Kehena Beach Estate
Perched high on the edge of a lush tropical sea cliff at the dead end of this quaint coastal beach community's most exclusive cul de sac stands this expansive 4 bedroom 4 bath gated modern absolute oceanfront masterpiece whose custom design boasts direct views of exotic Kehena Black sand Beach from every major room in the house.

The estate incorporates a 2 bedroom Main House and 2 detached bedroom "cottage" suites that each feature their own well equipped kitchenette with sink, microwave, coffee maker, mini fridge as well as a beautifully furnished living area with TV/DVD and dining area with a bar height bistro set for two. Each unit has its own private phone line. Each of the 2 very private "cottage" suites are located on opposite poles of the estate and can be accessed through a series of doors with secure coded entries. The option to rent one or both of these units for an additional fee is available.
The main portion of the residence is centrally located . There are 2 oceanfront bedrooms upstairs, each with a Queen sized poster bed with elaborate marble furniture accents. Each of the 2 bedrooms has a flat screen TV/DVD player, stunning designer furniture and generous closet space. The upstairs bathroom has a double headed shower and European style bidet. The powder room is located downstairs. There is an outdoor shower with natural black lava rock walls adjacent to the pool which can be directly accessed from the sunken living room.
The entry level of the main portion of the residence has a dining room with Polynesian theme and seating area for 4, but one can seat up to an additional 4 people in the dining/kitchen area if desired. The kitchen is fully equipped including refrigerator, stove, oven, dishwasher, microwave, disposal, double sinks, dishes and utensils. The living room has a large mounted TV with DVD player, a large plush leather theater style sofa with ottomans and also 2 chaise lounges.
Kehena Beach Estate has amenities that simply can not be encountered elsewhere in this vicinity of the island. The total experience is more akin to a resort than it is to a typical vacation rental.

The "Loft" cottage suite is actually two levels with a Tempurpedic California King bamboo bed and the full bathroom on the upper level. A comfortable sofa that can function as a daybed is located on the lower living level of the Loft. It abuts the heated oceanfront pool which is built into the large oceanfront deck which is encircled with glass railing throughout in order to capitalize on one of the most spectacular vistas you will ever encounter. The pool has a Fastlane device by Endless Pools which allows one to adjust the optional current so that one may swim in place at one's preferred pace. Direct access to the pool is shared with the main central portion of the residence.
The "Studio" cottage suite has its own private lanai (open air balcony) for lounging and also has a full private bathroom. The lanai has glass railing that affords dramatic views of Kehena Beach through a mature coconut forest. It has a Queen sized elevated "Captain's Bed." For further convenience, the sofa can easily expand into a futon so as to provide 2 separate sleeping areas. One must first enter the large gym through coded French doors in order to proceed to access the next coded door in order to access the final coded door to the Studio.
Upon your arrival, you will notice that the oceanfront block is secured with 6 foot lava rock walls adorned with a series of elaborate artistic copper gates and matching light fixtures. All were custom designed by famed Honolulu based French sculptor Frederic Zimmer. The entry pillars of the estate will remain illuminated throughout the entire night for your safety and security. The estate is a fortress surrounded by 6 foot lava rock walls. For your added peace of mind, the property is secured with "panic buttons" monitored 24 hours a day by Alert Alarm of Hawaii. . A 24 hour Video Surveillance is also provided,
The courtyard greets you with an illuminated pond with nocturnal waterfall feature and a stunning variety of guppies and goldfish. An adjacent screened "Lobby" area is well furnished to accommodate your group and is the ideal site to gather in the evening by the soothing sounds of the waterfall and the chorus of Coqui frogs that it invites. The grounds are professionally landscaped and meticulously maintained. The garden foliage is striking and includes many varieties of bromeliads and orchids.
The gym is a recent addition and has a wall of sliding glass doors that overlook the courtyard gardens. It has a wall mounted TV/DVD player, blender, fridge, sink for your convenience. Dumbbells and a professional workout station that is equipped even for bench pressing or squats without the need for a spotter is provided.
You can swim in place at your own pace in the heated oceanfront pool which has a manual cover. It is solar heated with backup gas heat for your comfort. The oceanfront lanai has recently installed glass railing throughout so you can enjoy the panoramic views of Kehena Beach and Bay. There is ample space for a sizable group to sunbathe (or to dine) poolside on the furnished deck. Or, if you prefer, you may enjoy lounging on the grassy oceanfront lawn at the ocean's cliff front edge.
The oceanfront yard is terraced with a lava rock walkway above that has a unique imported covered teak swing for two. You can also access the basement level office which houses a printer and access to Wifi. Below there is a grassy lawn that is dotted with mature coconut trees and a cozy hammock. You will also encounter a new 9 person oceanfront spa. Don't forget to bring your I-Pod so you can plug it into the spa outlet and enjoy your favorite tunes.
If you can not resist the urge to visit Kehena Beach, it is a mere 5 minute walk from this, the closest oceanfront residence. This gorgeous strip of sand is not to be visited by the faint of heart. Although nudity is generally deemed unlawful in Hawaii, this beach has been routinely frequented by naturists since its formation back in the 1955 lava flow. Sturdy shoes are recommended to walk down the rocky trail to the beach. It is steep in some places and not deemed suitable for young children, the elderly, or anyone who might have significant physical limitations. It is, however, well worth the effort. The black sand, unlike the sand of most of Hawaii's "black" sand beaches is granular and pure black. The beach itself is reputed to be among Hawaii's most scenic beaches.
The privileged guests of Kehena Beach Estate will enjoy unobstructed direct views of Kehena Beach and Bay and extraordinary sunrises and will capture the cooling trade winds due to the primarily northeasterly orientation of the oceanfront aspect of the home. The cliff front is typically teeming with sea birds.

Kehena Bay is perhaps best known for the spinner dolphins that frequent the beach and can often be seen swimming among well-seasoned local swimmers who brave the often powerful currents and rip tides. It is not unusual to see the Spinner Dolphins performing acrobatics with the naked eye directly in front of the house. Whales can occasionally be viewed during the season from about November to April. At times, one can hear the eerie sounds of the Humpback Whales, particularly throughout the evening and night. Humpback Whale season in Hawaii generally runs from the latter part of November into late April or early May. Sea Turtles often can be spotted year round.
First time visitors to Kehena Beach are discouraged from entering the ocean, particularly the young, elderly, and those with physical limitations, as drownings in this area do periodically occur. Please don't be fooled by the claims that many will make of the ease of swimming with the dolphins! Undoubtedly, there are frequently opportunities to watch a considerable number of people swimming with the dolphins, but to do so as a malahini (newcomer) is not without considerable risk to the life and safety of the swimmer. The beautiful but rocky shoreline can prove to be unforgiving.
There is a drum circle that regularly occurs on Sundays on the beach. You can view it on U-tube. It tends to be very reminiscent of the sixties. Pakalolo (marijuana) is generally commonplace and the atmosphere is laid back and includes a very eclectic crowd. There are no facilities at Kehena Beach, but you are guests of the nearest oceanfront estate to the beach, so you are only minutes away by foot from all the comforts you may desire.
You may wish to access a lunar calendar and make a reservation around the time of the full moon. The experience of watching the moonlight shimmering on Kehena Bay can not be aptly described with words. On certain months, you may be afforded the opportunity to watch the moon rise over the ocean horizon.
Kehena Beach Estate is about a 40 minute drive south of Hilo, the state of Hawaii's second largest city, which offers daily nonstop flights from Los Angeles and weekly nonstop flights from San Francisco. HIlo is a slower paced town that has a very rainy climate and it boasts several gorgeous tropical botanical gardens as well as close proximity to the famed Akaka Falls which are highly recommended. The tropical fauna in this Windward town is colorful and verdant, owing to the average 200 inches or so of annual rainfall. This is in sharp contrast to the Leeward Kona side of the island which is very dry with many barren lava fields.
The weather patterns at Kehena Beach Estate could best be described as the perfect blend of sun, wind, and showers. It is located in what many refer to as the "sunbelt" of the rainforest region. Nightly showers are rather typical, particularly during the winter season. The average rainfall is less than 50 percent of that which one would encounter in Hilo, which is only a 35 to 40 minute drive away. Days are usually sunny and breezy with occasional showers. The temperature is ideal, often 5 degrees or so cooler than the neighboring island of Oahu's city of Honolulu. The "vog" which originates from the volcano typically blows over to the Kona side of the island and accounts for the unusual sunsets one may encounter on the Leeward coast of Hawaii Island, or the "Big Island" as it is better known. The world's standard for the cleanest air on earth is reputed to be just 15 minutes north of Kehena Beach Estate.
Neither air conditioning nor heating are deemed necessary in the vicinity of Kehena Beach Estate. All bedrooms and the living room are equipped with ceiling fans and the direct ventilation of the cooling Trade Winds. Daytime temperatures in the warmer months may reach the lower to mid eighties, while temperatures will tend to reach the mid to upper seventies in the cooler months of the year. Nighttime temperatures are ideal for sleeping and are usually in the upper sixties to lower seventies during the warmest months, while temperatures will drop to the mid to lower sixties during the cooler months of the year.

It is hoped by the developer of Kehena Beach Estate that you have been provided with a helpful and accurate portrayal of what precisely you might encounter if you elect to visit here at this splendid and one of a kind estate. We look forward to assisting you in enjoying a most memorable, relaxing, yet adventurous visit to one of the world's most intriguing and scenic land and seascapes and are confident of your return patronage and referral to your friends, family , acquaintances and colleagues.

Mahalo nui loa (Many thanks),
Iliahi

  • The location and setting of this home is fantastic. It is very close to the little beach with black sand and with a car, one can drive anywhere. Whales and other sea creatures can be seen out the window or by standing on the deck, if the timing is right.
The linens and towels were clean and there were lots of dishes and cooking utensils, although there are several good places to go for delicious food, so the need to cook is minimal. We recommend the "fish and chips" place in the local Pahoa village market (sorry, we can't remember the name, but it is right by the Subway).
The house has many interesting features from the decorations to the design that make the stay very comfortable and luxurious.
The description and pictures are accurate; however, the weight room is dated. The laundry room is clean, well set-up and easy to use.
The hosts were reasonable, friendly and always available; they were only a phone call away. We were met at the house and given a tour, along with details on using and locking the house. The chocolates, necklaces and sparkling wine were nice welcome gifts.

We recommend staying at this home.
