Description

The space

We love our Gleniffer home -- beautiful is an understatement trying to describe the typical response to arriving in this northern NSW series of river Valleys called the Bellinger Valley and including destinations like Kalang, Thora and the Never Never Creek. Our place is located in a quite precious part of the globe called Promised Land, romantically named by an enraptured Italian farmer. But it won't stay like this forever without management of our riparian (river) vegetation. All moneys from Air BnB help us to protect this place. So thankyou in advance! Australia's native bush appreciates your patronage!!
We embrace the environment here, enjoying its natural bounty -- moments of peace, its rain storms, its cacophony of birdlife and the meandering or flooding/raging River.
Our 3-part tree house was designed by respected Australian architect, Richard LePlastrier. He thoughtfully designed for the local climate with minimalist iron/timber and flywire and built in 1980 by a meticulous Dutchman Henk Mulder. Its architecture is inherent to your experience sleeping, congregating and chilling from up high in your treehouse River Room.

The River Room is a very BIG space, detached via walkway from our main home. It is simply furnished which best suits its minimalist architecture. You sleep in a comfy King-sized bed and have extensive desk & couch space for writing, painting, reading and quiet time in what amounts to your own living room, not just bedroom. One wall opens up like a garage door and reveals the Never Never Creek, just metres below.

It lends a peacefulness to our home that is hard to quantify or express.

You are the only guests and to ensure your experience is in keeping with our neighborhood atmospheric, we request absolutely no visitors during your stay.

TELECOMMUNICATIONS
We cater in the most basic of ways for tech heads! The River Room has phone reception but no TV. There's a basic music player and good LED reading (a TV is in nearby shared lounge/kitchen, but truly, it's probably not going to be your focus whilst staying here).

Please note we offer no unnecessary frills or clutter! Having said that, you have the most comfortable of beds in the rarest of surroundings.

If you book the River Room for 1/2 adults and/or a baby or older children (likely it's not suitable for energetic toddlers), your family can request a "special offer" for additional bedding from Air BnB. Extra family members are charged per bed occupied @ same rate of AUD$30 plus a one off cleaning fee.
Or there are terrific other accommodation options nearby -- Promised Land Cottages and Aniseed and Cottonwood.

Or there's "The Hut" on the edge of our property which is offered separately on the Air BnB site and has a double and single bed and its own bathroom -- with compost toilet and beautiful shower.

The River Room itself is NOT suitable for a group of adults.
It only suits 2 adults.

Your bathroom is along a short walkway (ie: it is close but it is not an ensuite). It's open to the surrounding environment but discreetly designed for privacy. We love it!

Your wonderfully drenching shower, basin and toilet is alongside our 2nd building containing our shared kitchen and shared lounge areas.
See photos.
It is private but constructed so you can enjoy your rainforest surrounds.

In summer or winter, you may like to use a dressing gown/wrap.

SWIMMING THE NEVER NEVER
Probably our most special feature is that you don't have to go anywhere else to find somewhere to walk or swim. Swimming in summer is literally at your doorstep in clean and deep fresh nearby waterholes. Talk to us about fish/eels and water monitors and platypus and very occasional bull routs and cat fish who live here too!

LONG STAYS / WALKING/ BIKE RIDING
Go to Dorrigo and Ebor for their excellent guided walks and extensive trackways within the NSW Parks and Wildlife managed areas within half an hour of our Valley.

There are many astounding and well managed National Parks at nearby Dorrigo and the Coast at Bonville and offshore, the Solitary Islands for wondrous diving.

The Tree House is a destination in itself, in a valley that offers enough activity for a prolonged stay.

You can canoe, ride a bicycle and even horseride with the help of nearby Valery Trails.

Close to us at Tallowood Point is the highest rainfall regularly recorded in NSW, guaranteeing a healthy riparian zone with the help of dedicated regeneration efforts by local families and authorities.

We enjoy sublime winter days which are usually warm and sunny before you retire and tuck under your River Room doona!
Summers are glorious with sub-tropical balmy nights. We are grateful for the rainforest shade and the refreshing river waters during the hotter daytime hours.

Within half an hour, the surf stretches are renown for the small crowd usually sharing its beaches.

But it won't stay this way forever without the thoughtful efforts of locals and visitors combined. Regeneration and weeding preoccupies us all but with the rich rewards of a healthy, thriving native bush riparian zone.

We encourage you to soak it up, relaxing, slowing down, treading lightly.

Most of our neighborhood walk and cycle and we encourage all visitors to do the same.

PARKING
Plenty of onsite parking

YOUR HOSTS
A member of our family is home during your stay.

We sleep over the far side of our property where we have our own bathroom and private living spaces.

The layout of our treehouse means you can be social with your hosts, joining us in our north-facing Sunroom or outside on the skin overlooking the River -- or keep very much to yourselves!

TELECOMMUNICATIONS
Telstra works well here.
We also have a Big Pond toggle you can access on request via wireless router but it is not suitable for data download. Our rural area is currently NOT serviced by high speed NBN And sharing one toggle slows down its efficiency. If you use ours please never use for music or video download. Telstra works well for your smart phone internet use. Check any other mobile networks for their advised reception quality.

CHILDREN NEED SUPERVISING
And if you are bringing children, remember it is a treehouse and if you are coming here to relax, you need to feel confident and not have to worry about them! All children are different so we cannot really give advice but generally, most children are fine other than energetic and inquisitive toddlers!

You are staying in a rural area. Be prepared (entirely unpredictable) for BUSH LIFE.

OPTION TO COOK OVER LONG STAYS
Our kitchen and bbq can be shared/negotiated depending on your meal preferences/times.

Or heat up your takeaway food in our microwave and retire to your River Room. Most guests are on vacation and like to buy from Bellingen's delicatessan, bakery or other cafe's, bringing home some basic snack and breakfast food - keeping things simple. Our vegetable and fruit garden also has fresh in season offerings. Help yourself.

Ask about using our kitchen/lounge wing during long stays.

HOUSE LAYOUT
We have four buildings and 2 sheds.
The River Room, Kitchen wing and our private wing are linked by walkways.
The Hut (also offered on Air BnB site) is a separate building set on the far side of our property.
Mostly we or a member of our family is home during your stay.
Ask about using our kitchen/lounge wing for TV and cooking during long stays.

We sleep over the far side of our property where we have our own bathroom and private living spaces.

The layout of our treehouse means you can be social with your hosts or keep very much to yourselves! STRICTLY no visitors. This is a place for you to wind down, not up. And we would hate having to send you packing in the middle of the night if we discover this request has been disrespected!! So please don't invite friends to the house at any time, day or night.

Your bathroom is along a short walkway (ie: it is close but it is not an ensuite).

Your wonderfully drenching shower, basin and toilet is alongside our 2nd building containing our shared kitchen and shared lounge areas. See photos. It is private but constructed so you can enjoy your rainforest surrounds.

Inside the shared Kitchen wing are located "The Cave" and "The Sunroom." See the pictures!

We have a Big Pond toggle you can access via wireless router. But you may prefer to bring your own toggle given several people sharing one toggle slows down its efficiency. If you use ours you can network anywhere in the shared house. Telstra works well. Check any other networks for their advised reception quality.

OUTDOOR KITCHEN
Walk downstairs and underneath one of the house wings (there are three) is an outdoor BBQ area for hot summer evening meals and with basic kitchen facilities including dish washing sink and cutlery/plates/cutting boards etc

Nearby you can jump on the gigantic trampoline.

FULLY EQUIPPED KITCHEN
The indoor Kitchen is timeless design, functional basic equipment (replace any accidental breakages, thanks!), fridge, gas tops including a wok gas flame which doubles for slow cooking. The oven currently is out of order, awaiting French spare parts!.

Both kitchens are shared/negotiated depending on your meal preferences/times.

Or heat up your takeaway food in our microwave and retire to your River Room.

LAUNDRY
If you're on a driving holiday, you'll be happy to get some washing done here. Bring your laundry powder.

Interaction with guests

If we're around, we love to chat in our sunroom or on out outside deck nicknamed "the Skink" overhanging the Creek, especially in the evening as the sun sets. As mentioned, you are the only guests in our home.

If you feel like eating local and have a budget for a catered dinner, give our mate Clayton Donovan a call. Research a taste of his food -- local oysters, local finger limes ("Citrus Caviar") and avocado foam on a new Australian TV food program on ABC TV.

Similarly, via Bellingen township you can easily find good spa and health practioners.

The neighborhood

Precious natural places, largely spared of suburbia let alone mining, are increasingly rare in the world. We are privileged to live in one of those neighborhoods. The Valley has coastal and hinterland national parks and also hosts special musical and cultural events including the River, Jazz and Readers&Writers Festivals and the new in 2015 was the Bello Winter Festival staged by the successful Mullumbimby Festival management team. The region is dubbed "Northern Rivers" because the district has so many river systems small and large meander through our valleys and coastal properties.

Getting around

You need a car or a bicycle.

Other things to note

You are staying in a rural area. Be prepared (entirely unpredictable) for bush life. And if you are bringing children, remember it is a treehouse and if you are coming here to relax, you need to feel confident and not have to worry about them! All children are different so we cannot really give advice but generally, most children are fine other than energetic and inquisitive toddlers!

House Rules
No smoking
Not suitable for pets
No parties or events
Check in time is 2PM - 9PM

SMOKERS OUTSIDE
Plenty of outside areas for smoking so appreciate no smoking in bedrooms or indoor kitchen/lounge area.

Even when it rains, the house has tremendously well sheltered verandahs where you can smoke "outside."

YOU ARE THE ONLY GUESTS
No exceptions!
Please do not invite anyone to our home during your stay.
We are offering the River Room as a retreat for our guests only.
There is some lovely alternative accommodation in the Valley without this restriction. Best to book elsewhere if the purpose of your stay is NOT for finding some peace and quiet and sharing the place with ourselves or our trusted house sitters.

No pets sorry!

A beautiful and scenic area, it's hard to go wrong in the lovely area that is Glennifer. What a magical area. We are both accustomed to camping trips so this was pure luxury for us, and the bed and shower were both lovely, indulgent experiences on their own. The actual Tree House was fantastic, clean, spacious. Minimal bugs and mosquitoes. We slept with the door open one night, no concerns, but I can imagine soon it will probably be a bit too chilly for that option. The outdoor kitchen had everything you could possible need and was an awesome place to sit and eat, and chat. Warwick was a very accomodating host, even doing our dishes! He was available at all times without being intrusive, and happily answered any of our queries and gave some local knowledge about town and the surrounds. His ever loyal and obedient dog, Molly, was also very endearing... such a little cutie. Thanks Warwick (and Molly)! Pleasure to meet you and thanks for looking after us.

We had such a relaxing & peaceful stay. The location was purely stunning. Looking over the beautiful rainforest & Never Never river listening to the birds & local wildlife. Complete serenity. Would definitely recommend to anyone wishing to getaway for a restful break. It was an honour to stay in a residence designed by architect Richard Leplastrier.

Would've been a great summer getaway!! We arrived on the rainiest weekend in Bellingen and everything felt cold and wet. Views were lovely but no insulation or heating meant we were very cold and damp by morning.

My partner and I spent three wonderful nights in the River Room and loved every minute of it. It was like our own little piece of paradise. We loved swimming in the creek, and spent our days wandering through the town, attending the weekend markets, venturing out to Dorrigo national park for a beautiful hike through the rainforest, and enjoyed a guided moonlight canoe trip down the river! We can't wait to start planning our return to this beautiful place! Thank you Kirsty and George!

This place is paradise. We spent a magical 5 days here during the heatwave of summer 2017. Our days were spent swimming in the river, lazing in the beautiful gardens and reading in the spectacular River Room. Lynne and Damian were brilliant hosts/house sitters and Kirsty was fabulous in co-ordinating our visit from afar. I feel like I have walked out of a dream and hope we can return one day.

Response from Kirsty:
oh that's lovely to hear Emma. Sounds like you and your children enjoyed your stay as best suits the space -- absorbing your surroundings, not rushing around too much! (Although there's much to do locally). And when there's an Australian heatwave, we laugh about our life leaping from our home office desks into the cold river and out again and back again every time we feel too hot! It definitely gets us through the day. Glad you mentioned Damian and Lyn who are fantastic housesitters when we have to go travel for work. Hope you also achieved some of the local research you wanted to get done. Maybe see you down the track! ciao, kirsty

An amazing and secluded place where you can be immersed in nature and forget about everything in the city if coming from afar! It is a remote place and so is not the same as any hotel you would normally get but this does not mean the place is under equipped. Surprisingly good food in town at Bellingen as well, the couple restaurants we went to (Qudo and The little red kitchen) were both amazing.

Raised our now adult boys here after departing Sydney jobs and continuing our media employment here and on the road.
We have worked hard to regenerate our 13 hectare property and now enjoy a fully established rainforest riparian environment around our house. Your fee for sharing it, helps us maintain and continue this vital regeneration work with our neighbors along the Never Never River and its precious water catchment. We're average housekeepers keen on cooking and of course, cleanliness but not neat freaks! Into atmospherics! We love most music and congregation.
Internationally we have lived in Italy and keep going back to visit friends and extended family. When we do, you'll be hosted by our trusted house sitters (contact them via our landline numb(PHONE NUMBER HIDDEN)).
We've made films about the old Russia and books about Islam, Italy and international politics.
We hosted willing workers' on organic farms here in Gleniffer for many years and our family loved the help and the variety of international guests and expert help. Very happy to answer questions and give you the good word on the places we fondly call home.

We aim to help families trying to keep their accommodation costs down as opposed to providing a fancy B&B service. This is possible by simply sharing our home and environment rather than running a guest house. And we can make suggestions of other accommodation where you might stay locally if you'd prefer to be totally pampered or enjoy a working farm (our favourite is North Farm).
