ABOUT THE ANDO PRIVATE ROOM
The Ando room is our homage to Momofuku Ando, Taiwanese-Japanese inventor of instant ramen noodles and Cup Noodles and founder of Nissin Foods. Ando’s instant ramen noodles and Cup Noodles have had global impact, powering graduate students working on world class scientific research, fueling countless entrepreneurs and startups, feeding disaster refugees and providing hot sustenance for people of modest means. His product reflected pure simplicity, ease of use and universal appeal - just peel back the lid, add hot water and wait three minutes.
In 1957 at age 47, after many previous business setbacks and failures, Ando reached a low point in this life, having headed a bank that made many bad loans. Depositors pursued him to make up for their losses, and he thought he might die of shame or poverty. In the depth of that failure, he recalled a long line of people he had seen waiting in the cold for ramen noodles 10 years earlier and set to work. Reflecting on his previous failed ventures: “I came to understand that all of my failure—all of my shame - was like muscle added to body.” He spent over a year intensely experimenting to perfect instant ramen noodles, only to meet with repeated failure. His moment of serendipitous discovery came while watching his wife fry tempura in boiling oil. Dipping his noodles into the oil, he saw they not only dried, but became highly absorbent.
Ando is a reminder that failure can be a great teacher, and that it’s never too late to observe, learn, experiment and invent, and to recreate yourself in the process. He was not afraid to try and fail and try again and again, even in a culture that views failure with great shame. In 1971, at age 61, he launched Cup Noodles, his first international megahit, a revolutionary new packaging design for his instant ramen, after watching Americans in Los Angeles eating the noodles in Styrofoam coffee cups instead of bowls. As of 2009, Ando’s company employed more than 21,000 people in 11 countries and enjoyed net sales of over $3 billion a year.
CONVENIENT, COMFORTABLE PRIVATE ROOM

Leigh & EJ were wonderful hosts immediately offering a lot of insightful information on restaurants, getting around Palo Alto and Stanford, as well as taking advantage of things to do in the area. They were very accommodating and when I asked whether they had a mirror for the room, they went out and bought one for me. Leigh & EJ are also really engaging to talk to, and generous with their connections!
Their place was the perfect location to walk to most of my Palo Alto meetings and the Caltrain is a 10 minute walk making other areas like Mountain View, Menlo Park and SF very accessible. Their place is clean, and the stay was very well-organised. i would definitely stay here again!
Leigh was an excellent host, definitely recommend to others!
Leigh was an excellent host, definitely recommend to others!
Trust me on that one: you will not want to leave this place. Leigh and EJ are incredibly friendly, resourceful and fun hosts and one of the nicest people you will meet.
They set new standards for AirBnB's "SuperHost" rating. This is the "UltraSuperCoolHost".
This was my first AirBnB experience and it was great! The hosts made the experience so much more than renting a room. Their generosity with information, tips on things like spaces close by to work, hikes and parks... reflects the warm and interesting people they are. The set up of the house is roomy even when fully occupied and the bed comfy, room and location of address very convenient as described. I would definitely stay again and hope to keep in touch with my new Palo Alto friends!
A great place to stay. The house is lovely and well-located. Hosts were very nice and gave plenty of good advice on the area. No complaints or suggestions for improvement.
Great stay. Would highly recommend to anyone!
It was an amazing experience staying at Leigh and EJ' house. They help and give me as many as indications they can to introduce me to this new city. It was great also the position near Caltrain and the campus.
I stayed with Leigh and EJ for three weeks during my research-related visit to Silicon Valley and I had a great time. Leigh and EJ are wonderful hosts and the room was really comfortable. I didn't have a car - not the best idea in Silicon Valley - but their place is really conveniently located near a Caltrain station and a Marguerite stop so it was hardly ever a problem. Also, the neighbourhood they live in is beautiful.
Furthermore, Leigh and EJ are incredibly hospitable and helpful. Being in a new place, I appreciated their tips, advice and just how efficient they are with everything. They seem to know everything that is happening around Palo Alto and Stanford and always had great suggestions. They also make an effort to get to know their guests' interests and make the experience as nice as possible for all the visitors. Furthermore, they are both fascinating individuals and I cannot express enough how much I enjoyed all our conversations.
Thank you so much for this wonderful experience!
Leigh and her husband were great! And when else could you stay in a neighborhood packed with Silicon Valley luminaries?
