ITAEWON : The Global Community in Seoul: Global Fashions and Foods
Itaewon is a unique place in Seoul where one can meet people of diverse nationalities and cultures. There is a popular joke saying that international residents may not know Seoul, but they know Itaewon. Seoul even designated Itaewon as its first ‘Special Tourism District,’ to highlight it as a destination for internationals to enjoy a diversity of culture, shopping, and entertainment experiences.
Itaewon is in the middle of Yongsan-gu, which borders the northern part of the Hangang River. It is also close to Seoul Station, Myeong-dong, and Namsan Mountain. The formation of this exotic and global tourism site is closely associated with modern Korean history.
In the aftermath of the Korean War, American soldiers began to stay in the Yongsan Garrison and, consequently, numerous businesses and housing complexes were formed in Yongsan. In preparation for international meetings, the Seoul Asian and Olympic Games, the government strengthened tourism infrastructures and revitalized commerce, prompting international tourists from other parts of the world (such as Japan, Southeast Asia, Africa, the Middle East, etc.) to visit Itaewon.
Itaewon typically refers to the street full of stores, restaurants, and stalls over 1.4 kilometers between Itaewon 1-dong and Hannam 2-dong in the east. Fashion shops specialize in various imported clothes, leather goods, fur goods, handbags, shoes, and antique furniture. Big and tall sizes unavailable in other areas are well-stocked, and experienced tailors offer customized clothes.
Another one of Itaewon’s many draws is its diverse food culture, which features cuisine from around world. Restaurants right behind Hamilton Hotel form a type of exhibition hall for international foods from Korea, New York, London, India, Thailand, China, Greece, Pakistan, Italy, France, Mexico, Australia, and more. Unique flavors, exotic interiors, and diverse nationalities help to make Itaewon befittingly ‘the global village in Seoul.’

Mark was very easy to work with and was quick to answer any and all questions we had. The apartment was just as described and suited us perfectly during our stay. The short 7-10 minute walk to Itaewon station wasn't a big deal at all, and our overall experience was very pleasant.
Mark had been a great host throughout our entire trip. He would check up upon us during our stay in this apartment. The only problem we encountered was when we arrived at the location and were locked outside for roughly half an hour, requiring the assistance of a lady in a nearby real estate shop to assist us in unlocking the keypad. Overall, the apartment was situated in the best possible location for us. It was clean, tidy and utilities provided were sufficient. I would love to stay in one of Mark's apartment when I do return. Thank you for hosting us, it was a great pleasure staying in Seoul!
I didnt have a ton of interaction with Mark, but thats because he gives all the necessary information as soon as you book your stay. The apartment is very clean and comfortable. It is in a GREAT location for people of all ages. I would definitely stay here again! Thanks Mark!
The location for this place was fantastic! It was around ten minutes (or maybe five if you're a speedy walker) from the metro and near a lot of shops/cafes/etc. but far enough up the street that it was relatively quiet. Be warned if you have heavy luggage that the place doesn't have a lift so you will need to carry it all. The stairs are manageable though because they weren't too long. I didn't meet Mark but he was generally responsive and helpful to the queries we had. The wifi for the place was very fast and amazingly connected at other places outside the apartment. The apartment had your basic amenities (but bring a toothbrush and tooth paste) and was comfortable for two people. The only real complaint I have is the smell of mildew in the bathroom. You couldn't smell it in the apartment if you closed the bathroom door though. Overall, I would recommend this apartment if you're looking for a place with a prime location and convenience.
The apartment was decent, we stayed there over the christmas break December 24th-Dec 30th. As it was very cold in korea almost near freezing, it was nice to have heated apartment. Everything was good, it was definitely close to Itaewon Station and all the happenings but not close so you can hear all the noises from the streets. It was convenient as there is a 24 hours convenient store right across.
HOWEVER, we were very disappointed with the water system. There was NO hot water for us to take a shower in the cold weather. We were freezing. Mark (the host) was very reachable and was very helpful he did try to solve the problem and got his maintenance guy and property manager to come in to fix it. But it was not fixable, Mark was nice enough and told my friend and i to go to the public bathroom in Hamilton Hotel and that he'll reimburse us with the money. He did keep his word and try to solve the issue for us, but at the end of the day… we didn't get the hot water running. So we left 2 days earlier than expected, to switch to another place because we had to boil our own water just to wash our hair or take a quick shower.
I hope Mark can solve the problem, he did pay us back the 2 nights that we didn't stay for as it was the apartment's issue. Otherwise, it is a good convenient comfy place, the only downpour is hot water…. :(
Great location and room are in good condition.. As usual Mark is always helpful :) highly recommend..
Room clean but a bit noisy because of the street right next to the window.
The flat is conveniently located, less than 10mn from Itaewon station and there s a convenience store (C&U) in front of the building entrance.
Mark was out of town during our stay, however he was still reachable. The map for directions he send us was well detailed and there was no major problems finding the place. We are globally satisfied.
The flat that Mark provided us is probably one of the best places in Seoul. Very easy to find, less than 5 minutes walk to the subway station (which by the way is also very central located). The flat was very clean and it really felt like home. Itaewon is also very popular for night life: When you go outside you will see a lot of people from many other nations, a lot of different restaurants, a lot of markets, souvenir shops..So the flat has a great location! We would also like to thank Mark for his kindness and help. He was always there whenever we needed him. A perfect host, in a perfect country! I will definitely come again.
Easy to Find!!
