"Bairro Alto" is known as one of the most attractive and picturesque areas of the Lisbon’s city center. At night, this 17th century colorful district is transformed into the city's vibrant nightlife quarter. The main streets and narrow passageways are bustling with activity of dozens of excellent traditional restaurants, «fado singing houses», cafés, and a multitude of sleek clubs and bars that stay open until late. In recent years, «Bairro Alto» is also an alternative shopping destination, for those looking for trendy design shops, art galleries and bookshops.
Bairro Alto, one of the Lisbon hippest and coolest place.
There are several buses and trams, and subway, 5 minutes away, although one can easily walk to the main points of the city. Two minutes walking is the heart of the glamorous and cosmopolitan city can still be felt in the Chiado, a place where the "new" and "old" live in harmony. Characterized by casual-chic atmosphere, with streets full of shops, fine restaurants, beautiful cobblestone, beautiful churches and timeless cafes, Chiado makes any visitor feel real Lisbon.
Chiado is where Lisbon's history and urbanity meet. This tourist area of the capital begins at the Brasileira café, on Rua Garrett. Opened in 1905. It´s one of Lisbon's postcards. On the side walk café you will find the different urban tribes and a statue of poet Fernando Pessoa, who offers his lap for tourist photos.
Next to it, two churches remind the vanished towers of Santa Catarina Gate. The Church of Loreto, built in 1528 by Italians living in Lisbon, was partially destroyed by the 1755 earthquake, but later rebuilt and one of the places to visit on Chiado. The Church of Encarnação, inaugurated in 1708, was also hit in 1755 and rebuilt later. But Chiado has more than just two churches to see.
Luís de Camões square, which any Lisboner will call Largo Camões, is not just a passing place. Sit on the steps of the poet's monument and enjoy the bustle that Chiado has.
But do not leave Chiado without inquiring about the theatres. São Luiz Municipal Theatre was one of Lisbon's first cinemas. Today it is a municipal theatre with a rich and varied programming. Also glimpse the Teatro Trindade and the S. Carlos Opera House.
This is one of the city´s best shopping areas. You will find international brand shops (Hermès and Hugo Boss, for example) and great Portuguese designers like José António Tenente (Tv. Carmo, 8) StoryTailors (Cç. Do Ferragial, 8) or Atelier Alves/Gonçalves (Tv. Guilherme Cossul, 16).
It is not difficult to come across public figures, mainly artists. There are several art schools in the area, like the Fine Arts Faculty. Even if you are not an expert, venture into the Chiado Museum - National Museum of Contemporary Art (Rua Serpa Pinto, 4) besides well-cared exhibitions, it has a pleasant patio to have lunch or simply sip a coffee. There is also a big offer for meals: Café Royale, New Wok and Kaffee Hause are excellent choices.
To set forth on a discovery of Lisbon, there is no better place to begin: the tram a few steps away, international brand shops at Chiado and the more daring fashions in Bairro Alto, where you also have the trendiest restaurants of Lisbon. Bica neighbourhood, close by, is becoming a night haven for artists and intellectuals. But this does not destroy the calm and charm of Rua das Chagas. For theatre and opera lovers there are three theatre houses at a five minute distance, S. Carlos, S. Luiz and Trindade Theatres.

Lovely clean apartment in a great neighbourhood close to everything you need in Lisbon. Would happily stay here again!
Me and my friend had a great stay at this apartment. Clean and with a smart code system to enter the place. Very safe.
Located right in the middle of the old center with a lot of good restaurants. We recommend the restaurant Pharmacia just two blocks away!
Nice clean apartment in a very vibrant area.noisy area at night but bedroom at back so slept undisturbed.
The employee who checked us in was friendly. She welcomed us and provided us with a map and directions.
The apartment was adequate for the price. It is located in Bairro alto, but not as noisy as most of the neighborhood. It is a good size for a couple, but we had some issues.
The apartment had a strange smell from the humidity. Sheets were too small for the mattress, there was a broken chair and the hall lights were not working. The shower doors do not close well, and water leaks onto the floor.
The day before we departed, the bathroom lights stopped working. We sent a message, but they were unable to repair the lights before we left.
Luckily, we were able to move a lamp from the bedroom to the bathroom.
Overall, it is a good choice for backpackers on a budget, but not for all
The Charming Apartment in the city was perfectly situated in the heart of Lisbon surrounded by numerous restaurants a stunningly unique bars. The apartment is almost identical to the photographs however the furniture is now painted in a more preferable summer white. We were given brilliant information on our arrival, especially the location of the nearest supermarket so we could purchase some essentials, and various events that were happening during our stay including 'Lisbon Stories'.
There was very little noise from the busy streets below due to the various shutters and windows and we consistently has a pleasant nights sleep.
I would recommend this apartment to others in the future it was a beautiful place especially the sun through the windows in the morning and during the evening.
The only thing I would say is there are a few minor maintenance issues for example the shower door needing to be clipped back onto the rails but nothing that would affect our stay!
The apartment was lovely and exactly like the pictures! The neighborhood was lively, safe and with the thick windows quiet at night! The agency that owns these apartments was fantastic! They allowed us to check in early at 11AM and check out late at 3:30pm. They offered their office as a place to store our bags and immediately answered any emails we sent them.
We would recommend this apartment and agency to anyone who wants to stay in Lisbon!
Thanks for a wonderful trip! Obrigada! Muchas Gracias!! Lauren & David
