Top floor garden cottage with view, separate kitchen, and bath. Cozy, quiet, and comfortable. Good for cat lovers! We are going away for holidays so prefer one renter for the week who is willing to look after cat.
This top floor cottage studio is nestled in the backyard of a North Berkeley character home. Apple and fig trees fill the yard, birds buzz past the windows, and light fills the space all day long. Studio is about 330 square feet, with small separate kitchen, bath with shower (sorry, no tub!), and small balcony. There's a very comfortable double/full bed with organic cotton bedding, and the space is filled with original art inspired or made with natural objects.
There is a friendly, mostly outdoor cat that lives here and will be very interested in coming inside. Most of the time there is someone around feeding and loving him so there's no obligation to worry about him, but if you're allergic to cats this is probably not the space for you! If you love cats and want to spend time with him, so much the better. Occasionally we ask guests to give him food and water if we are out of town.
The property is in a great and highly walkable location. Although the view is mostly of trees and gardens, it's within 3 blocks of Berkeley's famous 'gourmet ghetto' and local buses; 10 minute walk to UC campus, or downtown Berkeley and BART (regional transit) to San Francisco; one block from beautiful bike route that traverses city; and only 15 minute drive from Tilden Park (with wonderful trails, swimming lake, golf, and other attractions there). If you want to soak, the Berkeley Sauna has beautiful redwood tubs just a few blocks away, and the immediate area is filled with amazing restaurants, shops, bookstores, galleries, and parks.
This is a wonderful place to land in one of the most appealing areas of Berkeley. Guests are welcome to browse and borrow (while staying) from the book collection, including novels in English and Spanish, poetry, myths and childrens' stories, non-fiction including psychology, natural healing, and buddhism. There is a copy of Jung's Red Book you can take a look at if you promise to be careful! Art supplies can also be made available to those who are interested.
Please note - there is no wifi in the suite. This is made clear in the 'amenities' section but I've still had people be surprised! If internet is really important to you, let me know and we can arrange to get you access for a small extra fee. For those who need parking, I have day passes I can offer for a small fee.
Garden, full private kitchen and bathroom, deck, views
Interaction with Guests
The suite is self contained so our only interactions are in getting you settled and taking care of any problems that arise.
This is a highly walkable neighborhood with tons of options for eating out (the 'gourmet ghetto') and shopping.
15 minute walk from BART, which will take you to the airport, into San Francisco, Oakland, and throughout the East Bay. Two blocks from bus routes and one block from major North-South and East-West bike routes
Other Things to Note
There's a very handsome outdoor cat named Milo who calls this place home. For the holidays, we would prefer to have one renter while we are gone who is comfortable with cats.
Shoes off in the house! It's a great space and we hope you treat it as such. :)
Neighborhood was great and easy walking distance to BART as well as many great restaurants - it's called the Gourmet Ghetto for a reason. Good communication from the host.

even we had only one night it felt like a cosy and warm place in which you could see the heart of the owner in the small lovely details that were in it.
would love to get back there one day.
thanks normandy for all!
This location is perfect for anyone hoping to be close to the Berkeley campus, but wants something tucked away and quiet. My wife and I actually spent a lot of time in San Francisco during the stay, which is easily accessible via the BART. Great value!
Normandy is a wonderful host! She has a very sweet and intriguing tree house studio, with a lovely view and an artistic flare. It was nice and quiet, and we felt very safe in her neighborhood. Other than the beautiful view of the tree outside, my other favorite aspect was the great water pressure in the shower.
She really communicates well and prepares for the guests stay, and knows how to make you feel at home. The studio is in a great location, she has soft and cuddly blankets for a nice read on her cozy couch, and again...its quiet! :) A very positive experience overall.
My stay in Normandy's space was truly cozy and ideal for my personal preferences. Normandy supplied great details and instructions via e-mail and was great with communicating. Her place is located within walking distance to many Berkeley features, and is in a neighborhood that allows you to get away and find a quite place.
If you bring a car, be aware of parking restrictions. Though many things are walkable, I found I needed to take my car with me often to find a space to leave it for the daytime parking hours.
Other than that, which is workable, a lovely space and a gracious individual. Thank you Normandy!
I'm a therapist, dancer, and love spending time in nature. For me, Berkeley is the ideal place to live in a vibrant community, yet still have lots of open space nearby.
I travel a lot myself and know how important it is to find the right place to land, so I love hosting people and creating a welcoming environment for guests. My hope is that staying at my place helps people to have the most comfortable, relaxing, and nurturing experience of Berkeley possible.
