Backyard Cottage 'Treehouse' studio

Cabin - Entire home/apt · Bonita Avenue, Berkeley, CA 94709, United States

The Space

***For the week of January 12th-17th, 2014, I am lowering the price on the suite for someone who would like to stay all our most of the week. We will be away and need someone to care for our mostly outdoor cat! He needs feeding and occasional attention, but there's no litterbox to take care of.***

This top floor cottage studio is nestled in the backyard of a North Berkeley character home. Apple and fig trees fill the yard, birds buzz past the windows, and light fills the space all day long. Studio is about 330 square feet, with small separate kitchen, bath with shower (sorry, no tub!), and small balcony with seating area. There's a very comfortable double/full bed with organic cotton bedding, and the space is filled with original art inspired or made with natural objects.

The property is in a great and highly walkable location. Although the view is mostly of trees and gardens, it's within 3 blocks of Berkeley's famous 'gourmet ghetto' and local buses; 10 minute walk to UC campus, or downtown Berkeley and BART (regional transit) to San Francisco; one block from beautiful bike route that traverses city; and only 15 minute drive from Tilden Park (with wonderful trails, swimming lake, golf, and other attractions there). If you want to soak, the Berkeley Sauna has beautiful redwood tubs just a few blocks away, and the immediate area is filled with amazing restaurants, shops, bookstores, galleries, and parks.

This is a wonderful place to land in one of the most appealing areas of Berkeley. Guests are welcome to browse and borrow (while staying) from the book collection, including novels in English and Spanish, poetry, myths and childrens' stories, non-fiction including psychology, natural healing, and buddhism. There is a copy of Jung's Red Book you can take a look at if you promise to be careful! Art supplies can also be made available to those who are interested.

Please note - there is no wifi in the suite. This is made clear in the 'amenities' section but I've still had people be surprised! If internet is really important to you, let me know and we can arrange to get you access for a small extra fee. For those who need parking, I have day passes I can offer for a small fee.

  • Normandy is a wonderful host! She has a very sweet and intriguing tree house studio, with a lovely view and an artistic flare. It was nice and quiet, and we felt very safe in her neighborhood. Other than the beautiful view of the tree outside, my other favorite aspect was the great water pressure in the shower.
She really communicates well and prepares for the guests stay, and knows how to make you feel at home. The studio is in a great location, she has soft and cuddly blankets for a nice read on her cozy couch, and again...its quiet! :) A very positive experience overall.

  • My stay in Normandy's space was truly cozy and ideal for my personal preferences. Normandy supplied great details and instructions via e-mail and was great with communicating. Her place is located within walking distance to many Berkeley features, and is in a neighborhood that allows you to get away and find a quite place.
If you bring a car, be aware of parking restrictions. Though many things are walkable, I found I needed to take my car with me often to find a space to leave it for the daytime parking hours.
Other than that, which is workable, a lovely space and a gracious individual. Thank you Normandy!

  • Normandy's treehouse is an absolutely peaceful retreat. A genuine opportunity to get away from it all whilst still being able to travel on foot to areas of interest. My partner and I enjoyed the sunny tranquility of the studio, you really feel like you are surrounded by trees. The neighbors were quiet, warm and welcoming, and the facilities were very clean. Mornings were best spent on the sunny porch after a quick trip to Cheese Board for some fresh bread and hot coffee. Downtown Berkeley is in easy walking distance as is Solano Avenue. My only wish is that we didn't have to leave after a week! We hope to stay a little longer next time. Thanks so much Normandy for creating and sharing such a wonderful space.

  • Normandy's studio in the trees was charming and the perfect place for us to stay while in Berkeley. We didn't get a chance to meet her but instructions were provided by e-mail. The studio is indeed in a great neighborhood.

  • Normandy's little studio was perfect! Comfy bed and great shower pressure. What more can you ask? It's also situated right near lots of restaurant options. (We recommend The Cheese Board for Pizza, Platano for Salvadorian, and Anh Hong for Vietnamese.) Thank you, Normandy! I hope we'll be back.

  • The studio was a wonderful place to stay! Normandy definitely has a skill with interior design. The space had really interesting art. The place was very quiet. Had a nice, fully equipped kitchen. And a great location. Would love to rent the space again.

  • We had a magical time at the treehouse. I loved the energy of the space, it felt like we walked into an extension of the embodiment journey that we came to california to explore! There was a lovely sense of trust an love emanating from the walls. and such good books! i just wanted to chill out and read:) Sadly we didn't get to meet Normandy, but she was very responsive to our texts and calls and we felt very hosted! Her neighbors were all friendly and open. wish we could've stayed longer.

  • Normandy's place was a great, quiet and peaceful place to relax after a busy day. It was very clean and comfortable. She was extremely helpful in guiding me in as it was dark when i arrived. We had an opportunity to meet up briefly and she is a very warm and friendly host. I would recommend her place without reservation. The only thing I missed was wifi accessability as I was trying to do some work while there. But it gave me the opportunity to read and write instead. Thanks Normandy!

  • Place is very cute, clean, and perfectly located in Berkley. Normandy, who I never met, is very quick to respond and seemed extremely nice and relaxed. The only reason I didn't give 5 stars is because there is no Wi-Fi. It's sort of a necessity these days so was a little disappointed but had a great stay nonetheless. Highly recommend.

  • Normandy's treehouse suite was everything I hoped it would be, and more. Her home has a light, subtle peaceful quality. What a simple, lovely way to live. A comfy bed, warm showers, and plenty of woodland friends completed our visit. Though we didn't meet, Normandy's personality slowly presented itself through her thoughtful decor and natural art. I am a fan of this gal named Normandy, and would not only happily stay in her cottage again, but would love to know the lady herself.

About
I'm a therapist, dancer, and love spending time in nature. For me, Berkeley is the ideal place to live in a vibrant community, yet still have lots of open space nearby. I travel a lot myself and know how important it is to find the right place to land, so I love hosting people and creating a welcoming environment for guests. My hope is that staying at my place helps people to have the most comfortable, relaxing, and nurturing experience of Berkeley possible.
