Cool Columbia Heights Garden Apt.

Apartment - Entire home/apt · Fairmont Street Northwest, Washington, DC 20009, United States

This is a super fun apartment for your stay in DC. Located in Columbia Heights, the monuments and museums are just a few stops away. Lots of mid century modern vintage furnishings, including a tube Hi-Fi, and an amazing 1980 Bally pinball machine.

The Space

Garden apartment is in a 100 year old centrally located Columbia Heights townhouse. The space is open with a one large room with a queen bed, and a queen size sleep sofa, small but full kitchen, and bathroom. There are laundry facilities as well. Fresh linens are provided as well as a stocked kitchen with pots and pans, basic kitchen tools, dishes, and a commonly used spices. Nearly anything else you may need in the kitchen ( aside from groceries) is available on request.

The space is full of fun items and modern furnishings and the location is central to all of the things you'll want to do in Washington DC. A few blocks to tons of restaurants and nightlife, shopping, and a very short metro ride to downtown sights and museums.

The apartment sleeps 4 comfortably on a queen size platform bed, and a queen size sleeper sofa ( very comfortable, not a fold up sofa mattress) and is suitable for up to 6 guests with an additional Queen Airbed on request. The apartment has a 32" flat screen television with digital cable, a vintage tube Hi-fi stereo (accessible wirelessly), a selection of board games, a drum kit, and a vintage pinball machine.

Guest Access

Guests will have access to their own bathroom, and full kitchen with a gas stove. There's a vintage tube Hi-Fi to listen to your own music either wired or wirelessly. Play pinball on the vintage 1980 Xenon machine, or check your email on the provided iMac. There's a large L shaped couch to stretch out on after a long day seeing the sights, as well as a smart DVD player with access to Netflix, Youtube, Amazon Prime, and my own movie server with access to my own movie collection. There is also access to a washer and dryer should you need it during your stay.

Interaction with Guests

I live right upstairs if you need anything, and I'm always available, but once you check in you'll have the place to yourself.

Overall Guest Satisfaction

Check In
  • Joel and Shannon are wonderful hosts -- responsive, very willing to help out, and generous. The apartment is well stocked and perfectly located, with unique features such as a drum set you can play and pinball machine. More important when you're tired, the bed is very comfortable. And most important for us, the location is excellent, close to direct metro lines to most of the places you'd want to go and walkable to many of them. Also, the nearby shops were useful.

  • it was a pleasant stay on Joel's place. Everything was very clean and comfortable. the host was very detailed with all of my questions and attentive to us since we were not from the U.S couldn't ask for a better host and place
overall I will stay here again.

  • Joel's place was ideally located a short walk from the Columbia Heights metro. He was extremely flexible with check-in when our arrival time changed on short notice and he communicated well/quickly throughout the process. We didn't meet him personally, but Shannon did a great job greeting us and getting us settled. The pinball machine was a nice perk.

  • Joel and Shannon were incredible hosts. They were so welcoming and engaging. I felt like they went out of their way to make sure we were having a good time in DC -- even texting a chef friend to see if we could get into a restaurant that we had our sights set on.

My kids absolutely loved Joel and his toys - microscopes, drum sets and a pin ball machine. In fact my kids loved the apartment so much that when given a choice of what they wanted to do in DC for the afternoon they both wanted to go home and hang out in the apartment.

The apartment is very comfortable and well situated. It has virtually everything you'll need for a pleasant stay.

  • Joel's cozy basement getaway was the perfect retreat for our group of four. It was easy to get to and is a great location in the city whether you have a car or not. Joel was available to meet us whenever we got in, and was very gracious in accommodating any request!
The decor is fantastic, lots to look at and keep you entertained for a party night in! Music, pinball and a drum set what more could you ask for?! I'd highly recommend checking it out in your next trip to DC!

  • Joel is a wonderful host! The place is really comfortable and we felt like home. There is a very cool pinball machine in our room, Xenon the very first talking pinball machine. We all had a great time with her:) There are everything you need: a whole kitchen, laundry, TV, wifi, everything. He also had two very friendly dogs! I really recommend this place!

  • Great place with an awesome pinball machine!!! Excellent location with amazing restaurants close by on 11th St and right by the metro. Joel gave us some tips when we first got in, and our stay was great!

  • The appartment was very nice. We loved it. It's very big and provides everything you need and even a lot of things you don't need but that are great fun to have. I have to highlight here the vintage flipper which we used often and the TV that is connected to a movie database with plenty of movies. The TV as seen in the picture can be turned towards the bed so you can have a relaxing evening watching some really great movies.
The appartment can be a bit chilly since it's located in the cellar and has concrete floor but an electric heater is also provided. Moreover it is furnished with a lot of creativity and I like it a lot. It makes it very comfortable.
Another important reason why I recommend this appartment is Joel. He is a friendly and helpful host. Within one night we got an answer from him and the confirmation to stay there. When we went there he showed us how to use everything and even gave us hints what to see in Washington including a map. It couldn't have been easier for us.

  • Joel's place is as fun as it looks. It was exactly what I needed for my stay in D.C. Joel was easy to reach and was always super hospitable. I've stayed in a few places in Columbia Heights and this felt the most like an actual neighborhood. However, the retail, dining, and public transportation is close enough that you don't feel like you're missing anything. I extended my stay twice and would certainly recommend it.

  • Please see my other review for Joel. I inadvertently completed multiple bookings instead of just extending my original booking, thus the need for multiple reviews. My other review contains additional details, but, in short, Joel was great and the place was just what I wanted. Highly recommended.
