The Non-Hipster Hipster Pad
ArtFulLife is a comfortable, stylish, art-filled pied de terre in the heart of Portland’s historic Alphabet District. With 800 sq ft, it’s big enough to spread out, relax, and enjoy car-free urban living. This unique, quirky basement unit in one of the neighborhood’s Good Old Houses is home to an eclectic collection of original artworks, and sits just 50 feet off 23rd Avenue, one of Portland’s iconic shopping streets. Far from being just another sleek condo in yet another soulless high-rise, ArtFulLife is perfect for the urban adventurer – full of personality with a clean, contemporary décor that’s funky without the funk.
Built in 1885 and converted to a duplex 20 years later, the gracious home has changed with the neighborhood. The duplex was transformed into a sleeping house in 1940 for the war effort and to support Portland's shipyards. Today the house has nine separate, self-contained units; this one is literally the foundation (brick-exposed) to an active, vibrant home, and is my home when I’m in town.
If you’re a history buff like me, you’ll appreciate knowing that the Alphabet District is a unique community named for its alphabetic progression of street names, and was added to the National Register of Historic Districts in 2000. A bastion of urban upstarts, it was home to Portland’s first neighborhood association formed over 40 years ago. As a neighborhood board member myself, I voted for the streetcar to come to our neighborhood – the first streetcar added to an American city in over 50 years.
Whether you call it Nob Hill, the Alphabet District, or simply Northwest Portland, the shops and eateries here have always been among the best in the city. And this place couldn’t put you any closer to them. ArtFulLife is only two blocks from the 23rd and Lovejoy streetcar stop, making it an easy ride to/from the airport.
After living in NW for over 25 years, I now only live part time in Portland. I want to share the fun and funkiness of my unconventional place with like-minded people who appreciate its unique blend of art, history, and lifestyle. ArtFulLife brings it all together – and keeps you in the mix.

Fred has a fantastic flat just moments from lovely shops, bars and restaurants. The flat was very clean, great kitchen facilities, washer and dryer and a comfortable bed. Really lovely stay. Thanks!
This was a great place to stay if wanting to be in the mix of Portland's Alphabet/GooseHollow districts. We enjoyed Fred's ability to accommodate our early arrival as well as his aptness in answering any of our questions. We would no doubt come back and stay again!
Fred's basement appartment is spacious, cozy, elegant and ideally located right next to NW 23rd. Thanks again for the hospitality, would definitely recommend to anyone.
Great place, great neighborhood, street parking was easy.
ArtFulLife was better than we could have imagined. If you want to experience Portland like a local then this is a great place. The layout is open and warm, Funky art is in every corner. Our friends stayed at the local Northrup Inn, which was great too, but we were very glad to have a "home" in Portland. ArtFulLife's location is incredible. Right in the mix of great shops, restaurants, with easy walking to lots of things. Fred was easy to communicate with and made sure our stay was comfortable. We love ArtFulLife.
ArtFulLife was a great place to stay on our weekend in Portland. The art in the apartment made the pad feel cozy and welcoming. There's more than enough room for 2 people. The location is great and near some very nice and relaxed cafes, restaurants, and shops. Everything was clean. Fred did a great job at communicating with us through the process - there were no problems at all!
We greatly enjoyed our stay at ArtFulLife. The apartment is comfortable, superbly equipped (kitchen especially!) and spotlessly clean. The artwork and decor show it to be a home, not just a rental.
The location is ideal, being close to restaurants, shops, etc., etc in inner Portland ... it's just a short stroll from the easy-to-use streetcar.
Fred was a most obliging host who helped us out of a problem with a big favour ... for which we are most grateful ... thanks Fred!
A highly recommended place for a couple to stay!
Fred's place in NW Portland was absolutely perfect! The place is located in one of the coolest neighborhoods in Portland, only blocks from bars, restaurants, cool shops and lots of activity. If the purpose was to make my wife want to move to Portland, it sure did the trick.
The place itself is very unique (just like Portland) with all kinds of cool art throughout the apt. I kept finding new pieces that I didn't notice before. The bed was very comfortable and there was everything we needed in the apt.
Fred was very easy to contact and communicate with. He gave us easy directions to the place on public transportation and getting and turning in the keys was super easy.
The next time I come to Portland I'd definitely stay at ArtFulLife again - that is unless I'm moving into my own place :)
My boyfriend and I had a wonderful time! The apartment was in a fantastic location surrounded by lots of good restaurants and shops. The apartment was clean, trendy, and just what we needed. The only constructive feedback we had was the small size of the shower. Other than that the place was great-we will definitely come again when we return to Portland! Fred was also very kind and showed us around the apartment when we got there.
Perfect location for NW Portland. Great restaurants and eclectic shopping just down the street. I got to bike across the bridges.
Fred's basement stayed cool on the hottest days. We stayed most of a month and would stay there again.
