Cozy and comfortable 3 BD, 2 Bath, house in the Seabright neighborhood on the east side of Santa Cruz. Just a short walk to the beach, downtown and shopping. Full complement of appliances. Great for a couple's weekend away or a family vacation.

The Space

The Coop is a three bedroom, two bath home located on our block in the Seabright of Santa Cruz. The home can host up to 5 folks -- two bedrooms (full & single) downstairs with a shared bath and the light house queen bedroom upstairs overlooking our Windham tree and rooftops as well as eucalyptus heron sanctuary with its own private bathroom.
The bedrooms are cozy and the beds are comfy -- high quality linens, pillows and towels (of course!) and memory foam toppers (bien sur!)

Filled with natural light, the open floor plan boasts a well appointed kitchen, perfect for the gourmet in you,
and dining room/living room area with a large farm house table, perfect for the Visual Artist in you -- crafter, painter, quilt maker, collagist. Original photography bedeck the walls while hardwood floors and spare furnishings may inspire the dancer in you to push it all out of the way and take over! (It did in me!)

Garden back room with cable TV (for the couch potato in you), laundry room with washer/dryer and deep laundry sink (rinsing paint brushes!), office for organizing those papers, outdoor shower for rinsing off surf and sand and two large decks (BBQ) with generous outdoor seating, relaxing double hammock under the arbor and a glorious variety of scented roses flourishing every where make this home a relaxing, comfortable space for a vacation or work retreat.
Walk, bike or drive to everything Santa Cruz -- beach, mountains. boardwalk , the Pacific Garden Mall, great restaurants, wine tasting and music venues -- are all within 5 minutes.

Guest Access

Complete access to the house, front and back yards.

Interaction with Guests

I liaison will greet the guests otherwise they have complete privacy.

The Neighborhood

The house is in a quiet neighborhood consisting of primarily detached single family houses. The house is about 3/4 of a mile from Seabright beach, less than a mile from downtown Santa Cruz, about 1 mile from the Santa Cruz Beach Boardwalk. There is perhaps no place in Santa Cruz better for shopping: within walking distance are: Shoppers' Corner, Whole Foods, Staff of Life, and a Safeway.

Getting around

There is a bus line with a stop 3 blocks from the house which runs to downtown where it is possible to transfer to buses that go to all parts of Santa Cruz. The house also comes with bicycles that can be borrowed for cruising around.

  • Katie--I hope your Thanksgiving was as enjoyable and memorable as the one we enjoyed in your lovely home! The proximity to the beach, your delightful deck and hammock, the 'chalk table' all made for a wonderful holiday. Thanks!

  • The Coop was beautiful and extremely comfortable for my friends and me to stay in to attend a wedding in Santa Cruz. My boyfriend and I brought bikes; the boardwalk was a less than 10 minute ride. We cruised up to the lighthouse and past, all along the beach. One can hear the barks of seals nearby which I thought was cool. We cooked in the cozy kitchen and hung out outside on the patio a lot as well.

Katie responded to all my questions quickly and was really nice in all our exchanges. I didn't get to meet her or get the tour, as I had to work that day, but everything went smoothly. Great house, great neighborhood, I'd definitely come back.

    Thank you, Katie!

  • The house was perfect for a weekend getaway. It's located in a quiet neighborhood, but is a quick bike ride or leisurely walk to downtown or the boardwalk in Santa Cruz. Capitola was also just a 30 minute bike ride away.

The furnishing were great and Katie made us feel very welcomed during our visit. The house was so nice, both my wife and parents (met us in SC for the weekend from Arizona) kept commenting on how great a place it was.

  • We had a wonderful stay at the Coop. Katie is an exceptionally friendly host and greeted us upon arrival, made sure we understood our way around the house and gave great recommendations for places to go/see/eat around town. The house is very comfortable, clean, well decorated and easily accommodated our group of 6 (with a little extra help from Katie and the Aerobed). The backyard patio and hammock were great too.

  • We stayed at The Coop for 4 nights and enjoyed both the location and the house itself. Due to scheduling issues, we didn't actually get to meet Katie, but she made it easy for us to get the keys and stayed in touch via text msg, answering any q's we might have almost immediately. The house was furnished beautifully for a rental and was very inviting and homey. The location is great, with Seabright beach a 10-12 min walk and the Boardwalk approximately 20 mins away.

I would warn the light sensitive that the upstairs bedroom with the queen bed has NO window coverings whatsoever, and windows are on all four walls, so the room receives street and moon light all night, and you'll be getting up with the sunrise.

Also, like so many homes in Santa Cruz, there is no air conditioning, so if you happen to get unusually warm nights (or at least unusually warm for Seattleites :) ) like we did and need to keep the windows open, the street noise (until 11:30 or so) may keep you up if you try to go to bed early, and once that dies down and is peaceful, you can hear the sea lions start up as early as 4:00am.

After the first night, we went out and bought a fan and that resolved the need to keep the windows open and we slept better if not longer since the sun still got us up bright and early. Our kids were in the other two rooms and they had no issues as they had window coverings and were cooler being on the first floor.

We really liked the fully furnished kitchen and big dining area for family dinners and the birdhouse twin bedroom was an adorable room for our 7 year old daughter. I also was able to make use of the separate office space since this was a working trip for me, and enjoyed the fact there were books in there which made it feel like you were home. The kids enjoyed playing in the backyard and swinging in the hammock and were fascinated by having a cactus in the yard!

A few small nits: No fans, and no hairdryers provided. The tabletop ironing board provided was missing its back two feet and had a tear across the middle, which made it very difficult to use. (Most people probably don't iron on vacation so this is no biggie, but I was working up in the Valley while my family enjoyed the beach.)

Despite any small inconveniences we encountered we would definitely rent The Coop again for the locale, the decor and Katie's hospitality.

    Response from Katie:

Thank you for keen observations, Chris. We will definitely look into (and under, over and above) them. Glad you were able to enjoy despite the light at sunrise and sea lions ~ both of which I treasure by the way!

  • When one travels, there is a hope and need that when you reach your destination you will find a welcoming sight, a welcoming face, and feeling of "welcome home", for however long the destination stay is.
When we pulled up to this house, the house was a "welcome sight". Katie called out "welcome", and once we crossed the threshold, we were in a "welcoming home"...Our stay was wonderful. The weather was Santa Cruz perfect. The layout of the house was better than I had hoped from photos. Truly, our stay was wonderful. There were three generations, and the accommodations were "perfect...that's a quote from the eldest (88) and affirmation from the others.
Would I have need to visit Santa Cruz Ca again, I would stay here in a heartbeat.

  • Had an absolutely wonderful time at the Coop. It was the perfect place for our 5 person party. Though we didnt use the house as much as I would have liked, due to being in town for a wedding. It was the perfect place to come and relax at during our down times. It gave everyone their own space and we absolutely loved relaxing in the back yard and in the living room. The location is perfect, close to everything and I couldn't have asked for a better host. Katie was very accommodating of my scheduling issues due to flights and very open to sharing about the town and the things to do in the town. Katie also was happy to have an air mattress set up to accommodate our need for one additional bed. I highly encourage you to take some time and stay at the Coop you won't regret it.

  • Katie met us at the door and gave us a tour of the house, making sure we knew where everything was and letting us know about local attractions and restaurants. She was a dream to work with: punctual, detail oriented and with a really friendly personality. The coop was great. Large, airy rooms with a fabulous backyard (we particularly enjoyed the hammock). The coop was exactly what we hoped it would be: a home away from home.

  • The Coop was perfect for my family. We are two adults, a three year old, a six year old, and a twelve year old. The younger children shared the large downstairs bed, and the older child took the smaller downstairs bed. All of the beds and furnishings were in excellent condition and very comfortable. The house is decorated very nicely. We walked to the boardwalk once, but after that we drove. The combination of distance and little kids made the walk a bit too long to repeat. The neighborhood is quiet and nice. Whole foods and a great crepe place are a short walk away. The owner is very electric vehicle friendly, and between charging at her house, the wharf, the Walgreens, and the Tesla supercharger in Gilroy, our Tesla never dropped below 200 miles of range. We intend to come back to Santa Cruz, and the Coop is our first choice. The only downside that mattered was AT&T's poor cell coverage, but while an issue at the Coop, that seems to be equally troublesome throughout a lot of Santa Cruz. There is plenty of signal for a personal call, but every call I took for work was greeted with complaints about voice signal quality. I doubt this is specific to the Coop, though, and since the wifi at the Coop works great, next time I'll just use (website hidden).

Overall impression: far better than a hotel, owner is super nice, and we are definitely returning (and when the kids are older, I suspect we'll do more walking to the nearby attractions!).
