The Ando room is our homage to Momofuku Ando, Taiwanese-Japanese inventor of instant ramen noodles and Cup Noodles and founder of Nissin Foods. Ando’s instant ramen noodles and Cup Noodles have had global impact, powering graduate students working on world class scientific research, fueling countless entrepreneurs and startups, feeding disaster refugees and providing hot sustenance for people of modest means. His product reflected pure simplicity, ease of use and universal appeal - just peel back the lid, add hot water and wait three minutes.

In 1957 at age 47, after many previous business setbacks and failures, Ando reached a low point in this life, having headed a bank that made many bad loans. Depositors pursued him to make up for their losses, and he thought he might die of shame or poverty. In the depth of that failure, he recalled a long line of people he had seen waiting in the cold for ramen noodles 10 years earlier and set to work. Reflecting on his previous failed ventures: “I came to understand that all of my failure—all of my shame - was like muscle added to body.” He spent over a year intensely experimenting to perfect instant ramen noodles, only to meet with repeated failure. His moment of serendipitous discovery came while watching his wife fry tempura in boiling oil. Dipping his noodles into the oil, he saw they not only dried, but became highly absorbent.

Ando is a reminder that failure can be a great teacher, and that it’s never too late to observe, learn, experiment and invent, and to recreate yourself in the process. He was not afraid to try and fail and try again and again, even in a culture that views failure with great shame. In 1971, at age 61, he launched Cup Noodles, his first international megahit, a revolutionary new packaging design for his instant ramen, after watching Americans in Los Angeles eating the noodles in Styrofoam coffee cups instead of bowls. As of 2009, Ando’s company employed more than 21,000 people in 11 countries and enjoyed net sales of over $3 billion a year.

The perfect spot for visiting professionals, researchers, entrepreneurs, engineers, scholars, students, conference attendees and Stanford parents- anyone who enjoys a private room with plenty of space to stretch out and work, beautiful neighborhood walks, and easy car-free access to Stanford Campus. Convenient travel to surrounding areas in Mountain View, Menlo Park, Sunnyvale, Redwood City and Santa Clara, as well as San Francisco, San Jose, Santa Cruz and Oakland/Berkeley.

You’ll have a private room with a very comfortable, cushioned, high quality full-size 8 in. thick orthopedic futon which converts into an ottoman for reading or working with your feet up (it’s super comfortable and nothing like a typical hard futon, and amazingly there are listings at this price for uncomfortable narrow couches, bunk beds and rock-hard futons in the middle of crowded busy living rooms).

Comfortable bathrobe and plush towels for your convenience.

  • I've stayed for three weeks at Leigh's place and had a great time! Leigh took me along for a short hike the first day I arrived. The house is set in a wonderful area convenient to campus and downtown. Definitely a recommended place to stay!

  • I spent a great time in Leigh house. Leigh has been very helpful, at any time, to make my stay and life easier. Interactions with hosts and airbnbers were really nice and easy but never intrusive. It is very easy to walk to California Avenue Caltrain station, restaurants and stores or to bike to Stanford (15 minutes of slow biking to the school of medicine).

  • The listed room was everything I expected. The house and the neighborhood was silent and close to University avenue.
Leigh is an excellent host and she has been hosting airbnb guests for a long time.

  • I stay with Leigh and EJ for two nights while visiting my brother at Stanford - it was my first airbnb experience and it was great! They were so sweet and welcoming! I would recommend this to anyone and I would definitely stay here again!

  • I had a wonderful stay at Leigh's spacious home in Palo Alto. I actually just needed a room for the night, as I was waiting to move into a new apartment, and Leigh was able to be at home to greet me as soon as I got into town. She was a very gracious host, who took time to go over everything the house, the neighboring area, and a few other things with me. Moreover, the room was extremely neat and tidy and had all of the amenities I was looking for. I would certainly recommend Leigh to anyone needing a place in Palo Alto - she is a terrific host!

  • xperience was exceptional with the hosts. They made all necessary connections / directions super simple, ensured i had great options locally, gave advice and support on all manner of things, and even took the trouble to invite me on a lovely nature walk with them. Couldn't speak more highly of their commitment to being outstanding bnb hosts. Location ideal for each of California Av (markets on a Sunday are top shelf); walking into Stanford Uni; and walking to the heart of Palo Alto eating and shopping district. That's not to mention an even shorter stroll to the train station to connect both north and south. If you're after accommodation for Stanford or Silicon Valley generally, then simply look no further!

  • Fantastic! Leigh was extremely hospitable, helpful, and kind. The place was also wonderful - comfortable, clean, spacious, everything you could ask for!

    March 2014
  • I stayed with Leigh and EJ for three weeks while I was working in my Lab at Stanford, and I really enjoyed it!! There house is in a nice neighborhood, very central and close to Stanford. I could go everywhere by bike (that I could also rent from them). Leigh and EJ were very friendly, provided me with really good information and did do everything possible to make my stay perfect. In this way I could focus on my research during this stay. Next time in Palo Alto, I will definitely go back to their place!

  • I stayed with Leigh and EJ for over a month and they were awesome! Being away from home was not that hard thanks to them. I met very interesting and nice people that were also staying at the house and we had great conversations. Some nights after work I would cook a quick dinner and Leigh and EJ were there to keep me company and even to share some warm soup or a hot cup of tea ;)
Some other random day they would invite me to come with them for a nice hike or concert/event around the area. They made me feel like home when away from home! They trully went above and beyond.
I stayed in two different rooms and they were both very clean and comfortable. I did not have a car but that was not an issue since the Caltrain station is only a few blocks away and there are restaurants and shops at walking distance.
Thanks Leigh and EJ for being the best hosts ever. I hope I get to see you again ;)

  • Leigh & EJ were wonderful hosts immediately offering a lot of insightful information on restaurants, getting around Palo Alto and Stanford, as well as taking advantage of things to do in the area. They were very accommodating and when I asked whether they had a mirror for the room, they went out and bought one for me. Leigh & EJ are also really engaging to talk to, and generous with their connections!

Their place was the perfect location to walk to most of my Palo Alto meetings and the Caltrain is a 10 minute walk making other areas like Mountain View, Menlo Park and SF very accessible. Their place is clean, and the stay was very well-organised. i would definitely stay here again!
