Our cabin is a light-filled and cozy retreat for guests wanting a rustic, yet comfortable VT experience! Get away from it all, yet be close to everything Vermont has to offer year round! Minutes from Dartmouth College and King Arthur Bakery/School.

The space

Nestled on a wooded hillside at the end of the road, our cabin is a light-filled, peaceful and cozy retreat. Two sleeping lofts are accessible by ladder stair above the living area. One loft has a double bed, and the other loft has two twin beds. In the colder months, a Jotul wood stove is your sole source of heat--we'll get the cabin toasty for you before your arrival, and you manage the wood stove to your comfort level during your stay. A kitchenette with bottled water (no running water), sink, small fridge, an induction cooktop, dishes, and cooking utensils is available if you prefer to prepare/eat meals in the cabin. A "state of the art" Swedish composting toilet provides the basic amenities in the cabin. Bed and bath linens are provided. Full bathing facilities are located just steps away in main house.

The cabin has a private deck overlooking a small stream, a covered front porch, and full access to our gardens, woods and trails.

Full access to our main house is just a short stroll through the gardens. These amenities include access to two full bathrooms (one with a large stall and rain-shower, the other with a deep soaking tub--we also have a lovely outside shower available during warm months). Cabin guests are welcome to use our well-supplied kitchen, living and dining areas, and grounds. A self-serve breakfast, which includes locally produced foods is also included in nightly rate.

We are located 9 miles from the I-91/ I-89 interstate junction, within a short 20 minute drive to Dartmouth College/Hanover, NH, 20 minutes to Woodstock, VT, as well as many ski areas and local attractions. Driving times from Boston: 2.5 hours; NYC: 5 hours; Montreal: 3.5 hours. Public transportation from Boston, New York and Burlington/Montreal (trains and buses) are available to nearby White River Junction. You will need a car to get around, as much of Vermont and New Hampshire is rural with little to no public transportation. There are a number of rental car agencies nearby in West Lebanon, NH/White River Jct, VT. There are many restaurants within a short drive (15-30 minutes).

Our open living/dining room area is naturally well lit with views across the valley and woodlands. Sited above the confluence of two streams, a large deck, screened porch and stone patios flank the southern side of the house, offering space for relaxing or working outdoors. High speed internet and wifi are available, but no television.

We have 4 dogs: a friendly Corgi (our Concierge), a shy Great Pyrenees rescue, a sweet Norwegian Elkhound, and a friendly rescue Cockapoo mix. Our 2 rescue cats are mostly outdoors. Many wild birds visit our feeders year round. We have Icelandic chickens that free range and lay delicious eggs (sometimes it's a bit of an egg hunt to find them!), and Swedish ducks that keep our garden free of pests, and provide endless entertainment. In the summer, our house is surrounded by perennial and vegetable gardens, and a growing orchard on the hill above.

Our property is adjacent to the Appalachian Trail Corridor and is contiguous with Land Trust and town forest, offering access right out our backdoor to miles and miles of trails for walking, hiking, mountain biking and cross country skiing. Each season offers opportunities to glimpse wildlife and birds.

We hope you will consider our home, Solheim ("sunhouse" in Norwegian) for a beautiful Vermont mountain retreat within easy driving distance of many northern New England attractions and activities year round.

Guest access

Guests will have access to cabin, grounds, and all public areas in the main house, including kitchen, dining, living rooms, bathrooms. Wifi and a landline are available in cabin and at house (no cell coverage at house).

Interaction with guests

Guests are warmly welcomed to our home. We will be in residence during your stay, but you determine how much you want to interact. We orient you to the house, and are available to answer any questions. If you prefer to have privacy or less interaction, feel free to come and go as you please. If you enjoy some conversation or a shared breakfast with us, we are more than happy to engage--we've met many wonderful people through airbnb!

Other things to note

During the winter months, Vermont roads require at least snow tires. Many people have 4 wheel drive vehicles, or use studded snow tires. Our road is well-maintained by the town, but it is a typical Vermont mountain road--it may impassable without good snow tires or 4 wheel drive/studded snows until the plow comes through. If you have any questions, please ask!

Alexandra's cabin was a wonderful change of pace for us. Very quiet and beautiful spot with sweet pets on the property. We enjoyed coffee on our little porch while watching the ducks mill around the pond. A short drive to good food and great hiking. Would definitely stay here again when we come back to the area.

This was our second time staying at Solheim Cabin and we can't get enough of it. The fire is a really nice touch, the cabin is so cozy, and Alexandra and Martha are wonderful hosts! Everything was perfect and we love that some animals came to hang out in the evenings. Thank you for another amazing weekend!

Solheim Farm was a beautiful weekend getaway for my boyfriend and I. Alexandra and Martha were very friendly and accommodating hosts. They helped us feel at home immediately, from showing us around to lending us their hiking books. Their house and the surrounding gardens are gorgeous, and as dog lovers, we loved meeting all 4 dogs, especially Finn the corgi!

We recently stayed here with our 2 year old and almost 4 year old. While the ladders up to the lofts were tricky to keep our 2 yr old safe, we all loved the cabin and all of the animals there. The hosts were friendly and helpful. The location was beautiful! It was the adventure we were hoping for!

Response from Alexandra:
So glad you found us, Nicki and Drew! We appreciated your willingness to share your observations of the children with regards to the cabin lofts and will be making some improvements along the lines we discussed. It was great to meet you all and hope you will stay with us again. We loved the girls' music and seeing two great parents in action!

We were tickled and delighted with our cabin. Ladders to the beds and a composting toilet, we felt like 10 year olds with an awesome fort! One of the dogs even came to keep us company and show us around. We will definitely go back.

My parter and I spent an amazing long weekend at Alex's beautiful cabin. Alex was an amazing host: she made us feel so comfortable and welcomed in her beautiful home. Alex truly went above and beyond, keeping a light on for us when we arrived back at the cabin after dark and letting us use her iron to prep for a wedding we were attending. The cabin is so cozy and perfectly appointed. We loved spending time reading on the porch with adorable Finn the corgi, looking out on Alex's beautiful garden and watching bumble bees and humming birds enjoying the warm summer afternoons. We had no trouble quickly driving to Hanover, Norwich and Lebanon throughout our trip and found Alex's cabin to be the perfect spot to explore from.

I live in Norwich, Vermont, but am a graduate student at Harvard, so commute to Boston regularly. My area of study is International Relations with an emphasis on sustainable development, education and human rights. I've been working in education and education administration, as well as organization development consulting for the past 20+ years. Our house is our home, homestead and sanctuary. We are enjoying developing our property according to permaculture principles and have put in a fruit tree orchard, honeybees, a simple rainwater catchment system, vegetable, perennial, forest and native species gardening are underway, and we are managing the land for sustainable biodiversity. In addition, we have a well established sugarbush with approximately 450 taps. Guests visiting during maple sugaring season may have the opportunity to participate--depending on mother nature and the trees.
