Come experience typical Andean village life in this small picturesque town, located mid-way between the city of Cusco and the Sacred Valley. Huarocondo is an ideal place to relax and enjoy nature, with quiet evenings and many trails and roads to hike
Why just visit a local village when you can stay in one
GringoWasi is set in a truly typical Andean village, just 30 minutes outside of Cusco, which as yet, has not been influenced by tourism. In our town of Huarocondo life goes on much as it has for the last 100 years, family’s take their animals out to the fields in the morning and bring them back in in the evening, many of the locals still cook over wood fires, and many of the fields are still plowed by pulling wooden plows with bulls, or even by hand. In the spring you will see fields being planted and in the fall it is harvest time, festivals are also common and are held to celebrate life and to pay respect to the various Saints and Virgins, and not to impress the tourists.
The people of Huarocondo are also very friendly, being a small community everyone knows everyone else and even our guests are considered to be part of the community while they are here, on one occasion we even had a couple report that they were invited into a wedding reception and fed lunch, even though they were foreigners. We have had guests join locals in doing their daily duties like separating Quinoa from the chaff and we are still close enough to many of the archeological sites to be a convenient home base to explore the area.
We work with a local tour agency and several drivers so we can easily arrange tours, either group or private and our area offers a variety of trails and roads to hike. Hikes in the area can range from easy and flat to all uphill, and there are even a few archeological sites you can hike to.
So if you are looking for a truly unspoiled local town to use as a home base, as a place to acclimate before doing a trek, or just to relax and unwind after a trek, this is the place. You won’t find any tourist items here, no souvenir stands or shops, just local stores and shops selling what the people of Huarocondo need, but don’t just take our word for it, here are a few samples of some Trip Advisor review that past guests have left.
“Huarocondo isn`t at all touristy and it was good to sit in the square eating the roast pork it´s famed for while watching village life go by”
“Huarocondo is a beautiful town, traditional and quiet, the sort of place you need if you want to check out what life in the Andes is really like”
“Huarocondo is not Cusco, but that's a good thing as it is unspoiled by trappings of a tourist town”
“The town of Huarocondo was relaxing. It was interesting to see a small town that wasn't touched by tourism”
Currently we are the only lodging available in Huarocondo and with only 5 rooms, we have created little impact on the local community, as such everything you will experience here is truly authentic, add to this the picturesque scenery and the quiet evenings and it is the perfect place to call home while visiting the Cusco region.
So book now, come and experience true local Andean life and join our ever expanding family, which currently encompasses 50 countries. We look forward to meeting you soon.

Interaction with Guests
We live here at the property so you will most likely see us a lot, we always try and have dinner at the same time so that any guests wanting to, can join us for dinner. Breakfasts are a little different as, different guests need to leave at different times, depending on their schedules. Additionally, anytime we are not away transporting or taking guests on tours, we are here at the property.
Huarocondo is a small rural town set in an agricultural valley, located mid-way between Cusco and the Sacred Valley, with the main attraction being the beauty, peace and tranquility. There are plenty of roads and trails for hiking and the largest lake in the Cusco region is just 11.5 km to the North East. Additionally there are two archeological sites close by, Andenes Zurite which is 5.6 km to the south and the trail to Wata is 5.5 km to the North West. The property is located just one block from the Huarocondo main Plaza where you can sample the local specialty of lechon or roast pig, and there is also a large colonial church on the main plaza that houses several paintings, that we have been told, are more valuable than the ones in the cathedral in Cusco.
There are a few options for transportation in and out of town, depending on where you want to go. The first and easiest is for us to arrange a car and driver for you; this can be almost any time of day or night, and services range from basic transportation to full day tours.
There is also public transportation available in and out of town by either colectivos or buses. These start about 5:30am and will continue until either 6:30pm or 9:00pm depending on the route.
Other Things to Note

We do our best to anticipate our guest’s needs but not all guests are the same, so don’t be afraid to ask.
We also send out a list of travel tips and other useful information after you have booked, sometimes this information will end up in your junk folder, so if you have booked with us, please check your junk folder after making the booking for additional information.

What can I say -- so many great stories! Our stay at Gringo Wasi was amazing. Huarocondo is a small, quiet town, but it's only a 20 min drive from Incan ruins, local markets, and an easy connection to other popular sites via a colectivo (local bus). I did not meet Lyle and Liliana because they were traveling but the caretaker in their absence, Kelly, was an outstanding host. More than a host, she was a tour guide, a cook, and a concierge. She quickly felt like a good friend. Even her toddler being present added charm to our stay. The rooms were very clean. No bells and whistles. Just everything you need. The breakfast was hardy and the dinners were delicious. Kelly also went the extra mile to make a birthday cake upon request - not an easy feat in a place where cake essentials are in short supply. The water in our room went out a couple of times and the there's no sound proofing so everything is audible. But guess what? None of that mattered. We enjoyed our stay so much, we extended it two nights just to stay a full week. All in all, Gringo Wasi is a highly recommended stay to experience true Andean culture and wonderful people during your trip to Peru.
Awesome experience! Kelly was an amazing host. Can't wait to visit again.
I stayed at gringo wasi for ten nights and thoroughly enjoyed my time there.
The town and surrounding country were interesting and devoid of touristic trivia. The presence of livestock walking through the narrow streets in the town as families took them to and from their homes to the outlying fields each morning and evening was a great experience. Locals were interested in conversation with myself and other guests to find out about us and to talk about their community and good local walks .
The hostel likewise was most welcoming. Lyle and Lily were really good hosts being relaxed and friendly but also conscientious in ensuring everything was in (website hidden) example being the personal attention given to preparing morning and evening meals and sharing these with guests.
My bedroom was clean and very comfortable with good quality furniture and a good ensuite shower.
I appreceated my time at gringo wasi and recommend it to others who are looking for a friendly, comfortable and authentic small town experience.
Beautiful, comfy and hospitable BnB away from the hubbub. Lyle and Lily are very communicative and helpful with planning activities and transportation. Down bedding, hot showers, Direct TV, internet, gorgeous views. Very agricultural population, you will see and hear sheep, cows, and donkeys trotting down the cobble stone street, oh and dogs, lots of dogs. As it is remote, you need to be prepared for taking local transportation, or paying for day trips. Awesome value! Dinner for $4 and delicious breakfast...ask for the French Toast. Loved the experience, but one neighbor does listen to the radio early in the morning.
I was supposed to stay here only 3days, but i extent my stay here more. Everything was so nice. Especially lyle and lily were sweet hearted :) thanks again!
before i go to gringowasi, i was worried about the location.
but after staying here, i feel that that's perfect location if you wanna feel being real peruvian :)
i enjoyed the 'special experience' to take collectivo from cuzco.
and it's perfect location for sacred valley tour.
lyle and lily offer tours program, peruvian dinner and pick up service in a resonable price.
i really enjoyed staying gringowasi :)
just one thing is, when others were taking shower at the same time, hot water is not supplied well.
except that, everything was perfect!
Thanks again :)
Sorry to hear about the hot water problems that you had, and while I am not sure what the actual problem was, I don’t believe it was connected with other guests showering as each bathroom has its own water heater. Thank you for notifying us of this, the system has been checked and is currently operating correctly, and we will continue to monitor and check for any problems.
We enjoyed having you here with us and would like to thank you again for sharing the food and drink from your home country with us. We are glad to hear that you enjoyed your time here with us and we would welcome you back anytime.
Staying with Lyle and Lily is sure to put a smile on your face. Sure they're in business to make a living, but more than that they genuinely want you to have a fun, safe and smooth sailing time while staying with them, and it shows. They picked me up at the airport, gave me fascinating insights on the area, and generally made sure that every single thing worked perfectly for me during my visit. The rooms are quite comfortable and feature beautiful western-style bathrooms, satellite tv, and good WiFi. Everything they offer is reasonably priced, and for the money you are unlikely to do better in the entire Cusco region. I'd recommend staying with them without hesitation, and Lyle and Lily are exactly the kind of people you want to meet during your vacation - honest, genuine, kind, and super good vibes. Cheers Lyle and Lily and thanks again!
