The Space

GringoWasi is a unique bed and breakfast offering a quiet small town experience just 30 min. from Cusco, perfect for relaxing and refueling. Come and enjoy our refurbished and spacious century old traditional adobe home in Huarocondo, conveniently located between Cusco and Ollantaytambo. This small town is nestled in a beautiful valley with a population of approximately 5,000 people, Huarocondo provides a welcomed change of pace for travelers looking to escape the tourist vibe of Cusco and enjoy a peaceful night’s rest.

The property is owned and operated by Lyle & Lily an American/Peruvian couple that relocated to the Cusco region to operate a bed and breakfast. Lyle is originally from southern California and most recently lived in Las Vegas; Lily is originally from Lima, Peru and lived in the US for 12 years. The two met in Las Vegas in 2005, fell in love and were married not long after. Shortly after their first trip together to Lily’s home country of Peru, the two started to make plans to move there permanently. In early 2012 the couple took a trip to Cusco and purchased the property with the intention of converting it into a bed and breakfast now known as “GringoWasi”. The name was chosen as a way to pay respect to the local culture; most of the population of Huarocondo still speaks their native language Quechua, Wasi being a Quechua word for house means the name can be translated to “Gringo’s House”.

GringoWasi offers a large great room for relaxing, an inviting patio, separate dining room, 24 hr. hot water, DVD library for guest use and a smoke free environment. Guests can also enjoy complimentary Wi-Fi throughout the property, use of a computer, bag/luggage storage and calls to or from the US and Canada via our MagicJack.

At GringoWasi we also offer additional services for a reasonable fee, including laundry services, transportation, afternoon and evening meals, as well as tour services for our guests and would be happy to assist with all your travel plans, from your arrival in Lima to your departure. We work with several properties in Lima and other towns, as well as local tour operators and would be happy to assist you in booking your room in Lima, flight from Lima to Cusco and any desired tours or other lodgings needed. Additionally we offer private and personalized back road adventure tours to some of the local sites on a limited basis. Please contact us in advance if you are interested in a private tour as they tend to book quick. Tour options include Machu Picchu, Sacred Valley, Inca Trail, Moray, paragliding, zip lines and bungee jumping to name a few.

If you are looking for a little local excitement we suggest visiting in November when there are two separate festivals, one celebrating the founding of the city and the other a celebration of roast pig or “Lechon”. The largest local festival is the festival of the Virgin del Carmen, this festival runs for 5 days and starts on July 15th. June is also an exciting time as this is when the Cusco region celebrates Inti Raymi, the biggest festival in the area and one of the busiest times to visit Cusco.

This spacious room features one double and one single bed, a table with two small chairs, one larger chair for relaxing, night stands, small armoire, towels, linens, down comforters, locally handcrafted décor, comfortable mattresses, lockable storage, 32” LCD television with satellite and DVD player, hair dryer and a private bath room with shower. A full breakfast is included with your room and may include (subject to availability) fresh baked breads, fruit, ham, cheeses, jams, eggs, fruit juice, coffee, and teas. Clock Radio i-Pod docks are also available upon request.

Guest Access

Guests will have access to the main/shared room where we have areas for sitting and relaxing as well as a TV/DVD and laptop computer. Guests also have 24 hour access to the dining room, with access to filtered drinking water coffee and tea.

Interaction with Guests

We live here at the property so you will most likely see us a lot, we always try and have dinner at the same time so that any guests wanting to, can join us for dinner. Breakfasts are a little different as, different guests need to leave at different times, depending on their schedules. Additionally, anytime we are not away transporting or taking guests on tours, we are here at the property.

The Neighborhood

Huarocondo is a small rural town set in an agricultural valley, located mid-way between Cusco and the Sacred Valley, with the main attraction being the beauty, peace and tranquility. There are plenty of roads and trails for hiking and the largest lake in the Cusco region is just 11.5 km to the North East. Additionally there are two archeological sites close by, Andenes Zurite which is 5.6 km to the south and the trail to Wata is 5.5 km to the North West. The property is located just one block from the Huarocondo main Plaza where you can sample the local specialty of lechon or roast pig, and there is also a large colonial church on the main plaza that houses several paintings, that we have been told, are more valuable than the ones in the cathedral in Cusco.

Getting around

There are a few options for transportation in and out of town, depending on where you want to go. The first and easiest is for us to arrange a car and driver for you; this can be almost any time of day or night, and services range from basic transportation to full day tours.

There is also public transportation available in and out of town by either colectivos or buses. These start about 5:30am and will continue until either 6:30pm or 9:00pm depending on the route.

Other Things to Note

Our goal here at GringoWasi is that you to enjoy your vacation to the fullest, if you have any questions or need something, please don’t hesitate to ask. Just because we don’t “offer” something, doesn’t mean it is not within our ability to provide. We do our best to anticipate our guest’s needs but not all guests are the same, so don’t be afraid to ask.

We also send out a list of travel tips and other useful information after you have booked, sometimes this information will end up in your junk folder, so if you have booked with us, please check your junk folder after making the booking for additional information.

  • Beautiful, comfy and hospitable BnB away from the hubbub. Lyle and Lily are very communicative and helpful with planning activities and transportation. Down bedding, hot showers, Direct TV, internet, gorgeous views. Very agricultural population, you will see and hear sheep, cows, and donkeys trotting down the cobble stone street, oh and dogs, lots of dogs. As it is remote, you need to be prepared for taking local transportation, or paying for day trips. Awesome value! Dinner for $4 and delicious breakfast...ask for the French Toast. Loved the experience, but one neighbor does listen to the radio early in the morning.

  • before i go to gringowasi, i was worried about the location.
but after staying here, i feel that that's perfect location if you wanna feel being real peruvian :)
i enjoyed the 'special experience' to take collectivo from cuzco.
and it's perfect location for sacred valley tour.

lyle and lily offer tours program, peruvian dinner and pick up service in a resonable price.
i really enjoyed staying gringowasi :)

just one thing is, when others were taking shower at the same time, hot water is not supplied well.

    except that, everything was perfect!
    Thanks again :)

    Response from Lyle:

Sorry to hear about the hot water problems that you had, and while I am not sure what the actual problem was, I don’t believe it was connected with other guests showering as each bathroom has its own water heater. Thank you for notifying us of this, the system has been checked and is currently operating correctly, and we will continue to monitor and check for any problems.

We enjoyed having you here with us and would like to thank you again for sharing the food and drink from your home country with us. We are glad to hear that you enjoyed your time here with us and we would welcome you back anytime.

  • Staying with Lyle and Lily is sure to put a smile on your face. Sure they're in business to make a living, but more than that they genuinely want you to have a fun, safe and smooth sailing time while staying with them, and it shows. They picked me up at the airport, gave me fascinating insights on the area, and generally made sure that every single thing worked perfectly for me during my visit. The rooms are quite comfortable and feature beautiful western-style bathrooms, satellite tv, and good WiFi. Everything they offer is reasonably priced, and for the money you are unlikely to do better in the entire Cusco region. I'd recommend staying with them without hesitation, and Lyle and Lily are exactly the kind of people you want to meet during your vacation - honest, genuine, kind, and super good vibes. Cheers Lyle and Lily and thanks again!

  • Although our initial aim was staying in Cusco and we arrived to GringoWasi by chance, we could not have been happier to know Lyle and Lily and the Huarocondo town.

The place is an actual local, traditional town with a tourist rate so low children laugh and point at you when you walk by, and where farmers walking up or down the mountains with their sheep or donkeys mark the time of day.

The Bnb is comfortable and pleasant (awesome bed and pillows!) and Lyle and Lily are friendly and warm. The private tour they offer on the Sacred Valley is great value, this was my second time in Peru and I enjoyed the ride more than the inpersonal tourist buses I took in the past.

Highly recommended! Especially for those looking authentic, off the beaten path experiences.

  • We reserved two nights with Lyle and Lili. The service they provide is so outstanding that we have stayed here for six nights. Even before we arrived, I could tell by their prompt, friendly, accurate information via email that we would enjoy our stay at Gringowasi. Our room is spacious, with two beds - a double and a twin, a table and two chairs by a sunny window, plenty of storage in night tables, chest of drawers and an armoire with mirror (this is especially luxurious after living out of suitcases on a long trip). And the private bath provides all we need - plenty of hot water, even a hair dryer. Breakfast is included, and lunches and dinners are available at a very reasonable price. Lili is a very good cook; since she is native Peruvian, we have enjoyed some wonderful authentic dishes. But the best service they provided is guided tours to any of the areas of interest in Cusco and the Sacred Valley, and even off-the-beaten-path tours through breathtaking scenery of rural Peru. The half day or full day tours are an exceptional value. To have a private tour in a comfortable car with two guides (English and Spanish speakers) who are flexible in taking care of a traveler's needs and interests is an unbeatable bargain.
