penny. My bf and I enjoy every morning when we woke up and have a breakfast on the deck with a beautiful ocean view in front of us. But it is a quite neighborhood, you'd better keep your voice low when 9pm comes.

  • Its a good location (if you have a car) with some nice views from the balcony and your own space. John is a super friendly and helpful host that tries to ensure that you have everything you need. The actual room and bathroom were both clean.

On the negative side, we were a bit disappointed that the sleeper couch had not been prepared when we arrived (late at night) and whilst the bedding was clean, it looked old and used. We also found that the general state of the kitchenware and fridge (outside where the breakfast is kept) was unhygienic and dirty to the point that we chose to eat out for every meal.

  • We've recently returned back from a long island hopping tour and had spent five days here. We too had a mixed experience. John himself was a really nice guy, though we have looked at the recent reviews and agree that the photo's don't reflect the condition it is currently in. Though overall our room was ok (there were a few things that needed fixing like broken towel rail and broken window shutters...), there was a lot of clutter on the main porch and outside and it needed a good deal of cleaning. I must admit that I thought I'd arrived at the wrong place when we got there as we had in mind the pictures that are presented on the site. In essence, this place has great potential but it does need a lot of love, care and maintenance to bring it to speed with what the photos suggest it is. I don't like giving bad reviews but we felt we had to add this to be fair to others who might visit and have the same experience.

    Response from John:

Thanks for staying with us David, the dance lessons where great. I was bumed that we could not have shared more time together. We have given it some love and care since you have visited and have/ are having a number female critics to help give us some insights into how to build the tlc that the place needs. Wow... new mini carpets, paintings, by clutter, more drapes, let go of our messy caretaker too. I remember when i first came to the dry side of the island i felt short changed , landing on the moon , and all, but after i got used to the dryness i realized how nice the beaches where on this side over the other areas of the island. It would be nice if it did rain over here more, ek..We are trying to put out the place as a LOCALHAWAIIAN HOME for more of an island expereince than plastic vantastic, hopefully this will help people to have a more clear vision of what we are trying to offer. You should see the flip flop looking carpet we added t the inside of the rooms and the tropical floor mat for the entrance , more TLC ON THE WAY

  • It was a mixed experience - John is a fantastic host, very generous and helpful, however the property was not as presented in the photos. The room was clean and well kept but the outside kitchen and eating area was messy and dirty. The fridge was full of old, rotten and mouldy food, the dinning table was covered with junk, and the property was littered with all manner of old and broken objects and very neglected. My most serious concerns are that the property presented in the photos is not what is offered.

    Response from John:

we are always trying to improve things, maybe private frigs are the way to go. It is always a good idea to let a host know while you are staying at a place , the fruit we have removed with the table from the photos as people had a perception of it as a curtain way , and the carpet too. The outside can get dirty fast as it is the outside. One day the volcano dropped a layer of dust in an hour or two. Being the dry side in a drought the surrounding plants have taken a hit even though we water- cars can lose their paint in less than 4 years here from the elements. Mulching, permaculture, sustainability , working gardens, are not as nice looking as the pioson gardens that yeild nothing, also invasive species make it difficult on the garden too. With all that said we also needed to tidy up things here and we have

  • We stayed at Johns place with or 11 month baby for about 2 weeks and we enjoyed it very much. The best was the view from the deck to the ocean. The room and the bath are very spaceious. John is very friendly andwas open for all whishes we had.

    November 2012
  • We stayed 2 nights with John in October 2012. He was extremely hospitable, friendly, and knowledgeable of the area. The Dolphin View room was nothing fancy, but clean and spacious. The view of the ocean sunset from the front porch is incredible. The cooking facilities on the porch are a little cramped but there is everything you need. Since they are outside, people with serious bug or lizard issues should not stay here. Also, if you want a lot of privacy this may not be the right place, since the rooms do share walls with John's personal space, and noise will carry through open windows. However, this wasn't a problem for us, and the experience of staying in the jungle canopy, eating fruit from the trees, was way better than any condo. My only suggestion might be to have some collapsible tables, like for tv dinners, so that there is a place to eat on the porch. Mahalo, John! Hope to see you again.

About
I am a bit of an eclectic person, I like to do cultural travel, grow tropical exotic fruit, definately into the whole health and wellness thing. I've found that I really enjoy the hosting aspect of having people come into my home and us get to know each other over the course of their stay. Maybe it's the massage therapist in me but I really enjoy the satisfaction that comes with providing a good experience for my guests, be it good advice on what to see and do, brewing fresh coffee in the morning, or having everything clean, ready, and in order when guests arrive. Having traveled a lot myself (staying in everything from hostels and guesthouses to five-star hotels), I know only too well what kinds of things are important to me in a homestay -- conveint location, clean linens, a comfy bed, helpful people that turn me onto the to do's of the place and a hot shower after a long day of traveling or sightseeing. Oh, and a friendly host, of course.. I really, really enjoy living on the Big Island of Hawaii and know it pretty well. I'm amazed every day that a place as special as this exists and that I get to call it home and I'm thrilled when I get to share it with others. Hope to see you soon!
