The Space

Hello and thank you for taking the time to view our listing.
Tommy’s Place is a private and tranquil haven built in sympathy with the native bush land. The house is on an elevated, north facing section with a sea view. Here, you get the peacefulness and tranquility of the surrounding native bush land yet the hub of Paihia is a short 10 minute stroll away. The accommodation area at Tommy’s is approximately 130 square metres. It is like an apartment but, with a kitchenette instead of a full kitchen. The layout consists of 2 bedrooms. One room has a queen size bed, the other a double. The bathroom, toilet, lounge, dining area and kitchenette are all separate to the bedrooms. Our aim is to provide our guests with a comfortable, relaxing place to be whilst travelling. The décor is an easy, eclectic collection of different styles. We can comfortably accommodate a group of 4.

We look forward to being your hosts whilst you are visiting the Bay of Islands, New Zealand.
Steve & Sue Thompson (and our 13yr old Lhasa Apso, Jack)

Interaction with Guests

This is our home and we live in the upstairs area. We always greet and farewell our guests. Our accommodation area is very spacious & private - we tell our guests "this is your space while you are here", and we respect our guests privacy.

The Neighborhood

When we first came to view the section our property is built on, we loved the feeling of peacefulness and privacy. the birdlife and that we got that feeling of being away from it all yet, close to the township. For our guests, Tommy's Place is a great place to unwind after a busy day sightseeing.

Getting around

The wharf, Maritime Building, visitor information centre and township of Paihia are all within a 10 minute walk from Tommy's Place. There are taxis and 1 tuk tuk should you need to use them.

For all guests using their own vehicles, we have free, private, off street parking.

Paihia is approximately a 3 hour drive north of the Auckland Harbour Bridge. It is an easy, scenic drive with many places to stop and rest. From the Auckland Harbour Bridge, follow S.H.1 to Kawakawa. At Kawakawa, take S.H.11 - it is all sign posted. For those who do not wish to use the Northern Gateway Toll road, there are signs showing the alternative route through Orewa and Waiwera.

Overall Guest Satisfaction

  • Had a lovely time with Sue, Steve and Jack!
The apartment is clean, spacious and very homely. Sue provided us with some gorgeous homemade jams which we absolutely loved!
The bedrooms were spacious with plenty of wardrobe room and the dressing-gowns were a big plus.
The drive up to the house is a little steep, but well worth it.
The views from the living room is gorgeous lush bush and our only regret was that we didn't stay longer.
It was a great base from which to explore Piahia and we definitely recommend staying here.

Hi Sophie and Jacqui, thanks for the lovely review. I didn't say much on your review but rest assured, we really enjoyed having you stay with us even though it was short. Hope you had a good trip to Rotorua and are enjoying the rest of your NZ experience. Stay in touch.

  • Very large and roomy space in a lovely tranquil setting with a big verandah and water views. Extremely clean - Sue cleaned daily and topped up our breakfast supplies while we were out. She even left special homemade treats for us to find on our return which was a lovely homey touch - something you don't get at a hotel! Her home-made yoghurt is delicious! Convenient location and a guest book full of recommendations of what to do in the area. We really enjoyed our afternoon at the Kawiti glow worm caves ($16) and Ngawha Springs geothermal pools ($4) - very affordable afternoon out :) Dinner at 35 degrees south was also a highlight. One day we joined a yacht called 'She's a lady' which was with a smaller group and the skipper allowed everyone to get involved with the sailing.

We had a great three night stay and would definitively recommend Tommy's Place to other travelers.

  • Spending beautiful 10 nights and 11 days at Sue ß Steve´s was definitely a high of our two months trip across NZ...They are one superb couple and JACK is the dude of all dogs :o) He did not mind our 2 year old pulling his tail:o) Tommy´s place is spacious, well layed out, perfect for a family! Its very quiet, private and very very clean, the views from a deck are spectacular, its close to the hub of Paihia, Russel, beautiful beaches and many many more attractions. Sue is a wonderful host. Every day we returned "home" to a tidy place, fresh laundry, made up beds and home made nibbles (loved her brownies and pickles!!!!). When in this neck of the woods go Tommy´s place. Its top notch!:o)

Hi Petra, Cam, Sophie & Sam, we certainly enjoyed having you guys stay with us. It was with sadness we wiped away the little hand prints - I had forgotten how special they are :) I think Jack is missing Sam - hah! Thanks for the great review. Ka kite te anu

  • We really enjoyed our stay at Sue's house. It was kind of like having our own hotel suite! Nicely appointed bedroom, very clean and beautiful bathroom, and separate lounge area with couches, tv and dining table, with doors out to a deck overlooking the bush and ocean in the distance. Her house is up a steep driveway in the trees, yet just under 10 minute walk into town. Sue and her husband (and doggie) were very friendly and helpful with local tips etc. If your travels take you to Paihia, this is a wonderful place to stay!

  • We had a wonderful experience at Tommy's Place. Sue (and Jack-the-dog) welcomed us with friendly warmth, home-made jams and yoghurt, and fresh fruit and bread.

Sue and Steve were the perfect hosts, unobtrusive and respectful of our privacy, but always available with invaluable advice about the area, where to go, and what to see and where to eat. The two-bedroom guest suite is completely self-contained, scrupulously clean and well-equipped, and just perfect for relaxing after a busy day sightseeing and exploring the area.

It is an easy walk down to the town and beachfront, and a relatively easy walk back up - and that last 100 metres of driveway makes up for the restaurant desert you knew you shouldn't have eaten!

Sue and Steve's previous experience in the hospitality industry really shows in their attention to detail and attitude to their guests. Very highly recommended - we will certainly ask to stay again should we return to Paihia.

  • What a wonderful place to stay. We felt like we were in a treehouse and had beautiful views of the water from a distance. We wouldn't hesitate staying there again. The privacy of having our own apartment of sorts is fabulous.

  • Tommy's Place is the perfect place to be when visiting Paihia. It's just a 10min walk from the harbour, lovely house 2min uphill with a nice seaview. The separate flat is spotless with a great terrace, lounge area with kitchenette. Sue and Steve are great hosts and also their sweet dog Jack is very friendly! If I go back to Paihia, this is the place to be!!

Hi there. We are Steve & Sue. We moved to Paihia from Auckland in 1996. When we first came to Paihia, we owned & ran a successful backpacker's lodge we called "Tommys Backpackers Lodge". After 6 very busy years, we sold & moved onto other things. Now we have come full circle & opened up our home for travellers to enjoy. We have travelled ourselves & enjoy sharing travel stories & learning of new places to visit. Our dream is to buy a mobile home & travel the length & breadth of NZ 1st, then become 'grey nomads' overseas. Steve works outside the home; Sue runs the B&B.
