About this listing
This is a great for backpackers, workers, families and students who want private lockable rooms in the Inner West with free use of multiple kitchens and bathrooms and who understand that the rundown nature of the guesthouse means cheap rooms!
****Please read the description below and contact me before booking so I can confirm prices and dates. ****
Room 3 is one of the rooms suited best to longer term guests or students – new carpet tiles, a single bed, full size fridge, huge wardrobe, fan and large study desk. Suitable for one guest in a single bed.
The guesthouse is above a shop in the warehouse/industrial area close to Sydney Airport and it is on the corner of some very busy streets. If you find noise in the house is an issue you can ask for free earplugs but most people get used to it very quickly. There is street parking behind the building.
Rooms do not have TVs and there is no common lounge or dining area. We do provide free fast wifi Internet across the house. We are best suited to be either a “crash pad” for travellers who are out most of the day and don't need common areas or for students who will be spending a lot of time in their rooms studying or working.
It's is also only 5kms from University of Sydney and UTS. It's 8kms from University of New South Wales and buses to both places take less than half an hour.
You are less than five minutes walk to a small shop, a Hungry Jacks(Burger King), a KFC and a McDonalds. Opposite the house is a pub with restaurant, events, music and cheap drinks.
Fifteen minutes walk takes to you a beautiful big parkland area with a cafe, or to the local shopping centre of Marrickville with the nearest big supermarket.
This is a great opportunity for backpackers, workers, families and students who want private lockable rooms in the Inner West with free use of multiple kitchens and bathrooms and who understand that the rundown nature of the guesthouse means cheap rooms!
There are 10 bedrooms in total, two kitchens, three bathrooms and some rooms have their own showers. The smallest rooms can sleep two and the largest rooms can take six in dorm style, or a small family. There is a coin operated washing machine and dryer on site. There may be up to 20 people in the guesthouse sharing all facilities and everybody is expected to help keep kitchens and bathrooms clean.
Interaction with Guests
There is no reception desk so this guesthouse is suitable for independent travellers who do not need much assistance.
I do not live in the guesthouse but can be contacted if there are problems. I provide a professional cleaning company once a week to clean common areas, along with all bills paid, all kitchen and bathroom supplies including free linen. Think of it like a giant share house but with less hassle and a few more perks.
Although the actual block the guesthouse is on is very ugly and so is the immediate area, it is a fantastic location if you are adventurous and prepared to walk a bit, or use public transport. It's less than 5kms from the airport - a taxi is very cheap to the house.
Thirty minutes walk or a short bus ride takes you to some very cool shops and bars in Marrickville(Marrickville Rd) or Newtown(King St).
We are fifteen minutes walk from St Peters or Sydenham train stations (1.5kms) but the buses are directly outside the door so you should experiment to see what you prefer – you can buy a weekly ticket that works on buses and trains. It's about 6kms to Central Station in the city. We are also only about 4kms from RPA Hospital.
It would take you 20 minutes to drive to the beaches or an hour by public transport. And if that's not enough you can take a 20 min walk (2 minute bus) trip to the biggest IKEA in the Southern Hemisphere just down the road from us.
Other Things to Note
To show that you have read and understood my description please include the magic word "Unicorn" in your email to me when enquiring.
PLEASE NOTE: We try our best to give you the room you booked but due to the unpredictable nature of juggling multiple guests who extend alongside upcoming new bookings you may be given a different room in the same guesthouse. If this would cause issues for you please consider other AirBnB properties. In trying to be fair we do not ask existing guests who love us to move out of rooms for new guests if a similar room in the house is instead empty
"Photos on the site may differ slightly from the actual room as we replace furniture and bedding as needed and have fun rearranging at times."
This is by no means a party place – if you would like a more social atmosphere with common areas and a backyard look at my other listings for Scruffy Old Campsie Guesthouse.
We are a strictly NON-SMOKING guesthouse. The nearest area to smoke is out on the street or laneway.
No extra guests without permission, no drugs and no drunken behaviour.
From Dec 21, 2015 - Jan 03, 2016 the minimum stay is 5 nights.
I found Jody to be very accommodating when I had to extend my stay by a couple of nights. It was done with ease and without a problem. The area itself is advertised in the listing and it is in the more industrial part of Newtown/St. Peters. The room description is accurate, but I did find a cockroach in my fridge and had to kill the occasional bug on my floor. Just don't keep open food in your room and make sure you bring a pair a thongs for the shower. Other than that, it's easy to get to and the Southern Cross Hotel across the street has some pretty decent food.
The neighborhood was a little difficult to find, (not because of the host's written directions.... it's just a busy street to navigate in general), but after finding it, everything else was the same as the description.
Overall a great stay! What stood out me was how fast and easy it is to get within the center of Sydney at pretty much any time within less than 20 minutes and just one bus ride. The fridge is huge so you can buy a lot of food :D
The place is much better than "rundown", well worth the price. I had an amazing room, well equipped with kitchen appliances table, couch and fridge. The house itself was quiet, but it is located at a very noisy crossing - therefore, earplugs were provided. Other guests were friendly and quiet. The mattresses were too soft for me and besides a few eating places there are no shops close by. There is a bus stop almost in front of the house and the train station is 15 min. walk - easy to get to the city and other places. Overall a good experience - I would definitely stay there again.
Thanks for all the arrangements what Jody had made for us and for solving our last night so we could get to sleep in a save place instead of walking on the street. Kitchenware, shower, beds, (email hidden)c. are all good. Traffic is convenient. Just hope we didn't keep Jody too busy at the Christmas holidays.
My stay at this guesthouse was wonderfully more than I expected- I knew that Jody was just starting to fix the building but her provision of the furnitures I needed was sufficient enough for me to have a good night sleep and to have my things secured in my room during the day..
The host has been very accomodating and helpful inspite of her busyness, but she still had the time to response 100% whenever I needed assistance- that's very important to me! Am pretty sure that this apartment would be very well in good shape when I come back to Sydney next year. I'm highly recommending this place to my friends and to everyone - very affordable rate, clean room and bathrooms, provided with kitchen ( I want to experience cooking there when I come back tho'). Thanks so much, Jody! Having a great host and a friend like you has blest me so much!

About the Host, Jody
I'm a 37 year old solo mama of one boy, Elliott, who is five years old. I was looking for some way to stay home and raise my son without working long hours so I started renting out rooms in my personal house. That grew so busy I found an old guesthouse, and then another one, and now it's a business!
I live at The Rex with my son and our dogs currently. We also have a house manager couple, Helen and Megan who manage the Sydney business.
We're a friendly bunch and happy to help you get settled in Sydney or Tamworth and give you some local knowledge. If we are busy then we have instructions on how to check yourself in without our help and we will try and say hi during your first few days!
We love independent travellers, students and families who aren't looking for "the party scene" but want more a friendly, home like vibe. We're very LGBT friendly, love people from all backgrounds and children of all ages. The guesthouses are older style, very basic and clean with a bit of character. Most importantly the guesthouses are safe and in local areas!
