The Space

The Non-Hipster Hipster Pad

ArtFulLife is a comfortable, stylish, art-filled pied de terre in the heart of Portland’s historic Alphabet District. With 800 sq ft, it’s big enough to spread out, relax, and enjoy car-free urban living. This unique, quirky basement unit in one of the neighborhood’s Good Old Houses is home to an eclectic collection of original artworks, and sits just 50 feet off 23rd Avenue, one of Portland’s iconic shopping streets. Far from being just another sleek condo in yet another soulless high-rise, ArtFulLife is perfect for the urban adventurer – full of personality with a clean, contemporary décor that’s funky without the funk.

Built in 1885 and converted to a duplex 20 years later, the gracious home has changed with the neighborhood. The duplex was transformed into a sleeping house in 1940 for the war effort and to support Portland's shipyards. Today the house has nine separate, self-contained units; this one is literally the foundation (brick-exposed) to an active, vibrant home, and is my home when I’m in town.

If you’re a history buff like me, you’ll appreciate knowing that the Alphabet District is a unique community named for its alphabetic progression of street names, and was added to the National Register of Historic Districts in 2000. A bastion of urban upstarts, it was home to Portland’s first neighborhood association formed over 40 years ago. As a neighborhood board member myself, I voted for the streetcar to come to our neighborhood – the first streetcar added to an American city in over 50 years.

Whether you call it Nob Hill, the Alphabet District, or simply Northwest Portland, the shops and eateries here have always been among the best in the city. And this place couldn’t put you any closer to them. ArtFulLife is only two blocks from the 23rd and Lovejoy streetcar stop, making it an easy ride to/from the airport.

After living in NW for over 25 years, I now only live part time in Portland. I want to share the fun and funkiness of my unconventional place with like-minded people who appreciate its unique blend of art, history, and lifestyle. ArtFulLife brings it all together – and keeps you in the mix.

Overall Guest Satisfaction

Check In
  • What a fabulous location! ArtfulLife was not only walkable to our conference location but steps away from a wide range of cafes, restaurants and boutiques, just blocks to Trader Joe's and my favourite Strawberry, Balsamic Vinegar and Honey freshmade ice cream at Salt and Straw. The lovely studio suite was clean, comfortable and filled with a thoughtfully curated and eclectic mix of furniture and art that was a delight to explore. We saw something new every time we looked. We appreciated the parking in the driveway for the $10/day fee as street parking would have been challenging. We didn't want for anything and thoroughly enjoyed our stay in Portland's historic Alphabet District. We truly felt like guests and not tenants. Thanks, Fred. We'll be back!

  • Fred's home was exactly what we hoped. The accommodations were fantastic and the location was perfect. Our intention on this trip was to spend as much time downtown as possible, and everything we wanted access to was within walking distance. Fred was also super easy to communicate with, and he was very responsive to our needs. We cannot recommend Fred's place highly enough.

  • I recently accompanied my daughter while she attend the Floral Design Institute in Portland for three weeks. Staying at the ArtFulLife was a great decision.
It was walking distance from coffee shops, great restaurants and shopping. I felt very safe staying at the ArtFulLife and I was able to meet some great neighbors
and I also had the great opportunity to meet Fred. I highly recommend staying at the ArtFulLife and I will defiantly use AirBnB for future travels.

  • This was a great place to stay if wanting to be in the mix of Portland's Alphabet/GooseHollow districts. We enjoyed Fred's ability to accommodate our early arrival as well as his aptness in answering any of our questions. We would no doubt come back and stay again!

  • ArtFulLife was better than we could have imagined. If you want to experience Portland like a local then this is a great place. The layout is open and warm, Funky art is in every corner. Our friends stayed at the local Northrup Inn, which was great too, but we were very glad to have a "home" in Portland. ArtFulLife's location is incredible. Right in the mix of great shops, restaurants, with easy walking to lots of things. Fred was easy to communicate with and made sure our stay was comfortable. We love ArtFulLife.

    November 2013
  • ArtFulLife was a great place to stay on our weekend in Portland. The art in the apartment made the pad feel cozy and welcoming. There's more than enough room for 2 people. The location is great and near some very nice and relaxed cafes, restaurants, and shops. Everything was clean. Fred did a great job at communicating with us through the process - there were no problems at all!
