About This Listing
We have 3 Cabinas located on the level below the main house and pool. Each accommodate 4 persons with a queen size bed and a futon that opens to a double bed. They have private baths, kitchenettes and private patios with hammocks and rocking chairs.
• Nepenthe Bed and Breakfast is Beautiful piece of paradise located in the little town of El Castillo of La Fortuna in Costa Rica. We are 35 minutes traveling west from La Fortuna downtown. Surrounded by the magical rain forest and exotic wild life (like howler monkeys and toucans) you can appreciate the magnificent Arenal Volcano and the Arenal Lake, enjoy beautiful sunsets from our infinity edge pool or relax in the Jacuzzi or with a Massage in The Blue Lagoon Spa.
** An advice: because of our location a bit remote up in the hills, renting a car is recommended (a 4WD will be better) as activities and scenic attractions are spread out. This is cheaper in comparison with pay taxi to go to restaurants, attractions or transport from the airport.
** Tres Cabras Restaurant at Nepenthe is located on the grounds of Nepenthe and serve a daily prix fixe dinner menu with handmade food and fresh local ingredients.
• Spring feed swimming pool

Nepenthe is absolutely beautiful. The photographs don't do this place justice. The view is incredible. I would recommend going with a car because it's up a hilly road and taxis to La Fortuna are about $30 (one way); however I wouldn't recommend spending much time in La Fortuna because the Observatory Lodge, Butterfly Conservatory, and Ziplining (all a $20 cab ride) are much more worth your time. Agustine was incredible helpful and went above and beyond to help us (we were probably annoying guests because we didn't have a car).
My wife and I and our kids spent three nights at Nepenthe in April 2015. The setting is amazing! The pictures online do not do the beauty of Nepenthe's location justice. And the wildlife; we saw more birds staying here than in Monteverde! There are parrots and we even saw the only scarlet macaw of our trip during our stay. Our kids especially loved the pool. The room itself was basic and met our expectations. The people are friendly, helpful, and speak excellent English if your Spanish is a little rusty. We had only one issue during our stay and it was quickly remedied to our satisfaction. The road to Nepenthe is no joke; we would definitely recommend a 4x4 or AWD vehicle. We were prepared and loved that Nepenthe was out of the way. One of the best things Nepenthe has going for it is the restaurant on site. When we arrived they had only just opened after a change in ownership/management. "Benedict's" has great food, freshly prepared, by one of the most passionate chefs we've ever come across. He went out of the way to make each night special, and we dined there each night of our 3-night stay. We strongly recommend Nepenthe based on value, location, the hosts, and the amenities. Thanks again for a great stay!
My boyfriend and I had an amazing couple of days here, and our only complaint was that we wished we stayed longer!!
All reviews are accurate - you will definitely want a car with 4WD to get you here via 20-30 minutes of bumpy, dirt roads, but don't let that deter you! The view is worth every bump in the road!
Agustin was helpful with all set up communication - booking, massage reservations (highly recommended) and directions. His nephew, Alejandro, was a perfect host - personable, helpful, and really went over and beyond to make us comfortable and at peace in this beautiful setting. Speaking of - wow! That view!
Don't stay on the main stretch of touristy hotels but enjoy being at the tranquil Nepenthe. I highly recommend staying here and wish I could go back right now!
We had a lovely stay at Nepenthe, and really lucked out with the weather - we saw the volcano both days we were there, which evidently isn't the case for everyone.
Augstin has excellent road signs that guided us to Nepenthe, but the B&B was high on a rocky hill and would have been impossible to reach without an all-wheel-drive vehicle.
Augstin's nephew, Alejandro, was extremely helpful and courteous throughout out stay. We actually never met Augstin, but Alejandro cooked us amazing breakfasts and answered all of our questions about the area. He also was kind in letting us leave our luggage in the reception area on our last day, which allowed us to explore the volcano park/observatory.
My boyfriend and I loved our stay at Nepenthe! The views from the property are gorgeous and the staff were very friendly and helpful. The rooms are decently sized and clean. The restaurant on the grounds of Nepenthe is the best in El Castillo, and very convenient after a long day of traveling. We recommended Nepenthe to some friends of ours who came a week later and they loved it.
Agustin welcomed us to Nepenthe for a two-day stay over the New Year's holiday. Although the weather was not great (rainy both days, with no view of the volcano and limited view of the lake), we did have a good stay, especially with the on-site restaurant's (Tres Cabras's) New Year's Eve celebration. Though we did not eat there for a regular meal, the kebabs and drinks they served on NYE's were excellent.
The room we stayed in (Room #03, forest view) was fine, with a large bed and hot water in the shower. However, we did hear from one of the guests that the hot water was out in another room. We enjoyed the hot tub near the spa, but didn't get to enjoy the pool. Breakfast was typical Tico breakfast, with rice, beans, sausage, and plantains. Overall, we thought the price was a bit high for the accommodation and service but were fine with what we got.
The drive up the hill was difficult but possible in a two-wheel drive vehicle (Toyota Yaris, low clearance!). We enjoyed our stay and would recommend Nepenthe to a couple looking for a laid-back vacation in El Castillo.
