The Non-Hipster Hipster Pad
ArtFulLife is a comfortable, stylish, art-filled pied de terre in the heart of Portland’s historic Alphabet District. With 800 sq ft, it’s big enough to spread out, relax, and enjoy car-free urban living. This unique, quirky basement unit in one of the neighborhood’s Good Old Houses is home to an eclectic collection of original artworks, and sits just 50 feet off 23rd Avenue, one of Portland’s iconic shopping streets. Far from being just another sleek condo in yet another soulless high-rise, ArtFulLife is perfect for the urban adventurer – full of personality with a clean, contemporary décor that’s funky without the funk.
Built in 1885 and converted to a duplex 20 years later, the gracious home has changed with the neighborhood. The duplex was transformed into a sleeping house in 1940 for the war effort and to support Portland's shipyards. Today the house has nine separate, self-contained units; this one is literally the foundation (brick-exposed) to an active, vibrant home, and is my home when I’m in town.
If you’re a history buff like me, you’ll appreciate knowing that the Alphabet District is a unique community named for its alphabetic progression of street names, and was added to the National Register of Historic Districts in 2000. A bastion of urban upstarts, it was home to Portland’s first neighborhood association formed over 40 years ago. As a neighborhood board member myself, I voted for the streetcar to come to our neighborhood – the first streetcar added to an American city in over 50 years.
Whether you call it Nob Hill, the Alphabet District, or simply Northwest Portland, the shops and eateries here have always been among the best in the city. And this place couldn’t put you any closer to them. ArtFulLife is only two blocks from the 23rd and Lovejoy streetcar stop, making it an easy ride to/from the airport.
After living in NW for over 25 years, I now only live part time in Portland. I want to share the fun and funkiness of my unconventional place with like-minded people who appreciate its unique blend of art, history, and lifestyle. ArtFulLife brings it all together – and keeps you in the mix.

We would stay here again in a minute. Fred was easy to get a hold of when we had a question and was the kind of host you hope for on Airbnb. ArtFulLife was in the perfect location, near great restaurants and a fun part of town so we could walk all over the place, and we took advantage of the parking spot. It was exactly what we had hoped for. The apartment, kitchen, bath were well equipped. The artwork makes this place interesting and fun. I must say that it was hard to leave. Highly recommend!
Fred was incredibly accessible and helpful in all of his communications. Loved the place, perfect location and the home had everything we needed! Highly recommend.
Wonderful stay at ArtFulLife. The place has great Feng Shui, intriguing art, and all the mod cons. The location is nice too, a quiet tree-lined street just around the corner from lively NW 23rd. Fred was very responsive and helpful with all my questions. Highly recommended!
This place was amazing! Fred was a great host. The worst part is leaving, because you'll wish you lived there. Not to mention the neighborhood is something out of a movie! I can't wait to come back. Great experience!
I had a great time at ArtFullLife in Portland, Oregon. The apartment was very spacious and the kitchen was well-stocked - additionally, it was decorated with all sorts of art (paintings, photos, etc.), which was very cool. Fred was incredibly responsive to any questions I had and was consistently helpful and communicative. The apartment is in the Alphabet District of Portland, very close to various bus stops and trolley stops, so it's in a prime location for exploring the city (Portland has really good public transportation). I was in town for a research convention, but in my free time I was able to visit attractions such as Powell's books, Mississippi Records, Washington Park, and Jimmy Mak's jazz club - among others.
It was a great experience, and I'd definitely stay here again - and I definitely recommend it to anyone visiting Portland.
Fred was very responsive and quick to address any challenges that arose. The location is spectacular and the neighborhood is wonderful and a must visit to anyone travelling to Portland.
The unit is a mother in-law suite very comfortable and attractive. The folks above us were very active so you could here a few foot stomps but not loud enough to keep you up at night. Full kitchen, pots, pans, dishware, and silverware if you decide to make meals in. All in all, it was a very cozy place and we would visit again.
This was my first experience using Airbnb, and Fred was a great initial host. He was always quick to respond to all of my questions and answered them thoroughly. The location is wonderful - right off 23rd in the Alphabet district.
