We're a casual, laid-back, hip couple with a teenage son and lovable, well-behaved dog, living in a light-filled house in a gorgeous golf-course setting, just blocks from Metra and CTA to Chicago. You'll have a unique code for the front door keypad and can go in and out without seeing us if that's your preference. You'll have the extra bedroom and across-the-hall private bath on the second, same floor as our family bedrooms, so you might run into us upstairs. We do provide lattes!

The space

The guest room is clean and comfortable, with wood floors, a queen-size bed with lots of pillows, antique dresser, nightstands, good reading lamps, closet with plenty of hangers, rocking chair, portable laptop desk, power strip for charging your electronics, tourist brochures for the area, free high-speed wireless, a fan and AC when needed, and windows that open to our beautiful flower (or snowy!) garden on a quiet street and next to a golf course. You'll have a carafe of fresh, filtered water and probably a small treat. You will have a private bathroom across the hall with tub/shower, basic toiletries. and windows.

Once you book with us, we send out a confirmation email including our address/contact info and docs detailing public transportation options from the airports. We've been taking a break from hosting but we've had lots of happy guests so check out our reviews, and email if you have any questions!

Guest access

PLEASE NOTE: We are sorry, but we are currently unable to provide breakfast. We do provide access to coffee and tea in our kitchen. If we're here, we'll make it for you, and if we'll be otherwise occupied, we'll make sure you know where everything is. You are welcome to store leftovers in our refrigerator, but we do not offer kitchen use.

Our house is next to a beautiful public golf course, and you are welcome to enjoy our lovely deck with its quiet and peaceful view of the woods, 12th green, golfers, walkers, runners, dog walkers, cross-country skiers and various wildlife.

Interaction with guests

Our own bedrooms and bathroom are on the same level as the guest room, but we keep doors closed and we're extremely respectful of guests' privacy needs. We're pretty busy and not at all intrusive, but we're happy to chat if we're around, have time, and you're into that!

We love staying at the GartzBarn and seeing the Gartzman family! This is our first choice when it comes to staying in Evanston as we visit our daughter at NU. Sue and Howard are gracious and warm hosts who always make us feel at home. Their home is in a lovely location that is a short walk to campus and downtown. They provide a lovely bedroom and bath with all of the right touches; fluffy towels, fresh flowers, treats and a latte in the morning! What's not to love? They are a wonderful family and we feel so grateful that they open their home to us for our favorite stay in Evanston. We highly recommend a stay here!

The Gartzman's were very congenial and the place was clean but cluttered. Had a pleasent stay but had 2 objections: 1st: the bedroom was on the second floor and the winding staircase had no handrail. 2nd: The shower/tub had no hold bar. Overall I enjoyed my stay.

Response from Sue:
Apologies for the clutter, Raymond! We recently bought a new sofa and were in the process of moving lots of things around and reorganizing downstairs. The handrail is currently being refinished before installation, and the hold bar suggestion is a good one. We appreciate the feedback!

I reserved the GartzBarn Guest Room for my son Gus when he visited Evanston to do a music audition at Northwestern University. Sue responded promptly to my questions and made me feel comfortable about my son's stay. Gus enjoyed his night in Evanston, said Sue and her family were very welcoming and nice and that the guest room was quite comfortable. If Gus ends up attending Northwestern, I now know a great place to stay.

At the risk of sounding corny, everything about my stay was lovely. Extremely cold temperatures outdoors, and a very natural and warmly welcoming environment and family indoors. Sue provided all the information before and during the stay anyone could have needed. This family was very accommodating, right down to removing the snow around my car after an overnight snow storm. I kind of hated to leave, so look forward to booking the guest room here again!

I felt welcome and welcomed by Sue and her husband (who I only saw briefly.) There was also some papers on the best with information and a map which was useful along with a drawer full of maps and bus pamphlets. The rooms was comfortable - great bed and nice amount of pillows. Nice to have my own bathroom. This is a quiet tree lined street close to the Metra and easy walking distance to the Central district of Evanston. The bathroom was nice - there were indeed toiletries so I didn't need to have shampoo or soap which was handy. Plenty of hot water and nice towels. Sue really knows what she's doing to make the time and place comfortable. I enjoyed talking with her the two times we were both there. The lock on the front door that allows for entry without a key was great - easy to use and unique for me (easy to remember code.) This was my first airbnb and I hope all the rest are this easy, comfortable and welcoming. I highly recommend GartzBarn!!

Another great weekend spent in the home of Howard, Sue and Isaac; this time for Northwestern Parents' Weekend. Very comfortable and convenient. Can't wait for the next trip to Evanston!
