Old World Charm
The Virginian Apartments was once an elegant Victorian hotel dating back to 1918 where early Seattle pioneers stayed. Very little has changed in the building. The original granite entry between the school house lamps now has a gold leaf silhouette of Benjamin Franklin tipping his hat to guests as they arrive. The mahogany grand staircase, ornate mirror and original lamp fixtures are still there. Yes, there are even the old ice chests with wire shelves used for dishes now, and deep "soaking" tubs.

Updated—Yet Still Classic: Our Vacation Rental Units have been updated from original. Fully furnished with mostly vintage 1960s furnishings, guests find our vacation rental units cozy, warm and inviting with modern amenities such as microwave, television, and Wi-Fi Internet. The kitchen is fully stocked with dishes and cookware for those guests that choose to cook “at-home”.

Convenient Downtown Stays: Stays at The Virginian offers a vacation of convenience. Being located at the south end of the Belltown Neighborhood puts our guests within walking distance to the Shopping District of downtown Seattle and close to Pike Place Market and the waterfront.

Nightlife at its Best! Belltown is the epicenter of Seattle’s restaurant scene, with hot nightclubs, cool shops, great places to play. Walking distance to all major attractions, and just a short bus or taxi ride to the rest.

Overall Guest Satisfaction

Check In
  • We have no issues with old buildings, in fact we love old buildings.
But we don't like old unclean buildings and unfortunately this apartment fall into that category.
    - Location is perfect.
    - Size is small but adequate.
    - Amenities are sufficient.
    - Charming building.
    - The door lock was in such poor condition we were never sure if we would be able to unlock it and get in or not (sometimes it worked straight away, sometimes you had to fiddle with it for 5 minutes).
    - The place felt unclean and dirty. Thick layers of dust on ledges and ventilation.
    - Torn sheets of questionable cleanliness
    - Booked for three people but only had two chairs.
    - WiFi didn't connect to the internet (we could connect to the router, but no outside connection).
    - Not furnished as in pictures.
    - No tv

In all, we wouldn't recommend the apartment until it gets properly cleaned.

  • We stayed at the Virginian for 3 nights. It's in the heart of the city where you can go down to Pike's for a morning danish or look around for a nice restaurant very easily. It's close to public transportation.

The check in/out process was very quick and simple.

The place itself could have been a lot cleaner - It's probably because it was located downtown in an old building, but even then, I felt like I needed to tiptoe or just lightly graze on the furniture and floor. The shower head was weak, and I would recommend bringing a pair of flip flops to wear in the tub.

There were no towels provided so I had to go to the local Target and buy one. The TV and Internet didn't work either. The TV not working was fine, but I did plan on working during this trip and couldn't because the wifi does not connect. I think this was our biggest issue during the trip since my friend and I both brought our laptops.

For some reason, the blankets smelled like cologne. I'm not sure if it was stemming from myself, if the blankets weren't washed, or if it's the smell of the detergent used but I did feel a bit uneasy about this during my sleep.

I'd recommend this place if you're just going somewhere to sleep, but not to stay in.

  • Everything about the location of this listing is fantastic! It is near a light rail station, which makes airport transportation easy and within walking distance to most of the major attractions. There are tons of restaurant options nearby. We did do some nighttime wandering and did not feel unsafe in the neighborhood. The building was also very secure with two locked doors between the street and the apartments.

We never met Steve in-person, but the check-in and check-out process went smoothly. He provided us with two sets of keys and answered my questions through the Airbnb app in a very timely manner.

Based on the reviews and description, the listing was pretty much what we were expecting although we thought it could stand to be cleaner. The middle-of-the-night clanking of the pipes was definitely something to get used to but despite the creaky floors, we surprisingly never heard any of the building's other residents moving around. We had very good weather while we were there so the apartment was neither too hot or cold. We did not use the kitchen or TV but were very thankful to see a large closet full of hangers which we used to our advantage. We had four people in our group and, thanks to the futon, all of us fit comfortably. The shower had really low water pressure but we're pretty sure there is no remedy for that in such an old building. Steve provided some soaps for us to use at the sink.

Be prepared for noise in the early morning hours from garbage trucks in the nearby alley. We brought our own towels and would recommend you do the same as the ones provided looked questionable. The sheets on the bed were fine, but the extra sheets and blankets provided for the futon had holes and spots on them. We were also pretty disappointed that the WiFi was not working and, based on previous reviews, this seems to be an ongoing issue.

Overall, you can't beat the price and location. If you just need a place to shower, sleep, and aren't a germaphobe, this is it. Since it was mostly as described we gave it 4 out of 5 stars but would note to anyone looking for suggestions that this is not the place to go if you are looking for a hotel experience. Minus 1 star for the broken WiFi and cleanliness.

  • Dear all. Steve was friendly and had everything set when I arrived. The apartment was nice. A little old-fashioned, but everything worked properly. Except for the wifi, which I regretted very much. And then there were the creaking pipes (read the other reactions), which were not really a big deal.

I had a good, affordable stay in Downtown Seattle.

  • This is our second time staying at the Virginian and you just cannot beat the location for this price!!! It's so central to everything like Pike Place, Belltown, and all of the neighborhood restaurants and transportation... Just... great!

(There's a direct bus (Line D) that takes you to Ballard in a lickety split and a bus that'll take you up Queen Anne hill... and Pike Place Market is a 8~10 minute walk at best)

However, this time around, the facilities did not seem up to task. I like that the building is old and has lots of character and the ease of checking in and checking out were great but it's not maintained extremely well so just expect that when you get there. It's still a great deal, just not the nicest place to stay.

It's decorated comfortably enough but the bed was really squeaky this time and so we actually opted to sleep on the futon. Additionally, I did not find the extra linens in the closet to seem so clean nor the towels so you might want to bring your own.

Lastly, we had a little snafu because the internet nor TV worked in our room. We let the TV go since we weren't planning on watching much TV anyway but the wifi was kind of important and it did not get fixed during our 3 night stay.

That being said, you get what you pay for and if it's your first time in the city, like it was for us last time, and you don't plan on spending much time indoors, it is totally worth it for location and price! There are a lot of airbnb rooms in the building but there are also residents. Anyways, we didn't run into many people in the building either times we stayed there.

  • I met Steve at his work to pick up the keys, he was very nice and it was a brief interaction. The apartment was not what I expected. It wasn't very clean, stains on the comforter, towels were dirty looking, ripped and stored in a dusty closet. There was a dirty/dusty pillowcase in the corner of the bedroom on the floor. The wifi was not working at all, it said i was logged in but wasn't working. My partner and I were so disgusted with the place that we only stayed one night and checked into a hotel the next night, which was cheaper than this apartment and MUCH cleaner with a great view. I would not recommend staying here, you can find a cheaper hotel.

  • Apartment had basic amenities in a very centralized location. If you need a place to stay, that is nothing fancy, with simple amenities in a convenient location, this will serve your needs. The host was strictly responsive to inquiries through airbnb messaging, but was very prompt and addressed any needs requested. Place could be more clean with newer sheets, towels, etc. But as previously mentioned, it has all the basics in a very convenient location.
