Spectacular Australian architecture, this riverside room suits a couple or family with option to request via special offer, a second bedroom & bathroom within a treehouse complex where you share kitchen. Lose yourself in 13 hectares of rainforest.
We love our home in the Bellinger Valley.
Our place is located in a quite precious part of the globe called Promised Land.
That means we need to tread lightly on the environment here.
Its subtropical atmospheric ensures green valleys and clean running rivers and waterfalls most of the year and all the native wildlife that secures.
But it won't stay that way forever without the thoughtful efforts of locals and visitors combined. Families living here spend huge amounts of their own time bolstering natural regeneration of this river Valley, keeping weeds at bay and natural vegetation and fauna thriving.. . Most of us walk and cycle and we encourage all visitors to do the same.
Our 3-part tree house was designed by famous Australian architect, Richard LePlastrier. He thoughtfully designed for the local Australian sub-tropical climate with minimalist iron/timber and flywire and built in 1980 by a meticulous Dutchman Henk Mulder. Its architecture is inherent to your experience sleeping, congregating and relaxing here.
Our River Room is a very BIG space with King sized bed and room for young kids on separate single beds, a loft, plenty of desk room, a dining table and armchairs. So it suits couple or family. Originally, it was an artist's studio.
The River Room overlooks a freshwater river just inland from Australia's northern NSW coast in a Valley. It lends a peacefulness to our home which is built within metres of it.
A simple drive away are long, white surf beaches, popular with surfers.
To get here with the much improved Pacific Highway, you'll drive for six hours from Sydney. We're half way along that coastline between Brisbane and Sydney and ten minutes north-east from the rural township of Bellingen on the Waterfall Way which weaves north-west through Dorrigo to Armidale.
Sometimes we rent our entire house on Special Request.
But we primarily rent the detached section of our home called the River Room. YOU are the ONLY guest in the main house (whether alone, as a couple or family group). The River Room has no TV but a music player and good LED reading (a TV is in nearby shared lounge/kitchen, but truly, it's probably not going to be your focus whilst staying here). And we cater in the most basic of ways for tech heads! Having said that, we have all channels plus Austar service, because we are football fans and need to watch the A-League!
We keep your rental price down because we offer no unnecessary frills! There are many terrific and fully-serviced accommodation options nearby but of course, their nightly charges are likely higher.
RENTING THE WHOLE HOUSE
You MAY request renting the entire house at holiday times of the year eg: Easter or Christmas. Ask for a "special offer." You may also rent EXTRA rooms.
At this time, we do not offer the other rooms in the Main House separately on AirBnB. This is to ensure there is only one family/friend group staying. (We have The Hut in a corner of our property where guests stay independent of the main house)
Firstly, book the River Room for 1/2 or up to 4 adults or children. If you additionally need space for more of your family/friends, make a request for a "special offer" and explain to us you would like one of our other sleeping areas (we have 2 of them) to accommodate a larger group or family.
Maximum occupancy for River Room is 2 adults and 2 children. Despite its exceptionally large size, it is NOT suitable for 4 adults.
ENJOYING THE SPACE
Mostly we or a member of our family is home during your stay but you have your own space for sleeping, lots of outdoor spaces and verandahs to enjoy in peace but share our kitchen with us. And we sleep over the far side of our property.
The layout of our treehouse means you can be social with your hosts or keep very much to yourselves!
Along a short walkway is a full bathroom with toilet/shower.
It is alongside our 2nd building which is our shared kitchen and shared lounge area. It includes indoor "the cave" for lazy winter evenings with wood fire and the television set. We use our own Big Pond toggle for internet. If you have a toggle, you can network anywhere in the house via a device in the central kitchen (website hidden): you can take your computer and sit anywhere within house range. Telstra works well but other networks can be tricky. Further advice on any telecommunications from Trevor Tree at 20/20 Imagineering in Bellingen.
Also located in this 2nd building, is an outside and stunning sunroom for chatting or reading with a myriad of daily mountain and sky (and star) views as you lounge on the day beds.
Back in your River Room, you have views over the Never Never River and through rainforest trees.
Walk downstairs and underneath one of the house wings (there are three) is an outdoor BBQ area for summer evening meals and with quasi-kitchen facilities including dishwashing sink and cutlery/plates/cutting boards etc
Nearby you can jump on the gigantic trampoline.
FULLY EQUIPPED KITCHEN
The indoor Kitchen is fully equipped and timeless design with an oldish electric stove with gas tops including a wok gas flame which doubles for slow cooking. The oven currently is out of order but we have a pizza oven downstairs (and other options, read on).
We only have the functional basics including cutlery/plates/glasses (replace any breakages, yep thanks!). Combined with the lounge/indoor eating table, this is a homely/beautiful space to cook because it has several windows looking out onto the rainforest. Both kitchens are shared/negotiated depending on your meal preferences/times.
If you're on a driving holiday, you'll be happy to get some washing done. We have a washing machine, dryer and plenty of hanging space. Bring your laundry powder.
SWIMMING THE NEVER NEVER
Probably our most special feature is that you don't have to go anywhere else to find somewhere to walk or swim. Swimming in summer is literally at your doorstep in clean and deep fresh waterholes of the Never Never River which runs alongside the house. Depending on your toleration of fresh cold water, you can swim Olympic size laps here. No chlorine! There's even a 5 hour hike from our place up to waterfalls off the Dorrigo Plateau, called the Never Never Falls. But please note: this is not a National Park and therefore not a guided walk with pathways. A local family, the Schofields like to be alerted that you intend to walk (in case of accidents) and you can access the start of the hike from their property about 5 minutes drive from our house.
You need to take all that you need for a day trip including small shovel/device for digging holes (there are no toilets) and daypacks so you can bring your rubbish back to ours for disposal.
We are within 30 minutes is Coffs Harbour Airport, with regular connections to major cities via several different airlines including the 2 majors, Virgin and QantasLink.
Sydney to Coffs Harbour is approximately one hour by air.
If you are driving, we are 6 hours north of Sydney, 5 hours south of Brisbane and 3 hours south of Byron Bay which is within 2 hours of Brisbane.
We are located just 10 minutes drive from the increasingly popular and forever funky town of Bellingen, where organic cafés, top quality restaurants, galleries and clothing boutiques bring sophistication to the rural calm.
A further 15 minutes and you reach the coastline, where kilometres of near-deserted beaches can be explored. Surfers love Hungry Head, Third headland, Urunga headland and further south, Valla Beach.
A stay on our property is perfect for travellers looking to get away from the city and experience rainforest, rolling countryside. Respite!
The Tree House is a destination in itself, in a valley that offers enough activity for a prolonged stay. You can canoe, ride a bicycle. Even horseride with the help of nearby Valery Trails.
Sharing our home is a cheaper option for families if keeping down accommodation costs is your priority/preference.
THE SLEEPING AREAS
1) The River Room offers more than simply a bed. It has extensive desk & couch space for writing, painting, reading and quiet time in your own large space. One wall opens up like a garage door and reveals the Never Never River, just metres below.
It is a minimalist style of architecture.
Our priority is to provide really comfortable bedding and simplicity of furnishings rather than clutter.
You'll need to use the gas heater to survive brisk winter mornings and evenings but daytime is usually mild.
In summer, we provide 2 fans to assist your comfort when/if the temperature peaks.
2) "Ned's bedroom" is available by "special offer" if booked with the River (website hidden): if you are 4 adults and need two rooms. The 2nd room is on ground level.
Ned's bedroom includes its own toilet and wardrobe. Being on ground floor, it is suitable for disabled access. We built it for our visiting parents. It has an oil heater for winter use.
This room is situated underneath the kitchen/lounge wing and can be locked. All you have to do to enjoy your Valley surrounds is to walk outside and find a couch or hammock or riverbank pontoon on which to perch.
Or join your friends/family in the very big River Room space.
3) The Office -- our old office has been converted into a simple extra bedroom about 50 metres from the main house and other accommodation. It has a choice of a) a brand new queen bed or b) x2 new singles.
A funky new and nearby bathroom has a hot shower and compost toilet. Photos to come! You can view this room on arrival and choose between it and other options if you are a group requiring 3 separate bedrooms. Or, you can stay here instead of Ned's bedroom, for the same price.
Your car can be parked alongside it. Again, this room is only via "special offer" if booked with the River Room.
Plenty of onsite parking
When we are away (working), our friend and manager Kurly, shows you around but mostly leaves you to your own devices, a phone call away. The neighborhood is a tight community so there's always someone to give you a hand but equally, you can keep to yourself.
MUSIC you can play music loudly 24/7 and never risk disturbing the neighbors!! Conversely, rarely be disturbed by a vehicle or sense of human activity whilst lazing over a good book or napping mid afternoon or waking for early morning yoga on our platform over the River). More likely you will be disturbed by spring bird song!
You should ponder how many days to stay here as once you reach The Promised Land Treehouse you probably won't want just a night or two...that's why we've set 2 day minimum!
You have privacy or you can congregate in our shared kitchen and living areas. The river is yours to enjoy. And our 13 hectare property is also yours to explore. We have excellent Telstra phone reception. And if you bring a Big Pond toggle, we have a wireless router so you can use your computer anywhere in the extended house or garden.
If we're around, we love to chat in our sunroom especially in the evening as the sun sets
Precious natural places are increasingly rare in the world. We are privileged to live in one of those neighborhoods. Our local Town, Bellingen and the nearby Coast and the Dorrigo Plateau are all bonus extensions for you to explore during your visit. The Valley also hosts special musical and cultural events including the River and Jazz Festivals. Our home was commissioned by Booker Prize winning author, Peter Carey who is the Bellingen Book Festival's Patron.
You need a car or a bicycle. (local cycling is as good as it gets if you like a bit of flat, a bit of hill and the odd climb). The local schoolbus sometimes gives visitors a lift to Town, as do neighbors. Equally, if you get to our house, you probably don't need to leave it during your stay, especially if you purchase your food on arrival in Bellingen. Kurly can give you a lift out to ours.

Thank you for a wonderful stay in your truly unique house in the Promised Land . The Never Never River is beautiful as are the views to the Dorrigo ranges through the mist .
Thank you also to Kurly for being so friendly, informative and helpful.
I hope we can stay again and I'm sure Peter Carey would be very pleased that the " renovators did not move in "
Julie and Graeme
We had a wonderful time at the promised land.i would recommend this property to anyone! It was out first time to Bellingen and it didn't disappoint. On top of that, communication with the hosts was simple and easy to arrange a meeting place in town.
Stunning, stunning, stunning.
Deeply relaxing place - you couldn't get any closer to the Never Never river (we heard the catfish splashing from our bed).
The treehouse architecture pulls you into the dense tree canopy allowing you to experience the bush and the changing weather conditions. The space is so interesting and still - we found it hard to leave. Although there is heaps to explore in the area - very well positioned to explore the Never Never.
Kirsty and George are lovely hosts - easy going and very helpful.
This place was a very true and real symbol of the beautiful Bellingen region. The sounds and smells of this natural haven were so reviving, and I will not soon forget the deep, clear waters of Kirsty's private water hole just outside my room!
We have had a great time in the treehouse. It is the located in a wonderful area and completly equiped with everything that you need.
My Kids loved it and i really like to visit the place a second time, Marion
Within minutes of our arrival, my English partner decided he was in no hurry to see the rest of Australia yet, and we extended our stay. From watching the platypus breakfasting in the river every morning, to learning to distinguish the diversity of birdlife living in the trees with us (the cat bird, the Australasian fig bird, the black cockatoos, lewins honeyeater, satin bowerbird, rufous fantail, and kingfisher, among many others), this was a wildlife lovers' paradise. Our days were bookended by the morning chorus of the cicadas and the ghostly view of the forest from our bed in the evening, and everything in between was perfect. Many thanks to kurly for his support on the ground and in the trees (especially with matters reptilian), and to kirsty and family for sharing their home.
The reservation was canceled 31 days before arrival. This is an automated posting.
This property is amazing! Even if it rains you wont be disappointed. I highly recommend staying there. Bellingen is a beautiful town with such lovely people including the hosts!
This is a piece of paradise! We were woken by a bird chorus each morning! The walks are idyllic. The accommoadation was (email hidden)ntemporary unpretentious Australian architecture at its best. We actualy did not stay in the main guest pavillion due to a personal issue for Kirsty. We were offered the studio at a reduced price which was fine for our purposes but not stunning like the main house.
The creek at all times of the day and night dominate the environment and it is the source of life here - for the birds calling at dawn, the goanna slipping past in the quiet of the heat of the day, the frogs and the bats that come out at night, the ducks quietly honking to themselves in the evening, and us too, drinking it like a nectar - the creek casts a kind of spell over the River Room, and the whole blissful house. And in the opposite aspect, the Dorrigo hills sit just a short drive to the west, and are a soothing place to retreat when the day is hot - deep lush rainforest towering Tallowoods, waterfalls and rainforest.
Kirsty and George's home holds many stories I suspect, including of novels and books written in the calm of the timber surrounds. Our family just loved it. To me it's the quintessential Australian home - adventurous in design, but not pretentious, and embedded in its environment. So much weathered timber so the place had a friendly feel, reminiscent of holidays years ago, in the shack on Stradbroke Island - but miraculously, at least in our experience, without the massive spiders! And open to the light and breezes.
The scent of orange blossom and warm lemons drifted across us all day and was completely intoxicating - the fresh juice we indulged in, warm off the tree, felt zinging with vitamins - just glorious. The privacy of the River Room with its entirely opening wall (we slept it seemed, inside the trees), the casual luxury of the daybeds in the net-enclosed, but otherwise open-to-the-world verandah, with the view of the glorious hills, the pleasure of cooking in the rustic kitchen - the yoga verandah/breakfast spot overlooking the creek... just sheer pleasure. I loved the open bathroom - a shower (like a small waterfall) and a loo with views is heaven to me.
We swam (brrrr) in the creek after a jog up the road (so few cars - another attraction!) and paddled the canoe in the waterhole. It felt like an age but was just five nights, we came home with clean lungs and an intention to return. We felt so lucky that Kirsty and George share their home in this way - a heartfelt thank you!
