This is a rural setting, however there are 2 neighbors also on 4 acre properties. A farmer has right to move his cattle 1 x day on a right of way at the top of the property. We buy fresh citrus form local farmers. The village of Escampequita has a medical clinic, elementary school, chapel, a nice restaurant (Rancho Terra), 2 very small grocery outlets, baseball diamond and rodeo grounds. People are very friendly.
Local bus comes by the front gate 3 x a day. Taxi costs approx. $25 to SJDS.

One dog is okay to bring.
No loud partying.
The Wild Nica retreat was a great experience. Myself and my two friends decided somewhat last minute to do a surf trip to SJDS Nicaragua. Not originally planning on staying in a house, we were looking all around for hostels, motels, hotels that all seemed to be booked up. We quickly learned that it was Samana Santa (Easter), which I guess is very popular in Nica. Anyway, good thing because we found this perfect sized cottage just out of town with a wonderful host. We were welcomed warmly and it was almost as if the host Alex was another friend we hadn't seen in a while.
We were shown around town, set up with surf board rentals and driven to and from the beach every day! We also got free surf lessons and I am pretty sure I could go pro now if I wanted to! haha.
More on the cottage itself though, it is small and very basic and I want to stress that if you are higher maintenance it might not be the place for you. My friends and I are very easy going and the outhouse, slow running sink tap and distance from town did not bother us at all. In fact we actually loved the outdoor shower and are all thinking of doing the same thing back in Canada (so refreshing!). If you are into surfing the location is pretty prime. It is only a 5 minute drive to Playa Yankee which is less populated and nicer for getting a surf (scratch that... getting a wave! Yet another thing you will learn in your lesson- surf lingo).
Anyway, strongly recommend this place for the low maintenance, surfing motivated individual! Lots to do, easy to get to town for fun nights, and great host that makes anything you want happen!
