Hello and thank you for taking the time to view our listing.
Tommy’s Place is a private and tranquil haven built in sympathy with the native bush land. The house is on an elevated, north facing section with a sea view. Here, you get the peacefulness and tranquility of the surrounding native bush land yet the hub of Paihia is a short 10 minute stroll away. The accommodation area at Tommy’s is approximately 130 square metres. It is like an apartment but, with a kitchenette instead of a full kitchen. The layout consists of 2 bedrooms. One room has a queen size bed, the other a double. The bathroom, toilet, lounge, dining area and kitchenette are all separate to the bedrooms. Our aim is to provide our guests with a comfortable, relaxing place to be whilst travelling. The décor is an easy, eclectic collection of different styles. We can comfortably accommodate a group of 4.
We look forward to being your hosts whilst you are visiting the Bay of Islands, New Zealand.
Steve & Sue Thompson (and our 14yr old Lhasa Apso, Jack)

Interaction with Guests
This is our home and we live in the upstairs area. We always greet and farewell our guests. Our accommodation area is very spacious & private - we tell our guests "this is your space while you are here", and we respect our guests privacy.
When we first came to view the section our property is built on, we loved the feeling of peacefulness and privacy. the birdlife and that we got that feeling of being away from it all yet, close to the township. For our guests, Tommy's Place is a great place to unwind after a busy day sightseeing.
The wharf, Maritime Building, visitor information centre and township of Paihia are all within a 10 minute walk from Tommy's Place. There are taxis and 1 tuk tuk should you need to use them.
For all guests using their own vehicles, we have free, private, off street parking.
Paihia is approximately a 3 hour drive north of the Auckland Harbour Bridge. It is an easy, scenic drive with many places to stop and rest. From the Auckland Harbour Bridge, follow S.H.1 to Kawakawa. At Kawakawa, take S.H.11 - it is all sign posted. For those who do not wish to use the Northern Gateway Toll road, there are signs showing the alternative route through Orewa and Waiwera.

They met us when we arrived and had left a gift basket of edible treats. A home - baked dessert was provided offered for after our meal
They were very helpful with directions and made us feel welcome.
Place was cozy with a great view, sue was very welcoming, she provided us with some nibbles along with the best homemade jam.
Sue was just the BEST host ever !!!!
She welcomed us with a big heart and a lot of kindness. Moreover she shared a lot of tips and was very reliable ...! Thank again for all your precious help! As my mum said: "you both are more than welcome to visit in Morocco"!
Great location, friendly host, would definitely recommend to others who are heading to Paihia.
Sue welcomed us at the front door. She was very friendly and explained everything about the apartment we needed to know. Tommy's place was very close to town, but up in the hills so you have a view and it' very quiet. The apartment is very private and has everything you need. We really enjoyed our stay and highly recommend staying here if you have a chance. Thanks Sue!!!
Our hosts gave us a typical friendly NZ welcome and also provided us with some provisions to get us started.
The property is in the bush but only a 5-10 minute walk from the centre of town.
The accommodation was first class with two bedrooms and a large lounge dining area. There was also an area outside for taking in the view over the trees to the harbour.
The two of us had a great peaceful stay.
Sue and Steve were the perfect hosts - they responded quickly to our first enquiries, checked we were not lost when we were a little late arriving, and had a lovely fruit and goodies platter for us on arrival. Their attention to detail was amazing - there was nothing we could have needed that they had not thought of. The place is lovely, large, clean and comfortable - we both had the best sleeps for ages! It was the perfect base for our Bay of Islands adventure - we would definitely recommend it. Thanks Sue, Steve (and Jack the dog!)
About the Host, Sue
Hi there. We are Steve & Sue. We moved to Paihia from Auckland in 1996. When we first came to Paihia, we owned & ran a successful backpacker's lodge we called "Tommys Backpackers Lodge". After 6 very busy years, we sold & moved onto other things. Now we have come full circle & opened up our home for travellers to enjoy. We have travelled ourselves & enjoy sharing travel stories & learning of new places to visit. Our dream is to buy a mobile home & travel the length & breadth of NZ 1st, then become 'grey nomads' overseas. Steve works outside the home; Sue runs the apartment.
