Shared apartment with beautiful view of the neighborhood. Everything you need from nightlife to shopping is within steps of the apartment.
Mike and Laura have an extra bedroom with a Queen Size bed ( for up to 2 people), big storage closet. The bedroom is set in the front of the apartment, so you'll have a lot of privacy when we are home, but are welcome to hangout in the Living room/TV room/Reading room/Kitchen.
We provide some extras for your kitchen (juice, milk, bread, fruit, coffee) and bathroom use (soaps, shampoo/conditioner, towels, hair dryer).
When the weather allows, the back terrace is a wonderful place that most of our guests just love to hangout and read a book or just watch the neighborhood in action.
You'll have your own shelf in the refrigerator for any personal groceries...all guests are welcome to make food in the kitchen, we just ask that you clean up after each meal.
Let us know if you have a regular bathroom schedule during the week...we both may be up early on the weekdays getting ready around 6:30-7:30am.
We love suggesting places to go and would be happy to hangout if you would like to trade stories and experiences. Mike and Laura work long hours during the week, so you'll have a lot of private time to relax.
We'll be around in the evenings and most weekends, so let us know if you have questions while you're here and if our schedules match up we may be up for getting some pizza with our guests!
Ukrainian Village / West Town is a beautifully tree-lined neighborhood, with ornate churches, large historic homes, delicious food, fun bars, nightclubs, cafes, shopping...We've got maps!
Hot breakfast is available at Sunrise Cafe, which is just down the street. Also check out Feed, Dark Matter (coffee), Bite, Phil's Last Stand, Roots Pizza.
1. Rent a bike: walk to the corner and rent a Divvy Bike for $7 (exchange the bike every 30 minutes throughout the city and you'll have a bike all day).
2. Take the bus: Walk across the street and get the bus that takes you all the way to Lake Michigan and Navy Pier. Along the way, get off the bus at the Blue/Brown/Red Line trains, John Hancock Building, Magnificent Mile, Water Tower Place, Northwestern University Campus and many other fun places.
3. The Blue Line train is a 15-20 minute walk down Chicago ave. Taxis are very easy to pick up anywhere in the neighborhood and is the best way to get here from the Midway/O'Hare airports. Taxis from the airports are typically around $30-$35.
We work a lot during the week, so please just let us know if you have a set or flexible arrival/departure/daily bathroom schedule with times, so we can determine whether we need to make adjustments to our schedule.

Stayed there for the second time in one year, and everything was *perfect* again. Would definitely stay yet again. Thanks much, Laura and Michael!
Mike was a great host, I stayed with him for 6 weeks ... Very friendly guy ! The appartement is near from the Loop ! Perfect place to stay !
I stayed with Mike for 3 months for an internship at UIC. It was a great experience! The apartment itself was great, it was in a great location, and Mike was always friendly and even took me out to meet his friends. I really enjoyed getting to know the other travelers in the apartment as they came through. Mike is a great guy and I would highly recommend staying with him if you get the opportunity!
Michael is a great host, who is very easy going and will do his best to make your stay as comfortable as possible. Although he is busy, he will try to see how you are doing and if you need anything.
I rented the room above for a month and I would definitely do it again. The closet is large, there is an alarm clock, great air conditioning, and enough electrical outlets to power anything you need. The only minor things that I wish was different was that the bed was too soft for my liking (personal preference) and it can be a bit loud outside on Chicago Ave in the evening.
The place overall was fairly clean, though it could be a little more well kept (renters please try to upkeep the place since Michael is pretty busy). I walked around barefoot without any problems or bugs, the washroom was spacious and again had all the supplies you would need. The common room is very nice for reading for relaxing on a rocking chair or sofa. The kitchen is stocked with fruits, pasta, bread, coffee, and many other little things that make the stay convenient. For those that are staying for a longer time, there is a pretty big fridge with all the cookware, dishware, and cooking appliances to make your meals. There is a nice little work out bench with some weights in the apartment too. The deck was nice if you want to get some sun or just talk on the phone outside, there is a small BBQ/grill (though I didn't use it) but the chairs could use a cleaning since there are no chair covers and they stay outside all the time.
The location is very convenient as you can see on (website hidden) maps, I took the 66 bus towards Navy Pier very frequently to go downtown, Dominick's (grocery store) is literally right across the street, along with Kasia (best perogies in the city). If you have a car, there is free parking on Hoyne and I felt fairly safe walking around at night. There is also great food up in the Wicker Park area, a short ride up Damen on the 50 bus.
Overall, for the price, location, convenience, and friendliness, I would not hesitate to recommend this place to any of my friends if they need a place to stay for any amount of time.
I stayed at Michael's house for two months and enjoyed my stay. If you are new to Chicago then location is very important. Michael's house is located in a great neighborhood - safe, easy access to restaurants, grocery stores and transportation lines. It normally takes about 20 - 25 minutes to reach downtown from Michael's house (very convenient). Michael usually has a lot of tenants at the place but everybody respects each others space.
Drawback: Closest laundromat is 2 blocks away.
Michael is a VERY nice, quiet, laid back guy. The apartment and room I stayed in were fine, clean, uncluttered. Plenty of amenities if you show up with nothing like towels, sheets, soap, etc. He obviously goes out of his way to make your stay as comfortable as possible.
The location is excellent, with the 66 CTA Bus taking you to the Blue Line or near north of downtown. Several excellent restaurants within one to tow blocks, including a VERY nice breakfast place called Sunrise, and Starbucks and big Grocery store right across the street from Michael's front door. You can also catch the Damen bus, #50, a short ride or long walk to one of the hippest areas in Chicago, at Damen and North Ave.
Both being in the muscle therapy business, we have a few things in common. But as I was really busy, so was Michael with his work, so we had barely any time to chat much or hang out. Hopefully we'll remedy that sometime in the future.
But I have to say, Michael is such a great guy I actually felt guilty not staying few more weeks!!!
I would highly recommend Mike Rizzo. His location has easy access, he provides ample space and good local food recommendations.
Michael was a great host! Very friendly, generous and helpful. I had a great vacation!
The room was comfy and the location is pretty good. There's a supermarket, starbucks, ukranian deli, 24 hour subway (food), 24 hour diner, and chinese, all really close and authentic tacos not too far away. Also, one bus from the front of the apartment, straight to navy pier.
I recommend this stay. Definitely worth the price. I don't suggest you take this room if you plan on sleeping all day. Take Michael's other room that's not facing the main street if you need it to be more quiet.
Great place to stay in Chicago!
Mike is a super host, friendly, outgoing and really helpful!
He provided me everything I needed(soap, shampoo, hairdryer, maps etc. EVERYTHING!!). The location is awesome you'll find markets, great vintage shops and super nice Delis!
I was there for a month loving my house and my neighbourhood. Mike's house is located in one of the nicest area in Chicago, close to downtown, The bus stop is in front of the house and the Subway BlueLine 15 min walking.
I definitely recommend the apartment: super host and super area!
You won't regret!
Life changing experience! Most comfortable couches in Chicago!!!
