Thank you John. We had a wonderful week. Bear's Den is spacious, comfortable, and secluded. We will recommend your cabin to family and friends. Our review follows:
Check in was at a little wedding chapel down the road. This is a simple and easy process. My husband spoke with John once during our stay because we were confused about how the thermostat worked. Steven said he was very friendly and accommodating.
The cabin is furnished with most of the basic items you will need. The flat screen tv is great. Cable offers a lot of choices.
Bring your hairdryer. I didn't.
There is ample storage with dressers and walk-in closets. However, there were ZERO clothes hangers. You might want to bring your own.
Also consider bringing extra towels. There are 4 bath towels (2 in each bath) and they are wearing thin. Our bed was comfy and we liked the room. This place is very spacious and would work well for two couples. We liked being secluded but also close to town. We were surprised to be so close to the Art Loop - lots of fun.
We cooked several meals and were happy with the kitchen. Also, the washer and dryer were wonderful.
Be prepared to hear critters running around on the deck and also on the roof. We got used to it. We had a few wasps to deal with throughout the week but we found wasp spray in the kitchen. We also played catch and release with a lizard.
The only thing that I really wished for were interior security locks like one finds at a hotel. Bear's Den locks work with a code. Anyone having a key or the code can come in at any time. That made us a bit uncomfortable.
Make sure that you arrive during the day. The road is very narrow with steep drops on the side (no guardrails in this area), steep inclines, and hairpin turns in some places. Once you've been there it's not an issue but I would have been scared to try to find it for the first time after dark. I would never want to drive on this road in icy conditions. GPS worked great and got us there with no problems.
There is parking area beside and in front of the cabin. If you have more than one car someone is going to have to back down the very steep drive.
I was advised upon arrival that the wi-fi can be iffy. This worried me because we like to do a bit of work when we travel. We had no issues with wi-fi. It worked perfectly for us.
Bear's Den is a fun place to call home for a few days or weeks. And, just a few changes, upgrades, etc would take this place from a nice cabin to a fabulous cabin.
Great cabin... Secluded but close to town. Everything was provided and clean for our stay.
The lodge was lovely, extremely spacious for my husband and I. We enjoyed cooking all our meals at "home", spent a cool rainy afternoon in the hot tub on the deck, enjoyed happy hour listening to and photographing birds from the deck, and the days were enjoyed in the park. Just perfect for us. John and his staff were available, prompt and gracious with any concern. We are trying to figure out when we can come back! The supermarket was close and did not require a trip through town which was a plus for us.
Great location - outside of the more touristy downtown "strip" but in the heart of the more quaint arts and crafts community and close to hiking locations in the National Park. The hot tub was super clean and amazing each night after hiking. The upstairs bedroom loft is roomy, but lacks privacy (visible from the living room downstairs). This wasn't really a problem for our group of 3, but could be more awkward for a different group. The couches were recently upgraded to leather, making the living room nicer than what was shown! The kitchen was functional and had ample dishes for our group of 3. Like many houses in this area, the driveway is very steep. Overall, a great experience. We would come back and stay here again!
If you are on the fence about reserving this cabin, click 'Book It' now! I cannot tell you how amazing the Bear's Den cabin is, the pictures don't do it justice! We plan to make this our lodging of choice for every future visit to Gatlinburg. Everything was super clean, beds were comfortable with extra pillows, the hot tub was perfect temperature, the jacuzzi tub was romantic, the kitchen was well stocked for us to cook dinner, the views were secluded and beautiful, everything was picture perfect. The jacuzzi tub was HUGE and I expected the hot water to run out before we got it filled, but we had no issues there. The property is fairly close to Gatlinburg (10 minutes)but we wanted a secluded vacation and this was perfect for us. We were however only a few minutes away from the grocery store so that was nice. The other reason we loved it so much was the awesome customer service! The host and his wife were AMAZING to us and I cannot thank them enough. We got up there just in time for the huge ice/snow storm. The power went out at about 6:30AM and I texted John about it. He was responding to me and calling the power company within 15mins. and it came back up within 2hours, but no problem there because they had some extra wood stocked up that kept us warm with the cozy fireplace (although I do recommend bringing your own, in case the wood there gets depleted or wet before your stay, we brought a lot of our own but ended up using some there as well). The day we were supposed to checkout, I got my car stuck in the snow. (A standard vehicle wouldn't have any problems, I'm just a terrible driver with tires that need to be replaced). John and his wife brought us groceries and then instead ended up helping my fiance get our car unstuck and out of the subdivision, so we could get on the road home. They are amazing hosts and I couldn't appreciate them more. Even when I had small questions they were prompt with responses and very friendly, the type of Southern hospitality that one loves to see in Tennessee. This property is beautiful, and such a great deal! We enjoyed our vacation so much and can't wait to come back.
Unfortunately, there was an issue with the booking of this cabin. We did not know the cabin was double booked until we arrived to checkin. John was nice and found us somewhere else to stay, but definitely was not what we had paid for. Frustrated we called air bnb, and they refunded us back half of the total back to the credit card, and the other half in air bnb credit.
Samantha did not actually stay in our cabin due to a problem with pre-approvals and the Air-Bnb service not taking the actual nights out of inventory. Until this is fixed I will not be using the pre-authorization system. I did find her another unit to stay in and actually paid more money out of pocket than she had paid to stay at our place. Also, Air-Bnb took care of her with a credit for another stay. Thanks, John
It was so nice! We come back for sure if we can! The only think was that the home was a little bit older than expected and the mattress weren't very good. Everything was clean.
About the Host, John
I'm a family guy, I have lived in or around Gatlinburg all my life. We do like meeting folks from all over the country and world. We have hosted several different couples from places far away and some from just around the corner (Nashville). I am a football fanatic, so don't let me get on that subject or I'll waste your time. Our family does strive to make your getaway a pleasant one.
