Description

A peaceful oasis, our mountain homestead includes two single BRs, a double BR, and a detached cabin. On a clear night, view the constellations overhead while listening to owls hoot back and forth. Nestled on a wooded hillside at the end of the road, our newly renovated home has three available guest rooms--two single occupancy bedrooms on the second floor, and one double occupancy bedroom on the third floor of the house. Each bedroom is listed separately on Airbnb, so if you are interested in more than one room, or a different sized room, please see our other listings. We also have a cabin listed through airbnb. It sleeps up to 5.

This bedroom listing that you are viewing here has a twin bed, and is located on the second floor. It is conveniently located across from the bathroom. All rooms include bed and bath linens, and access to two full bathrooms (one with a large stall and rain-shower, the other with a deep soaking tub--we also have a lovely outside shower available during warm months). A self-serve breakfast of locally produced foods is also included in nightly rate.

Our open living/dining room area is naturally well lit with views across the valley and woodlands. The house is sited above the confluence of two streams, and has a large south-facing deck, screened porch and stone patios, offering space for relaxing or working outdoors. High speed internet and wifi are available, but no television. Cell coverage is poor at the house, but a land line is available for domestic calls.

We have a friendly Corgi, a shy Great Pyrenees, a rescue poodle-ish pup and one gentle cat. We also have a flock of Icelandic chickens that tills our garden and provides fresh organic eggs. Many wild birds visit our feeders year round. In the summer, our house is surrounded by perennial and vegetable gardens, and a growing orchard on the hill above.

Our property is adjacent to the Appalachian Trail Corridor and is contiguous with Land Trust and town forest, offering access right out our backdoor to miles and miles of trails for walking, hiking, mountain biking and cross country skiing. Each season offers opportunities to glimpse wildlife and birds.

We are located 9 miles from the I-91/ I-89 interstate junction, within a short 20 minute drive to Dartmouth College/Hanover, NH, Woodstock, VT, as well as many ski areas and local attractions. Driving times from Boston: 2.5 hours; NYC: 5 hours; Montreal: 3.5 hours. Public transportation from Boston, New York and Burlington/Montreal (trains and buses) are available to nearby White River Junction. You will need a car to get around, as much of Vermont and New Hampshire is rural with little to no public transportation. There are a number of rental car agencies nearby in West Lebanon, NH/White River Jct, VT. There are many restaurants within a short drive (15-30 minutes).

We hope you will consider our home, Solheim ("sunhouse" in Norwegian) for a beautiful Vermont mountain retreat within easy driving distance of many northern New England attractions and activities year round.

All public spaces in house, all gardens and woods on our property. Use of kitchen if guests would like to bring personal food in and prepare own meals.

Guests are warmly welcomed to our home. We will be in residence during your stay, but you determine how much you want to interact. We orient you to the house, and are available to answer any questions. If you prefer to have privacy or less interaction, feel free to come and go as you please. If you enjoy some conversation or a shared breakfast with us, we are more than happy to engage--we've met many wonderful people through Airbnb!

We live at the end of a dirt road up in the mountains in east central Vermont. Although our home is surrounded on three sides by protected forest land with abundant trails for hiking, skiing, snowshoeing and mountain biking, we are only an easy 10-15 minute drive from several towns in the Upper Connecticut River Valley. White River Junction is 10 minutes down the river of the same name, and has grocery stores, restaurants, gas stations, etc… It is also the junction of I-89 and I-91. Just up I-91 one exit from White River Jct is the village of Norwich Vermont and Hanover, NH.

Public transportation from Boston, New York and Burlington/Montreal (trains and buses) are available to nearby White River Junction. During the winter months, Vermont roads require at least snow tires. Many people have 4 wheel drive vehicles, or use studded snow tires. Our road is well-maintained by the town, but it is a typical Vermont mountain road--it may be a challenge without good snow tires or 4 wheel drive until the plow comes through. If you have any questions, please ask!

What a wonderful place! I only stayed one night but that was enough to make it unforgettable. Communication & direction was excellent. Both Martha and Alexandra ( and all of their wonderful dogs) made me feel very welcome. I had the best sleep ever, delicious breakfast and wonderful conversations. Highly recommended!

Thank you, Melanie. We're glad you relaxed while here and we would love to have you stay with us again! Perhaps you will need to spend time at JHC in future and can stop here on your way. In the meantime, all our best to you, and if our travels bring us to London, we would love to look you up at your cheese shop. Could you share information with us?

This was my second stay with Alexandra and Martha and it was just as wonderful as my first time. Their home is elegant, cozy, warm and soulful. They are both exceptional hosts who understand true hospitality. They welcomed me into their home with great generosity. They are so thoughtful about their home they seem to have anticipated the needs of their guests, and it is evident in details from the beautiful bathroom to the the well stocked kitchen. If you want to experience the true essence of air bnb, spend time here.

Thank you, Judith! Please come back soon. We are reading the book you mentioned to us about Adaptogens...does it make sense that I would like to sample Rhodiola? We've been steeping Sacred Basil and enjoying every aspect of it: so aromatic and nurturing!

Alexandra and Martha were lovely hosts and I really enjoyed staying at their home! They were very considerate and made sure that I had everything I needed. They even helped me move my car when the driveway was a bit icy! I would definitely recommend staying here if anyone is interested in visiting the quieter parts of Vermont. :)

I live in Norwich, Vermont, but am a graduate student at Harvard, so commute to Boston regularly. My area of study is International Relations with an emphasis on sustainable development, education and human rights. I've been working in education and education administration, as well as organization development consulting for the past 20+ years. Our house is our home, homestead and sanctuary. We are enjoying developing our property according to permaculture principles and have put in a fruit tree orchard, honeybees, a simple rainwater catchment system, vegetable, perennial, forest and native species gardening are underway, and we are managing the land for sustainable biodiversity. In addition, we have a well established sugarbush with approximately 450 taps. Guests visiting during maple sugaring season may have the opportunity to participate--depending on mother nature and the trees.
