The space
Portland consistently ranks in the top 50 most livable cities in the world and in 2025 was ranked as NUMBER ONE foodie city in the U.S.

Nestled in the trees, this close-in RESIDENTIAL, private, homey, and spacious studio apartment provides a great place to replenish.

The 8 x 10 private balcony beckons you to sit outside surrounded by trees and overlooking our flower & vegetable garden and our chickens' antics. as you listen to the water fountain, enjoy year-round hummingbirds, and the distant sound of our neighbor's tree frogs. Our yard is enclosed by a cedar fence for added privacy.

Inside, a ceiling fan and heat pump/air conditioner keep you comfortable year-round.

While we absolutely LOVE how sun-drenched Purple House is, we have framed in purple/black thermal panel drapes that block out light. Extra panels are in a bag on the coatrack, in case you want to also cover up the front and French doors windows. The panels are easy on/easy off using the handy magnets.

We also provide purple eye masks just in case you want to sleep in- enjoying our pillow-top queen bed. We also have a double futon with memory foam topper.

After much research, we just bought a brand new Beautyrest Posturesmart queen set 6-2026 for our guests’ comfort.

There is a full laundry room you'll share with us, with washer and dryer and an over-sized drying rack system are in a shared space, just steps away. PLEASE ask and we will plan our laundry around your needs.

We have a cupboard full of games for all ages and a handcrafted Mancala game table. A bookshelf full of books, CDs, DVDs and even a few vinyl records to enjoy.

If you just want to use Purple House PDX as a rehearsal space, it has comfortably fit up to 18 big band musicians (and lots of "groupies"), for regular rehearsals.

It has also been the Portland base for The RT's when they come in from New York to play at The Waterfront Blues Festival, or Mississippi Studios.

There is a pearl drum set, various percussion and other instruments, music stands, an electric guitar with an amp, as well as an acoustic guitar. A full sound system, including mics and stands, may also be available to rent separately.

Love to read;especially on vacation? We have a wide selection the bookshelf in the apartment.

We also have a huge purple T.A.R.D.I.S.
British callbox inspired little free library that is beloved by our neighbors.

Guest access
Purple House PDX is a separate, upstairs, studio apartment, with your own private entry and 24/7 access. There is a keyless entrance code, personalized for each guest for security and easy access.

There is parking for one or two guest cars in the driveway, right next to the stairway up to the apartment. There is also a parking space to the left of the driveway and there is ample on-street parking if you have more guests with cars.

Motion detection lights and dawn-dusk purple twinkle lights make sure that your entry is well-lit and safe, no matter what time you come home.

The laundry room and over-sized, becoming tamed yard, are shared. Make sure to give us notice BEFORE going into the back yard so we can make sure our dog is put inside.

Other things to note
We love dogs and love it when we are able to go to a place and take our dog, so we recently decided to allow up to TWO well-behaved dogs. Sorry, but NO CATS due to serious allergies. Dog(s) need to have proof of being up to date on their vaccines and shots. There is a $35 fee per stay /per dog. Dogs are NOT allowed on the furniture.

We chipped our fenced, side yard with doggie/playground chips that you are welcome to use WITH your dog(s). It's required that you clean up promptly after your dog(s) and they are NEVER to be left alone in the apartment, parked car, OR in the yard. There are LOTS of wonderful places to walk your dog along with close-by dog parks. Sellwood Riverfront off leash dog park is especially awesome for beach fun and is only about 12 minutes away.

Our own rescue dog is a 6 y/o border collie mix.

IF you didn't bring a dog but need a "dose" of a dog, we'd be happy to invite you along on their walks. PLEASE let us know BEFORE going into the fenced yards. We will make sure to bring her inside, so you don't accidentally startle her.

We also have chickens that you can watch from the balcony. You’ll also be able to hear their happy clucking when they lay their prized eggs. No roosters. Please let us know if you're interested in tossing them special treats we provide.

Neighborhood highlights

Since we clearly cannot control where our house is located, please make sure that YOU want to be here, in a quiet RESIDENTIAL neighborhood that is close to everything. Almost every guest has rated us five stars for location since Purple House PDX has the best of both worlds. West Portland Park is a very friendly, safe and quiet Southwest RESIDENTIAL neighborhood. We're just 6 miles/10-15 min drive (depending on time of day), from downtown, yet close to nature all around. A short walk rewards you with a spectacular 360 view from Mt. Sylvania, parks, running trails and tracks. Tryon Creek Nature Park is also close.

We are a great home base to explore nearby villages (Multnomah Village is a nice walk away on Capital) and cities, since we're close to Beaverton, Tigard, Tualatin and Lake Oswego. Near Lewis & Clark College and Oregon Health and Science University (OHSU), Shriners Hospital and Doernbecher Children's Hospital. We're also just five blocks or so to Portland Community College, Sylvania. Washington Square, Bridgeport Plaza, restaurants, SW Community Center pool/gym, Jewish Community Center pool/gym, sports bars.

Lives in Portland, Oregon
Having lived in Portland since 1976, we think it's absolutely the BEST city around and we are always excited to share it with others! Don't just take our word for it: Portland was the ONLY U.S. City to be voted in 2015 as one of the top 25 most livable cities around the world and 2022 TOP Foodie City in U.S. We started hosting Airbnb in May, 2016 and are so deeply touched and humbled by the amazing guests we've met so far and look forward to those of you we've yet to meet. We absolutely love entertaining and sharing the many treasures of Portland and the great Pacific NW with others. As fairly seasoned travelers ourselves, we also know what makes for a great stay and are invested in providing that for YOU as our guests. Now that we're retired from being public servants for years, we have lots more time for our hobbies and travels. You'll often find us being "groupies" for The RT’s; our son's band. The RT’s play energetic and thought-filled originals that blend New Orleans Jazz, Delta Blues and Rock and Roll. Before the pandemic they played concerts and festivals all over the world and now, when covid permits, they may even be touring near your city. Who knows?! One day you might be able to say "I slept in the Portland Home of The R T's!" Portland's own musical treasures, The Norman Sylvester Band, keeps us dancing (we're teaching ourselves swing dance from youtube) to the blues around Portland. Want to learn how to make wine? Be a guest next Fall and go wine picking at a picture perfect u-pick farm; Z Farm-Hubbard. In September we picked over 1300 pounds of Pinot Noir grapes and always make it quite a party. We've made wine for the last 11 years. Bob also makes some of the best beer around from our homegrown hops. Enough about our adventures; here's to YOUR NEW ADVENTURES!
