The Space

Fully-equipped 2 bedroom, 1-bathroom apartment in a 3-floor waterfront building of 7 apartments in beautiful Birchgrove on the Balmain peninsula. The apartment is on the top floor with access to a large rooftop deck which gives a 360 degree panorama of Sydney harbour and surrounds. A lovely path and stairs lead down to a private waterfront garden.

The kitchen includes stove/oven, fridge, microwave, kettle, cutlery, toaster, crockery and all the basics for self-catering. There is no dishwasher (yet!).

There is a Weber charcoal BBQ on the waterfront at the bottom of the garden. Charcoal is not supplied and can be easily obtained from the supermarket.

Bedroom-1 contains a queen-size bed and Bedroom-2 has 2 single beds that can also be reconfigured into a king-size bed.

All bed-linen is provided and plenty spare towels, sheets, blankets, quilts, pillows. Ample wardrobe, hanging space and drawers.

The living room has a leather lounge plus 2 armchairs, TV, DVD, IPod dock, Pay-TV, telephone, inkjet printer, wired and WiFi internet. Internet and local telephone calls are included free of charge.

A dining nook leads off from the living room and has a travertine dining table and 6 chairs.

Contains a bath (with shower), vanity,hair-dryer, toilet and a washer/dryer.

There is no air-conditioning although the bedrooms have ceiling fans which are very effective in hotter weather (January/February). Electric space heaters are supplied for the winter months.

All rooms have great views and plenty of natural light and ventilation.

Street parking is available and a visitor parking permit is provided that allows unlimited parking in what are otherwise 2-hour zones. Parking can be tight but it would be unusual to have to park more than 50 metres away.

Birchgrove/Balmain is an upscale Sydney suburb set on a peninsula jutting out into Sydney harbour. Balmain’s shopping centre has a unique village feel with lots of parks, cafes, restaurants, pubs, fashion-shops and supermarkets. The main shopping strip is a 15-minute walk or 2 minutes by car.

The apartment is right at the ferry wharf and this makes it a great base for exploring Sydney. Buses to the city run from Grove Street Birchgrove (5 min walk) or Darling Street Balmain (15 min walk).

Dawn Fraser Swimming Pool is a very popular harbour pool (20 min walk) and well worth a visit. Cockatoo Island, which is an increasingly popular Arts hub, can be seen from the apartment and is accessible by ferry.

The apartment has been popular for longer working holiday stays. It is a very quiet building, plenty of room to spread out, with high-speed Internet and is only a short-distance from the city. The airport is a 20-30 minute drive away.

We accept bookings for a minimum of 7 nights. For long bookings (2 months or more) we may be prepared to negotiate more attractive rates.

  • The Birchgrove apartment was absolutely beautiful and just as we expected. A great size for a family of 4 with the kids having a room of their own. Kitchen was well laid out and ideal with preparing family meals. The views were amazing - something is great when you can do the dishes and see the Sydney Harbour Bridge. Gary was a great host and everything that we wanted to was at hand. We can't wait to visit Sydney again.

  • The Harbourside apartment in Sydney was everything it promised to be and more! The location was incredible, with easy access to the ferry just outside the door, the neighborhood was quaint and very cool within walking distance to the condo. Every morning we woke to a new view in the harbor whether it were ferries moving up into the River or leisure craft on the water, views of the Bridge and a clear view of North Sydney were spectacular. The condo was very well appointed with every creature comfort you could desire!

  • Experience with host excellent, clear instructions for accessing apartment and advice re parking etc. First time using Airbnb and will use again, all worked so well, The apartment and area even better than we thought via the internet. It was perfect for the three of us to spend a week catching up with friends in Sydney, travelling by ferry (right by the apartment) or driving. We checked out the bus stop and this would be fine too, into the city or home. The apartment has many inclusions which make it feel like it is a home away from home. Lots of plates, glasses etc., prints on the walls, boxes of tissues, a very welcoming place to stay. And the neighbourhood so handy to the city and the views from all the windows, especially with Vivid Sydney on at the moment, spectacular. So thank you Airbnb and our host Gary Reid. We'll plan another stay one day.

  • Stayed for 11 nights in March/April.
Excellent apartment , spectacular views and fantastic location.
Free WiFi too which was brilliant.

Gary was great to deal with. I didnt meet him personally but had to call him twice. Once to find out Wifi password and once to find out how to work oven on Cooker. In both instances got the required information straight away.

Nice deep carpet, with obvious exception of kitchen and bathroom. Art work on walls and a ceeling that seemed to be about 12 foot high, throughout .
Fully equipped(no dishwasher), with plenty of cutlery and crockery. And Views of harbour bridge
2 plenty big with lots of wardrobe space. And views of river/harbour.
Washer/dryer, and combined bath/shower. no views (ha ha ha)
    Dining area
Table and chairs(six) . And views of river/harbour.
    Main living area
Television with cable channels , Comfortable leather chairs for 4 with Coffee tables side boards.Views of river/harbour including bridge. Pictures on web site really do not do this room/the views justice.
Accessable via outside stairs from kitchen.
large area to see panoramic vista of Sydney harbour. Ablolurley spectacular.
Only went her once , but allows a good ground level view of the harbout with a nice grass area to relax in.
Only potential downside would be for those with difficulty climbing stairs. The apartment is on 3rd Floor(in American terms) with no lifts.

50 Meters from Ferry stop. ferry takes 15 minutes to Circular Quay. There ferrrys go aprox every 30 mins in peek times and 1once per hour off peek. Time tables in apartment.
Bus stop 10-15 minute stroll away, Busses aprox every 20 minutes to city. The bus takes 15 minutes and drops in city centre.
Balmain is 15-20 minute walk away and has some lovely restaurants/Cafe's. Has a sort of a nice town atmosphere. Wouldn't believe only 10 minutes on bus from City.

Would Highly, Highly reccomend this apartment. If we get back to Sydney will definitely try to stay here again.

  • Gary's apartment provides an excellent base for a week's stay, close to the centre yet away from the city centre noise and rush. Easy to reach by ferry from Circular Quay, with fascinating views in three directions of the bustling boating activity in the harbour.
    Highly recommended.

  • Two couples had a wonderful holiday in the apartment which is indeed harbourside. The feelng of being right on the harbour, the views and the proximity to the Birchgrove ferry were our highlights. We were very grateful for Gary and Cathy's very kind assistance when I 'lost' my handbag.
