Birchgrove/Balmain is an upscale Sydney suburb set on a peninsula jutting out into Sydney harbour. Balmain’s shopping centre has a unique village feel with lots of parks, cafes, restaurants, pubs, fashion-shops and supermarkets. The main shopping strip is a 15-minute walk or 2 minutes by car.
TRANSPORT AND TOURING
The apartment is right at the ferry wharf and this makes it a great base for exploring Sydney. Buses to the city run from Grove Street Birchgrove (5 min walk) or Darling Street Balmain (15 min walk).
Dawn Fraser Swimming Pool is a very popular harbour pool (20 min walk) and well worth a visit. Cockatoo Island, which is an increasingly popular Arts hub, can be seen from the apartment and is accessible by ferry.
The apartment has been popular for longer working holiday stays. It is a very quiet building, plenty of room to spread out, with high-speed Internet and is only a short-distance from the city. The airport is a 20-30 minute drive away.
We accept bookings for a minimum of 7 nights. For long bookings (2 months or more) we may be prepared to negotiate more attractive rates.
We are particularly keen to ensure guests do not disturb other residents and we seek assurances that there will not be noisy gatherings or loud music.
We expect potential guests to send us brief personal profile information - number of people in your group, approximate ages, type of work you do, where you normally live, why you are visiting Sydney, etc.
This is a small block with mostly long-term residents. Your courteous respect for their privacy and amenity is expected.
Gary Reid was an excellent host, available when needed yet trusting of us as tenants. The unit had a book of detailed instructions, brochures of the area, including transportation information, that were very helpful.
Really enjoyed our stay at Gary's apartment in Birchgrove. The harbour views are just stunning and we sat there for hours staring at the various boats going past. You also have access to a rooftop area that gives you even better views.
The unit is older, but very functional. Full Foxtel and good speed WiFi.
Gary left all the instructions we needed to settle in and enjoy the apartment.
It is on the top floor, so you will have to carry your bags up two flights of stairs. Parking can be a challenge, but in a week, we only had one occasion where we could not park within 50 metres of the apartment.
Would thoroughly recommend the unit to others and would stay again if available.
Good host, great location.
Whether exploring Sydney by ferry, discovering the architecture of Balmain or just watching the harbour activities Gary and Cathy’s apartment delivered what it promised.
Before and during our stay Gary was in communication to help if required.
Thanks for an enjoyable holiday.
Apartment met all our expectations. Spacious, fabulous location to ferry and bus, and spectacular views of the harbour.
Host Gary phoned to make sure all was well.
Highly recommend this accommodation for longish stays in particular.
Thank you Gary

Apartment was just as unbelievably good as the description and photos online. Gary's information was excellent and as soon as I texted him to let him know we'd arrived, he phoned and gave us some more, plus suggesting we bought a weekly bus, train and ferry ticket. We paid $63 dollars and after running up $160 worth of trips, we stopped counting! Well worth the money ... also saved time queuing to buy tickets. Ferry terminal is a few minutes walk (you can see it from the window) and the ferries get you all round Sydney. Hard to believe, but we got quite blasé about seeing the Opera House and the Harbour Bridge! Visible from the lounge, dining room, kitchen and bathroom. Highly recommended.
We had a fabulous time here and couldn't have hoped for a better place in Sydney. We really enjoyed our daily ferry trips up down the harbour. The views from the apartment are superb! The local shops in Balmain are very easy to reach by boat and we found a great place to have a flat white coffee after our morning trip to buy fresh croissant from the local baker. Gary was a great host with helpful suggestions about transport. Thanks!
We really enjoyed our stay at Gary and Cathy's apartment. It was incredibly clean and well-presented, and contained thoughtful extras, such as maps and ferry timetables, to make planning our week in Sydney a lot easier. The views from every room in the apartment are magnificent - waking up to the beauty of the Harbour each morning made for a very memorable week! And watching fireworks over the Sydney Harbour Bridge from the apartment's roof-top was an unbeatable experience, too. Our two boys, aged 1 and 5, were very excited to be able to watch the boats and ferries cruise past each day. The apartment's proximity to the Birchgrove ferry wharf - literally at the base of the building - is very convenient for travelling to and from Circular Quay (the ferry trip takes less than 15 minutes). We corresponded with Gary before and during our stay, and he was always friendly, helpful and quick to reply. Thankyou Gary and Cathy for wonderful accommodation - we wouldn't hesitate to recommend your apartment to family and friends (in fact we did just that to our taxi driver on the way to Sydney Airport!)
