"Bairro Alto" is known as one of the most attractive and picturesque areas of the Lisbon’s city center. At night, this 17th century colorful district is transformed into the city's vibrant nightlife quarter. The main streets and narrow passageways are bustling with activity of dozens of excellent traditional restaurants, «fado singing houses», cafés, and a multitude of sleek clubs and bars that stay open until late. In recent years, «Bairro Alto» is also an alternative shopping destination, for those looking for trendy design shops, art galleries and bookshops.
Bairro Alto, one of the Lisbon hippest and coolest place.
There are several buses and trams, and subway, 5 minutes away, although one can easily walk to the main points of the city. Two minutes walking is the heart of the glamorous and cosmopolitan city can still be felt in the Chiado, a place where the "new" and "old" live in harmony. Characterized by casual-chic atmosphere, with streets full of shops, fine restaurants, beautiful cobblestone, beautiful churches and timeless cafes, Chiado makes any visitor feel real Lisbon.
Chiado is where Lisbon's history and urbanity meet. This tourist area of the capital begins at the Brasileira café, on Rua Garrett. Opened in 1905. It´s one of Lisbon's postcards. On the side walk café you will find the different urban tribes and a statue of poet Fernando Pessoa, who offers his lap for tourist photos.
Next to it, two churches remind the vanished towers of Santa Catarina Gate. The Church of Loreto, built in 1528 by Italians living in Lisbon, was partially destroyed by the 1755 earthquake, but later rebuilt and one of the places to visit on Chiado. The Church of Encarnação, inaugurated in 1708, was also hit in 1755 and rebuilt later. But Chiado has more than just two churches to (website hidden)ís de Camões square, which any Lisboner will call Largo Camões, is not just a passing place. Sit on the steps of the poet's monument and enjoy the bustle that Chiado has.
But do not leave Chiado without inquiring about the theatres. São Luiz Municipal Theatre was one of Lisbon's first cinemas. Today it is a municipal theatre with a rich and varied programming. Also glimpse the Teatro Trindade and the S. Carlos Opera House.
This is one of the city´s best shopping areas. You will find international brand shops (Hermès and Hugo Boss, for example) and great Portuguese designers like José António Tenente (Tv. Carmo, 8) StoryTailors (Cç. Do Ferragial, 8) or Atelier Alves/Gonçalves (Tv. Guilherme Cossul, 16).
It is not difficult to come across public figures, mainly artists. There are several art schools in the area, like the Fine Arts Faculty. Even if you are not an expert, venture into the Chiado Museum - National Museum of Contemporary Art (Rua Serpa Pinto, 4) besides well-cared exhibitions, it has a pleasant patio to have lunch or simply sip a coffee. There is also a big offer for meals: Café Royale, New Wok and Kaffee Hause are excellent choices.
We had a wonderful stay at this cozy apartment in Bairro Alto! We were met by Sara who was friendly, helpful and welcoming. She helped us with ideas for places to visit in Lisbon and even called us a cab to the airport at the end of our stay. We would definitely stay here again.
What a great studio apartment in the heart of Lisbon!
There really isn't a better place to stay if your looking for an AirBnB
There are some of the best restaurants I have eaten just a stones throw away from the door of the apartment.
The apartment itself has all the amenities that a travel needs.
The host was great too! Told me and my girlfriend everything we needed to know about going out in Lisbon and took the time to make recommendations and drew them on a provided map.
Also all of the recommendations were spot on PERFECT.
Just a couple of important things to be aware of.
If you are staying with your significant other be aware that the bathroom is right next to the bedroom and there is not privacy when it comes to sound.
Also the draw back is that the Bario Alto is a very busy place into the early hours of the morning. Expect there to be noise, however if you close the windows you will be fine.... better yet go out and join them
A nice apartment centrally located. All the requirements that you need. This is not a place for relaxation, especially at the weekend as it it is right at the heart of the lively bar area of Lisbon, but if it is a fun lively time, then it is perfect. They are very helpful, clean and a beautiful city.
The place was really nice and really well located. Indeed it's a bit nosy but it is pretty clear when you book the flat and really not that horrible. We had a wonderful time in Lisbon.
It's a great located apartment in middle of Barrio Alto. You will find hundred of restaurants and bars around. Thousands of people are on the street during the night which provide great experience from the night Lisbon. It comes with only disadvantage of this flat: during the night (means from Wed to Sat) it's very noisy. But still awesome!! You will love it!
We had a great stay in Lisbon. The apartment looks just like the photo's and is in a great area full of bars and restaurants. We would love to stay here again.
This was a great location in Lisbon. The food and night life of Barrio Alto is just on your doorstep. If you like eating early and going to bed early then I would recommend a different area, Barrio Alto never sleeps. There is good Fado around and hundreds of restaurants. The apartment is nice and spacious as described and the owners easy to communicate with and very helpful, they arranged a cab for our early morning departure which was great.
The studio is located very centrally and the party locations are very close. Unfortunately that is also why on fridays and saturdays the studio is very noisy, so don't forget the "Oropax"!!!
Margarida was a pleasure to correspond with! She provided a very helpful guide to Lisbon prior to arrival and explained how to get around town. The apartment is in a great location and not loud at night. Fresh towels, ironing board, full kitchen and free wifi were also a plus. Thanks again Margarida!
