House is decorated Provencal French! We are a well traveled couple who love guests!

The Space

Our neighborhood, Northern Liberties was named Philly's Most Hipster 'Hood, Feb, 2014. (website hidden)(phone number hidden).html
And NY Mag wrote a great blurb about our Airbnb specifically in the Travel section on Aug 31, 2012!
It's called, "Soak up the Art Scene in Philadelphia" by Rebecca Dalzell- "Where to Stay in Philadelphia."
We are one of three places they recommend in Philly!
(*read the paragraph at bottom of this description)

Visit beautiful Philadelphia, home of the newly re-opened Barnes museum. Did you know we have a wonderful Rodin museum here in Philly? The Mutter museum full of medical oddities? Eastern State Penitentiary tours...Reading Terminal market with the Amish making pretzels and serving them warm...

We welcome you to our 1853 three story, corner -city townhouse.
Your own 2nd floor in our home...with a private bedroom with queen sized bed & private bathroom.
There is also a TV and reading area for your use.
We walk through the 2nd floor hallway to get to our 3rd floor. (Painted your entire guest floor the end of November 2013- Bright, Provencal colors! And a brand new Queen sized mattress!)
Luxury plush robes, made out of soft, ecological bamboo, are waiting for you!
House is decorated Provencal, as we are obsessed with all things French! We are a well traveled couple who love guests!
Very liberal in all respects... Intermediate French spoken.
Continental breakfast with organic, local products (help yourself, no set time...), is lovely at the table in the private back sunroom/conservatory (weather permitting) -or inside at the dining room table...Beautiful, relaxing sunroom. Have an aperitif, a bottle of wine, and relax and watch the sun set. There is a nice sized back garden and a petanque court... Fresh figs from our fig tree in season.

We have an indoor cat, but keep the door closed to your bedroom. She does not go in there, and stays upstairs on the 3rd floor with us at night.
Singha is 18 (90 in human years), elderly, shy, hard of hearing- and Yowls loudly!! -UPDATE: She is definitely loud!

Of course, we have free Wifi...and also Wii & WiiFit.
Room air conditioner in your bedroom (during summer months),
Locally made pottery bathroom sink and vanity in your bath as well. (not pictured)

Our room starts at $100 a night for one person. It is an extra $20 for a 2nd person, and a bit more on holidays and weekends. We do not have a cleaning fee, or a minimum amount of nights required to stay. Our house has a lot of antiques. If you break it, you do need to pay for it!
No hidden costs. Airbnb does charge a service fee to help us with booking.

Location is Northern Liberties: Center City Philadelphia. Northern Liberties is a very trendy, artsy section of Philly, similar to the Canal St. Martin/Belleville area in Paris or a bit like the Village or parts of Brooklyn. Lots of cafes, artist galleries, restaurants and shops. The Piazza is less than two blocks away.

**Vibrant and urban area...this is the City, definitely not the suburbs! -- with people on the street, buses, traffic, can be loud, as your room is in the front of the house! In the Spring and Fall, with the windows open-it is quite noisy.

We have a great coffee shop one block away-One Shot Coffee-and about 5 other coffee shops & tea rooms within our neighborhood. (One Shot has some vegan food). The Random Tea Room is cool...
Lots of tasty restaurants are just blocks away: Standard Tap (gastropub with local beer & roof deck), Jerry's Bar, Bar Ferdinand (Tapas), Paesano's (Sandwiches), N. Third, Silk City, Green Eggs & Honey's (Diners), Tiffin, Ekta (Indian) BYOB's, Circles (Thai), Modo Mio (Italian) BYOB and many, many others. We'd be happy to recommend restaurants in our 'hood or anywhere in Philadelphia.

It's a nice walk to the Liberty Bell-Constitution Center-Old City; a bit over a mile, or the bus stops right in front of our house. We are right in between the Girard or Spring Garden stops of the Market/Frankford El. About 4 blocks from Girard and 6 blocks from Spring Garden. Check the SEPTA schedule for buses up Spring Garden to get to the Museums.
On street free parking, no meters.
City Fitness gym is very friendly-at 2nd & Spring Garden.

If we are booked for the dates you wish to stay with us, we recommend Airbnb's - "Bamboo B&B in Art Museum area"- hosted by our friends Chantal & Bill. Their home is stunning and you will love their hospitality. They are super nice people!

*NY Mag Review: *"Spread out on the second floor of an 1853 row house at French Philly (from $120), a bed and breakfast run by a friendly couple in trendy Northern Liberties. The space includes a private bathroom and art-filled library, but you can also make use of the downstairs sunroom, decorated with a wine-themed mosaic by local artist Isaiah Zagar. Be sure to mine the owners, who are 30-year residents, for tips on the area like where to find the hidden Maxfield Parrish Mosaic."

Guest Access

Guest Access is the entire 2nd floor. We do walk through the 2nd floor hallway to get to our 3rd floor.
Breakfast is served on the 1st floor; in the sunroom when it is warm enough-or inside.

Interaction with Guests

We leave a Continental breakfast out at your own leisure to help yourself, while we are working upstairs or at our office. However, if you need tourist information, restaurant recommendations, etc. -we are happy to share our love of Philly with you!

The Neighborhood

Great neighborhood! We have a combination of all types of people, all types of restaurants and shops, and more coffee shops than you can imagine!
*It does get noisy at night, especially on weekend nights, with people out and about and enjoying the neighborhood and buses! Especially with the windows open in the Spring and Fall.

Getting around

The bus stop is right in front of our house - coming from Center City, and a block away to go into the city. The Spring Garden and Girard subway on the Market/Frankford El line are within 4-6 blocks away. Or, it's a bit over a mile to walk to the Liberty Bell and tourist sights, we do it all the time!

Other Things to Note

We welcome you to our home. You are definitely staying on a floor of our house, not a fancy B&B. Your bedroom and bathroom are private, and we respect your privacy....but please note we are not an Inn. (No doilies!)...we are not a hotel, and we have jobs...that means the check out is at 11am, and the check in at 3pm at the earliest because we can't be there before. It also means that we don't provide services you'll find in a hotel.

Overall Guest Satisfaction

Check In
  • We spent a great night in Susan & Sam's home. They were very welcoming and make us feel at ease, for what was our first experience with AirBnb. We enjoyed the private bathroom, breakfast in the morning and good advice. The center of Philly is very close-by, by subway or by walk. I know where to stay next time I'm in town. :)

  • It was a really nice place to stay in Philadelphia with a great cafe and restaurants around. Susan and Sam were very nice hosts. A breakfast with juice, coffee, cereals and delicious jams was included. We can really recommend this room with own bathroom.

  • We've spent a wonderful time at Susan&sam's in Philadelphia and meeting Susan & Sam has made it a memorable experience. We felt like staying in the french ambassy, a bit of france here in Philadelphia, thanks a lot for the warm welcome and more importantly as frenchmen, the gastronomic advices !

    April 2014
  • Our stay with Susan and Sam was great. They were very warm and friendly and gave us some great tips on visiting Philadelphia...and Paris. The bed was wonderful and we slept great. Would definitely come back again!

    March 2014

Definitely a place where to stay, Susan and Sam were amazing host. And I can't thank them enough for everything.

    February 2014
  • I really enjoyed staying at French Philly. Susan & Sam are great hosts, very friendly and warm. There's lot of room on the second floor and the bedroom is especially comfortable. I had a great time in Philly and between a vert short subway ride or a pleasant walk, I got to everywhere I wanted to go within Center City as well as being able to explore the North Liberties area. I only wish I had more time!

    January 2014
  • Warm friendly home in a very walkable neighborhood. Our hosts provided an excellent continental breakfast and were able to accommodate my vegan diet.

    December 2013
  • My wife and I went down to Philly for me to run the marathon, and we made a 4-day vacation out of the event. Susan and Sam were perfect hosts. Relaxed and welcoming atmosphere. It was a great jumping off point to see the city, get a feel for life in Philly, and run the marathon. In reality, if you read the comments listed below by previous guests, I can’t really add anything to what has already been said. Can’t speak highly enough of Sam and Susan.

    Thank you for your hospitality!

    November 2013

    November 2013
  • Susan and Sam are the nicest of hosts, friendly and accommodating. Their house is clean, cozy and warm. I hope we can stay there next time we are visiting Philly.

You are staying in our house, very comfortable and clean, we get a lot of compliments about how comfortable the queen sized bed is...this is definitely not a fancy style "inn", but there is lots of room on your own floor in our city townhome, with privacy in the bedroom and bathroom. We leave you alone for Continental breakfast -getting up at your own leisure to help yourself. enJOY every moment! And, remember to laugh and breathe!
