Lovely large furnished room in Paquis, extremely well located, set up as your 'home away from home', more comfortable than a hotel but with all the amenities. Close to public transport, very central to train station, UN buildings, and meeting venues.

The Space

Ideal for short/medium term work travellers, consultants, those coming to Geneva for conferences, and those newly arriving to Geneva looking for somewhere to land while they find their feet.

The room contains a double bed, bedside tables and storage space, drawers and dresser unit, large double wardrobe, all usual furnishings including lamps, hangers, etc. Very tastefully furnished. The room is very quiet and peaceful.

All linens (sheets, duvet, pillows, towels) are included. The apartment is in the quiet end of the Paquis (central-most quartier between main train station and lake), close to the Botanic Gardens and the Lake Leman, and just around the corner from a tram stop on the number 15 main tram line. So it is very central to the railway station, the United Nations (UN) Palais des Nations, and Palais Wilson, shops, restaurants and the lively heart of Geneva. It is on the top floor of the building (with an escalator!) and has spectacular views of the Lake and Mont Blanc.

The apartment is spacious and well kept, with a large eat-in kitchen, lounge/dining, 2.5 bathrooms (shower room, bathroom with bath and toilet, and separate toilet), and two other bedrooms.

The apartment has wifi throughout, a washing machine and dryer in the bathroom (no need to leave the apartment to do washing!), dishwasher, Nespresso coffee machine, all usual kitchen appliances plus more, large screen TV. A cleaner comes regularly, and the cost of this is included. All usual expenses, including electricity, wifi, cable TV, cleaning, are included in the cost of accommodation.

All you need to do is bring is your clothes and personal toiletries, purchase your own groceries, and pay for your own phone calls!

Your host in a native English speaker who has lived in Geneva for a decade, and knows and loves the city, and (email hidden) for newcomers and visitors. All the maps, guidebooks, instructions, hints and advice you will ever need can be provided with a smile and some insiders suggestions on the best ways to do it in such a way as to ensure the best service or most affordable option ;)

The apartment is non smoking and no pets, sorry.

Two other furnished rooms in the same apartment are also available, you can have a look at my other listings on Airbnb for more information.

Guest Access

Guests have access to a shared shower room, shared full bathroom (with full size bath tub, shower over bath, toilet, washing machine/dryer), separate toilet, kitchen and kitchen appliances, space in fridge, lounge with cable TV, hi-speed wifi.

Interaction with Guests

I welcome guests to the apartment upon arrival and show them around the living space, and provide maps, directions to where they need to go, and advice on tourist destinations or best ways to get to their conference venue, etc, if needed. I find then that most guests are happy being relatively self-sufficient.

If guests ever need or want to ask questions, I'm usually around and available, and always happy to help out. I also am happy to chat to guests, and sometimes share a glass of wine or a meal. We often end up having chats in the hallway or kitchen, at the end of the day, and if there are multiple guests, sometimes the guests get to know each other.

In general, however, most guests coming are here for work or to visit family that already live here, so are happy to have a bit of happy company, but be left to do their own thing most of the time. I provide advice often on life in Geneva, and the ins and outs of various aspects of life here, and get on well with all the guests I've had so far!

Essentially, the level of interaction is really up to each guest - I've been known to race to the airport to deliver a forgotten passport to a guest, to book appointments for guests at my favourite hair salon, and on more than one occasion to invite guests to celebrate Christmas dinner with my friends and I. More than one AirBnB guest and I have ended up collaborating on work projects together! At the other extreme, I've had a guest stay for a week and never see them after the initial greeting as our schedules meant we worked and slept to different rhythms and this guest wanted and needed nothing from me - I won't bother you if you don't want me to, but if you need anything, I'm here for you :)

The Neighborhood

The apartment is in the quiet end of the Paquis (central-most inner-city suburb between the main train station and the lake), close to the Botanic Gardens and the Lake Leman. When you leave the apartment, you can walk in one direction and be in the heart of the city, a short walk from the lake and the Old Town. Or walk in the other direction, and you are in parkland, by beautiful restored villas, along the lakeside, watching the boats and the ducks.

The vibrant Paquis area is full of restaurants and shops - it is one of the most interesting areas to stay in Geneva (and don't worry, yes, it is safe and the apartment is located well away from the red light district!). The lake is only one block away, so morning or evening jogs or walks along the quai are delightful, and in summertime you are close to one of the best lake swimming places (Bains des Paquis), which also serves in winter time as the best venue for going for a sauna and/or having a typical Swiss meal of fondue with the locals!

There is limited street parking available, and limited metered parking, and it is not always easy to find a park in this area. However, I have a secure carpark in a garage next to my apartment that I rent to AirBnB guests, so please let me know if you need parking. There are also large parking garages nearby at the main train station and other areas within walking distance or a short tram ride, where cars can be parked, for a price!

Public transport is easily accessible from this apartment, including the small or large boats that you can take for trips across the lake!

Getting around

The apartment is just around the corner from a tram stop on the number 15 main tram line. So it is very central to the railway station, the United Nations (UN) Palais des Nations, and Palais Wilson, shops, restaurants and the lively heart of Geneva. It is just two tram stops away from the main train station, about 10 minutes walk, and easy to get to from the airport.

Other Things to Note

This AirBnB listing is for a room in a shared apartment. The other occupants of the apartment are your host, and possibly one or two other AirBnB guests (i.e. a single or couple occupant of the third bedroom in this three bedroom apartment). Your host lives permanently in this apartment. If you want to rent multiple rooms at this same time, it may be possible to rent two guest rooms (depending on availability), but it is not possible to rent the entire apartment.

Please note that while I do occasionally accept longer term guests (up to 3 months duration), and there can be some flexibility in pricing depending on availability and busy periods, my prices are set out clearly on this page and large discounts cannot be offered for long-term stays given the high demand from regularly returning guests for short term visits.

How does your stay in this apartment helps a young student learn about human rights?

The reason I rent my spare rooms through AirBnB is very simple - I do so in order to fund an internship program for students and young practitioners in human rights to come to Geneva and learn about the United Nations and human rights advocacy. The cost of living in Geneva is very high, and while it is the centre of the world for learning about human rights, it is prohibitively expensive for the vast majority of young people to come here to gain practical experience in learning how to be human rights advocates. But by using the (very little bit of) profit I make from AirBnB to provide free accommodation for young interns in a student residence, I am able to offer a rolling 3-month internship program (mentoring 3-4 interns at a time), to help train the next generation of human rights practitioners.

Since late 2012, thanks to our AirBnB guests doing nothing more than selecting this place to stay out from amongst the myriad of other options in Geneva, we've managed to offer funded internships to 16 young people. Many of our intern alumni are already back in their home countries, making and changing policies and laws, as they progress in world-changing careers! If you want more information about how renting out rooms through AirBnB to support human rights interns is part of my social entrepreneurship endeavours - search online for more info about my organisation, Te Atawhai Nation.

  • Claire is a great host, she was easy to communicate with and very helpful. Plus the apartment was very clean! It's a quick walk to the lake and public transit is just steps from the apartment. I was only there for a day but would have loved to stay longer.

  • Claire is an amazing host. The room was spacious and comfortable. She made us feel like her home was our home.

The location was perfect for us. Close enough to walk from the train station with luggage. Quick walk to the lake, restaurants, and shops.

  • Claire was a delightful hostess. The accommodation was comfortable, the hours of arriving and departing were exceptionally flexible. It was a stress free experience.

  • My husband and I were here for just one night and it was lovely. We took the number 15 tram for the one stop as we had heavy bags (but it is walkable otherwise) and within about an hour, thanks to Claire's tips, we were swimming in Lake Leman, at the Plage des Paquis peninsula, about 15 minutes walk away!
There are two bathrooms, and the two rooms that are available in this flat are both clean, bright and spacious and do not overlook a road but are peaceful and at the back. Claire also has a nice coffee machine and a tea machine for guests too. What was really helpful was being able to rest/wait in the lounge for a few more hours than we had anticipated - as our relative's incoming flight the next day was delayed. Had it not been for this flexibility, we would have had to wait around in the baking heat somewhere. Claire was friendly and hospitable and told us to feel at home, which we did. There is also good wifi- and a lift, great for heavy bags. You can also hire bikes nearby for free for four hours (just bring photo ID with you though and 20 CHF francs or Euros PER BIKE that you get back, it's 2 CHF extra per bike for insurance). Look out for 'Geneve Roule', a kiosk on the lake's walk-way, to the right of the 'peninsula-esque' beach as you look out onto the lake. Claire's flat is very central, with a grocery nearby on rue Lausanne if you want food for a picnic. Thank you Claire, it was great to meet you and stay in your home.

  • We stayed only for one night in Geneva, but Claire sure knew hoy to make our time count! She received us in her amazing apartment and right away she told us where to go and what to do in order to use our time wisely... and she was so right in all her recommendations! Thanks a lot, Claire! The room, by the way, was beautiful, very clean, luminous and comfortable

  • We were in Geneva for only one night and Claire's apartment was perfect. It really is centrally located, two tram stops from the central train station for easy arrival with luggage and easy walking distance from downtown for dinner and an evening walk along the lake. Claire met us at the door, showed us her apartment and made us feel at home there, and gave us recommendations for our few hours in Geneva. I'm looking forward to visiting Geneva again, and hope to find accommodation at Claire's for our entire visit.

About
Hi! I'm an international human rights advocate, international law professor and social entrepreneur, and have been living in Geneva for over a decade. Originally I'm half Australian and half Kiwi (from New Zealand). I love living in Geneva; it's a great city, although it has its quirks! I've had guests of one kind or another occupying my spare rooms (or before that, the couch) for most of life - I enjoy having guests, and love to entertain, but I can appreciate giving people their own quiet space as I also need my own 'time out'. I love to cook, so if you come at the right time, I may have been baking and you'll get to share :) I'm looking forward to welcoming you to my apartment. Your stay in my apartment helps a young student learn about human rights!
