"Bairro Alto" is known as one of the most attractive and picturesque areas of the Lisbon’s city center. At night, this 17th century colorful district is transformed into the city's vibrant nightlife quarter. The main streets and narrow passageways are bustling with activity of dozens of excellent traditional restaurants, «fado singing houses», cafés, and a multitude of sleek clubs and bars that stay open until late. In recent years, «Bairro Alto» is also an alternative shopping destination, for those looking for trendy design shops, art galleries and bookshops.
Bairro Alto, one of the Lisbon hippest and coolest place.
There are several buses and trams, and subway, 5 minutes away, although one can easily walk to the main points of the city. Two minutes walking is the heart of the glamorous and cosmopolitan city can still be felt in the Chiado, a place where the "new" and "old" live in harmony. Characterized by casual-chic atmosphere, with streets full of shops, fine restaurants, beautiful cobblestone, beautiful churches and timeless cafes, Chiado makes any visitor feel real Lisbon.
Chiado is where Lisbon's history and urbanity meet. This tourist area of the capital begins at the Brasileira café, on Rua Garrett. Opened in 1905. It´s one of Lisbon's postcards. On the side walk café you will find the different urban tribes and a statue of poet Fernando Pessoa, who offers his lap for tourist photos.
Next to it, two churches remind the vanished towers of Santa Catarina Gate. The Church of Loreto, built in 1528 by Italians living in Lisbon, was partially destroyed by the 1755 earthquake, but later rebuilt and one of the places to visit on Chiado. The Church of Encarnação, inaugurated in 1708, was also hit in 1755 and rebuilt later. But Chiado has more than just two churches to see.
Luís de Camões square, which any Lisboner will call Largo Camões, is not just a passing place. Sit on the steps of the poet's monument and enjoy the bustle that Chiado has.
But do not leave Chiado without inquiring about the theatres. São Luiz Municipal Theatre was one of Lisbon's first cinemas. Today it is a municipal theatre with a rich and varied programming. Also glimpse the Teatro Trindade and the S. Carlos Opera House.
This is one of the city´s best shopping areas. You will find international brand shops (Hermès and Hugo Boss, for example) and great Portuguese designers like José António Tenente (Tv. Carmo, 8) StoryTailors (Cç. Do Ferragial, 8) or Atelier Alves/Gonçalves (Tv. Guilherme Cossul, 16).
It is not difficult to come across public figures, mainly artists. There are several art schools in the area, like the Fine Arts Faculty. Even if you are not an expert, venture into the Chiado Museum - National Museum of Contemporary Art (Rua Serpa Pinto, 4) besides well-cared exhibitions, it has a pleasant patio to have lunch or simply sip a coffee. There is also a big offer for meals: Café Royale, New Wok and Kaffee Hause are excellent choices.

The flat was really nice and clean and the staff of the agency very helpful. It is on a very nice neighborhood. One thing worth knowing is that it is on the ground floor and the windows open to the street, so you can't keep the windows open during the night.
It's a lovely place located in the heart of lisbon's romantic area. The apartment is well designed and decorated, and stay fresh even during warm days. We had one bad experience at our first night though, while people above had a party until early morning, and due to the fact that the apartment is not very well isolated from the rest of the building, including main entrance and apartment above.
Nous avons passé un séjour très agréable dans ce studio idéalement situé.
Les hôtes ont été vraiment disponibles et réactifs.
Je recommande, merci.
The studio was airy with high ceilings and cool despite it being summer and having no air con. Great arches and cool concrete floor.
It's located close to loads of bars and restaurants so the area is busy most nights but with the windows shut most noise is blocked out.
Great bathroom with a spacious shower, nice big bed, but very small kitchen.
Highly recommend this apartment particularly for a short stay.
We had a very great stay in this apartment : it was very clean and very well located, right in the middle of the bar area, and 15 minutes walk from the train station going to the beach.
Nobody welcomed us (only a keycode to enter the apartment!) but everyone was very helpful and very reactive to our questions!
Note that this accommodation is on the ground floor, so you wouldn’t open your window (as the street outside would see you in the apartment) and it was a bit difficult to ventilate the apartment.
However, I definitely recommend this accomodation, especially for friends looking for Lisboa nightlife!!
Spacious, clean, airy apartament.
We had a problem with the hot water and the shower however they solved fast. Great service! I recommend : )
This Apartment is in a great location, at the top of the Barrio Alto. The apartment was spacious, with a great shower, and a washer and washing machine. The noise was a problem at night, as it is on the ground level and there is a lot of foot traffic next to the window. Overall, I would stay again, but be sure to bring earplugs.
