Hello and thank you for taking the time to view our listing.
Tommy’s Place is a private and tranquil haven built in sympathy with the native bush land. The house is on an elevated, north facing section with a sea view. The township of Paihia where there are shops, restaurants, the I-site (information centre), churhes and tour operators, is just a short 5 – 10 minute walk away.
The accommodation area at Tommy’s is approximately 133 square metres. It is like an apartment but, with a kitchenette instead of a full kitchen. The layout consists of 2 bedrooms. One room has a queen size bed, the other a double. The bathroom, toilet, lounge, dining area and kitchenette are all separate to the bedrooms. Our aim is to provide our guests with a comfortable, relaxing place to be whilst travelling. The décor is an easy, eclectic collection of different styles.
A continental breakfast of fresh fruit, cereal, toast, yoghurt, juice, jams, etc, is placed in the kitchenette ready for you to have at your leisure. We make our own jams and yoghurt. We also cater for guests who have special dietary needs such as gluten and diary free products. Tea and coffee: Dilmah English Breakfast, Green Tea, Peppermint Tea and Chamomile Tea bags and One Premium Coffee certified ‘Fairtrade’ sachets, are provided in the kitchenette and are there for you to have at your leisure. These are topped up daily.
Paihia is the main tourist town in the beautiful Bay of Islands. It is a popular destination for fishing and sailing enthusiasts throughout the year. Besides the water activities, there are many non-water related activities like, walking tracks. The entrance to the popular Paihia Lookout walking track, lies adjacent to the entrance of Tommy’s Place.
Public Transport: There are taxis and 1 tuk tuk!
Opposite Paihia, on the other side of the Bay, is the historic town of Russell. Russell has a charm all of its own. It is a short but very relaxing ferry ride away.
The Waitangi Treaty Grounds (where the Treaty of Waitangi was signed) is a 20 to 30 minute walk from Tommy’s Place or, 5 minutes by car.
A 20 minute drive further north is the larger township of Kerikeri where there are 2 large supermarkets, more shops, the Cathay Cinema & the historic Kerikeri Basin.
Paihia is a 3 hour drive north of Auckland. It does not take long to get out of the city and into the beautiful New Zealand countryside. There are many interesting places to stop off, stretch your legs, have a wander around and break up your journey.
We moved to Paihia from Auckland in 1996 when we bought and converted an older, two storey house into a backpacker’s lodge. We called it ‘TOMMY’S BACKPACKERS LODGE’. After 6 very busy but, fun years, we sold the lodge and moved on to other things. Now we have come full circle, opening up our home as a bed and breakfast accommodation and called it, Tommy’s Place Paihia.

Spending beautiful 10 nights and 11 days at Sue ß Steve´s was definitely a high of our two months trip across NZ...They are one superb couple and JACK is the dude of all dogs :o) He did not mind our 2 year old pulling his tail:o) Tommy´s place is spacious, well layed out, perfect for a family! Its very quiet, private and very very clean, the views from a deck are spectacular, its close to the hub of Paihia, Russel, beautiful beaches and many many more attractions. Sue is a wonderful host. Every day we returned "home" to a tidy place, fresh laundry, made up beds and home made nibbles (loved her brownies and pickles!!!!). When in this neck of the woods go Tommy´s place. Its top notch!:o)
We had a wonderful experience at Tommy's Place. Sue (and Jack-the-dog) welcomed us with friendly warmth, home-made jams and yoghurt, and fresh fruit and bread.
Sue and Steve were the perfect hosts, unobtrusive and respectful of our privacy, but always available with invaluable advice about the area, where to go, and what to see and where to eat. The two-bedroom guest suite is completely self-contained, scrupulously clean and well-equipped, and just perfect for relaxing after a busy day sightseeing and exploring the area.
It is an easy walk down to the town and beachfront, and a relatively easy walk back up - and that last 100 metres of driveway makes up for the restaurant desert you knew you shouldn't have eaten!
Sue and Steve's previous experience in the hospitality industry really shows in their attention to detail and attitude to their guests. Very highly recommended - we will certainly ask to stay again should we return to Paihia.
Great hosts. Excellent private accommodation, clean, quiet. Would recommend to anybody and would stay again.
What a wonderful place to stay. We felt like we were in a treehouse and had beautiful views of the water from a distance. We wouldn't hesitate staying there again. The privacy of having our own apartment of sorts is fabulous.
Thank you so much Sue for adding to our Northland experience.....!
So much attention to detail, clean accommodation, serviced everyday, dietary requirements met, enjoyable and interesting chats and most of all Sue even turned on the weather for us!!!!!! What a marvel this woman is ! :)
Tommy's Place is the perfect place to be when visiting Paihia. It's just a 10min walk from the harbour, lovely house 2min uphill with a nice seaview. The separate flat is spotless with a great terrace, lounge area with kitchenette. Sue and Steve are great hosts and also their sweet dog Jack is very friendly! If I go back to Paihia, this is the place to be!!
Wow! What a great place. We had the whole downstairs to ourselves. Views of the islands from the balcony, sparklingly clean throughout.
Sue and Steve gave us really good information regarding tours and sights. The bay of islands are a must see.
We had a wonderful 3 nights stay in Paihia and enjoyed every minute of it. Sue and Steve are great hosts and their home is just wonderful. The place is just perfect to explore Northland or just enjoy lovely Bay of Islands. The highlight of our time in Northland were our trips to Waipu Cave and Maitai Bay. Would love to come and stay again. :)
(As a sports and movie fan from a country with a pretty poor TV program, I also enjoyed having access to sky tv. :D)
We wish you all the best and hope that Sue already recovered.
My family and I were warmly greeted by Sue, Steve and their doggie Jack.
This set the tone for the rest of our stay which was fabulous.
The accommodation provided is modern, comfortable and immaculately clean. The food and snacks provided tasty and welcome.
Sue is very easy going and her attention to detail faultless. This included helping us out with a garment alteration !
In a nutshell, 'first class' experience.
Sue thanks so much for sharing your lovely home.We certainly would love to return one day.
We really enjoyed our stay at Sue's house. It was kind of like having our own hotel suite! Nicely appointed bedroom, very clean and beautiful bathroom, and separate lounge area with couches, tv and dining table, with doors out to a deck overlooking the bush and ocean in the distance. Her house is up a steep driveway in the trees, yet just under 10 minute walk into town. Sue and her husband (and doggie) were very friendly and helpful with local tips etc. If your travels take you to Paihia, this is a wonderful place to stay!
