We are a hip couple with one teenage son and a quiet, lovable, well-behaved dog. We live in a light-filled house in a gorgeous setting, and this listing is for an extra bedroom and private bath.

The Space

You will have your own unique key code for easy entry. You'll be in a private guest room on the second floor of our house. The guest room is quite clean and comfortable, with wood floors, a queen-size bed with lots of pillows (we have accommodated couples with one young child with a cozy single 2" thick mattress with comforter on the floor), antique dresser, nightstands, good reading lamps, closet with plenty of hangers, rocking chair, portable laptop desk, power strip for charging your electronics, tons of tourist brochures for the area, free high-speed wireless, a fan and AC when needed, and windows that open to our beautiful flower garden (or snowy garden!) on a quiet street. You'll have a carafe of fresh, filtered water and probably a small treat. You will have a private bathroom across the hall with tub/shower, basic toiletries. and windows overlooking the golf course.

Once you book with us, we send out a confirmation email including our address/contact info and docs detailing public transportation options from the airports. We've had lots of happy guests so check out our reviews, and email if you have any questions!

Guest Access

PLEASE NOTE: We are sorry, but we are currently unable to provide breakfast. We do provide access to coffee and tea in our kitchen. If we're here, we'll make it for you, and if we'll be otherwise occupied, we'll make sure you know where everything is. You are welcome to store leftovers in our refrigerator, but we do not offer kitchen use.

Our house is next to a beautiful public golf course, and you are welcome to enjoy our lovely deck with its quiet and peaceful view of the woods, 12th green, golfers, walkers, runners, dog walkers, cross-country skiers and various wildlife.

Interaction with Guests

Our own bedrooms and bathroom are on the same level as the guest room, but we keep doors closed and we're extremely respectful of guests' privacy needs. We're pretty busy and not at all intrusive, but we're happy to chat if we're around, have time, and you're into that!

The Neighborhood

Our house is in a great location in Evanston, which is the first town just north of Chicago on Lake Michigan. Evanston has Northwestern University and is vibrant and very urban (definitely not vanilla suburban) while also being green, quiet and peaceful. Northwestern University is here so there's lots of great culture.

We're walking distance to everything, including:

Public transportation (see Getting Around).

Public beaches, parks, arboretum and playgrounds. Excellent walking/running routes right out the door, through beautiful neighborhoods, beach/lakefront and parks.

Yoga studios and gyms.

Art museums.

Public library.

Baha'i Temple.

Evanston cafes and fabulous restaurants, all kinds of shopping and tons of grocery options nearby including FoodStuffs (gourmet food), Whole Foods, Dominick's, Jewel, Great Harvest Bread, Homemade Pizza, etc.

Northwestern University and all it has to offer (come for a football game!).

Getting around

There are multiple public transportation options from O'Hare and Midway; information is provided on booking.

Once here, you'll be walking distance to public transportation (walk 2 blocks to the Metra, which is a 35 min train ride into Chicago and all it has to offer, or walk 4 blocks to the CTA, which is a 45 min train ride into Chicago. The Metra also goes north to north shore suburbs and attractions like Ravinia, Chicago Botanic Garden and more).

  • We enjoyed our stay at GartzBarn in Evanston this past weekend. The bed was comfortable for a good night's sleep and Howard was welcoming and very accommodating! Sue was out of town on business so we did not get to meet her. We enjoyed breakfast and chatting with with Howard both mornings. The view of the golf course from their kitchen is a bonus and Howard generously drove us into town one morning because he was going that way! We enjoyed their dog Lola, too.

  • This was a repeat visit to my favorite spot in Evanston! A lovely home with a lovely family! Always a pleasure to stay there!

  • We have thoroughly enjoyed our three nights stay with the Gartzman family and have admired the relaxed but very efficient way in which Sue and Howard combine the care for their guests with their own busy life. That made us feel real welcome. The room and private bathroom are comfortable, breakfasts were lovely and it was just nice to get to know Sue and Howard. Great location between NorthWestern and the center of Evanston.

  • This was my first experience with airbnb and I was so impressed! Lovely home, super kind and friendly hosts (Sue, Howard and Isaac). I may never stay in a hotel again!

  • A delightful experience. Nice and close to the Bahá'í House of Worship - 5 minutes by car - one stop by train, and probably only 10 minutes by bike or half an hour to walk, so highly recommended for any Bahá'í who has visiting or volunteering at the temple. Sue, Howard and Isaac were great hosts, and Sue provided a nice variety of breakfasts. Room was cosy and the bed comfortable, and lots of drawer and cupboard space. Also a nice collection of pamphlets about Chicago and surrounds in the top draw.

    Highly recommended!

  • The Gartzmans are terrific and friendly hosts, and Sue is super-responsive to questions in advance of arrival. The small guest room is perfectly comfortable (as is the bed), with good light and its own private bath across the hall. Breakfast included lox & bagels, fresh fruit, and delicious latte. The location is ideal for visiting Ravinia, Writers Theatre (Glencoe), or Space (Evanston); the UP North Metra line stops just a couple of blocks away at Central Avenue. Lake Michigian and the north end of the Northwestern University campus are also just a short walk away.

  • Staying at GartzBarn is like staying with long lost relations that you actually like! It's comfortable, homey, filled with interesting art and just feels right. The house is on a lovely street, conveniently situated in Evanston, and the room and private bath are perfect. The entire family is friendly and helpful and they genuinely seems to enjoy chatting with their guests (us) and helping us enjoy our stay.

  • In the chilly Chicago winter, we found a cozy home base with Sue and Howard. Their house is lovely, the bed and bedroom so comfortable, Sue's cooked breakfasts hearty and delicious. Easy walking (even in the snow) to both CTA and Metra trains.
Highly recommend this easygoing and friendly house and hosts!

  • We had such a wonderful time staying with Sue and her family. From the moment we arrived at their place to the moment we left for our next destination, the Gartzman family showered us with their warm hospitality! They provided very helpful advice and suggestions as to where we could go and what we could do while in Chicago. The room provided was very clean and the bed very comfortable. Sue provided a delicious breakfast every morning, served with fresh fruit, orange juice and great tasting coffee! I was waiting on mail to arrive for me prior to my departure from Chicago, however it did not arrive in time. Sue went above and beyond and kindly offered to send it to my home address once it had arrived at her place. If you're looking for somewhere to stay while you're in Chicago that provides comfort, delicious food, and a friendly atmosphere, look no further. Our stay with the Gartzman's was truly a home away from home! :)

  • If you are in need of lodging in Evanston, Illinois, the GartzBarn Guest Room is a wonderful place to stay. We just returned from 3 nights at the lovely home of Sue, Howard and Isaac.

The charming old house is located in a great neighborhood and backs up to a park on two sides so there is a beautiful view and it's very quiet. The guest room has everything you need -- very comfortable bed (and I have a bed back, so I appreciate a good bed) and pillows, tables on either side of the bed - each with a light, a dresser, an empty closet with lots of hangers, a carafe of water with glasses and great wifi.

The private bath is just down the hall and had plenty of towels, hot water, blow dryer and lotion, shampoo, etc. You also have a view of the park.

Although the bedrooms are all upstairs, we never saw anyone up there, so it feels very private.

    Everything was spotless.

Sue made great coffee for us each morning, but we asked for no breakfast since we were there over the Thanksgiving weekend and did not need more food.

Sue and Howard were completely charming, made us feel right at home. They visited with us just the right amount.

We had a scheduling snafu at the last minute and Sue and Howard were understanding and gracious. From the minute we made the reservation until we left, we had a great experience.

Five stars! Thanks Sue and Howard!
