The Space

Come stay at this fully refurbished 100 year old, wooden farmhouse on a working coffee farm in the beautiful Turrialba region of Costa Rica. This property is ideal for relaxing, enjoying nature, or for birdwatching.

Enjoy great views of Turrialba Volcano or watch as the dairy cows graze in the pastures across the unpaved lane. Take a walk through the beautifully dense tropical gardens or visit the coffee, banana and passion fruit plantations.

Turn off your cell phone, close the wooden shutters on the windows, and sleep in perfect country darkness. In the morning, enjoy complimentary Los Titos farm grown morning coffee. Savor seasonal tropical fruits by the pool and relax in the sauna or hammocks.

The Turrialba region also offers more active pursuits. The best white water rafting in the country is at nearby Pacuare River (in top 10 in the world, according to Outdoor Magazine), with pickup and return at the farm. Other tours include hiking near active Turrialba Volcano, horseback riding through the CATIE botanical preserve, coffee tours, canopy/zip lining, Tarzan swing, Guayabo archeological park, a snake farm, and more.

You have the newly refurbished 200 (website hidden). (1600 sq.ft.) house to yourself. Special care to preserve the original character and ambiance of the house was taken while updating the 2 full bathrooms with abundant hot water and modern plumbing, and in rebuilding the large, completely equipped kitchen, including dishwasher and microwave. Living room, dining room and bedrooms retain the original high wooden ceilings and floors, constructed from uneven width wooden planks. 3 bedrooms sleep 5 people. Large master bedroom (4x4.4 mts / 13x14 ½ ft) has king size bed, (attached twin beds with bed bridge - which can be separated upon prior request), second bedroom (2.4x3.25 mts / 8x11 ft ) with queen size bed, and a third smaller bedroom (2.4x3 mts / 8x10 ft) with one twin size bed. If necessary, a queen sleeper sofa in the living room can sleep an additional 2 people. Turn off your cell phone, close the wooden shutters on the windows, and sleep in perfect country darkness until the rooster wakes you in the morning to enjoy your complimentary Los Titos farm grown morning coffee. You aren’t taking a vacation in order to make beds and sweep up every day, so daily (weekdays) cleaning service is included.

A tropical garden, developed over two generations, surrounds the house. And in the orchid garden, when in season, you can see up to 20 different species in bloom. A short forest trail provides your own private tropical botanical garden tour with multiple tropical plants and trees, and benches along the way to sit and birdwatch. If you prefer, lie in a hammock in the shade watching the dozens of bird species that frequent the garden and bird feeders all year long, or the sloth family that lives in the trees around the house. You’re likely to see them almost year round.

Seasonally available tropical produce from the farm include guanabana, passion fruit, plantains, cassava, Kalamanzi lemons, Tamarillo (tree tomatoes), and dehydrated miniature bananas. You are welcome to visit the coffee plantation, and during harvest season (Aug-Nov) you can grab a basket and pick coffee alongside the local residents. The farm manager and his family also live nearby on the farm, so local knowledge is always available.

Other included features:
Satellite TV (although you probably won’t want to turn it on).

Private sauna and outdoor pool.
Back terrace and adjacent pergola.

Outdoor gas grill.
Free washer and dryer in nearby building.

  • Though I've been an Airbnb host for nearly a year, this was my first experience as a guest. A what a wonderful way to start!!
Our family visit to Adela's Farmhouse far exceeded our expectations. The house is gorgeous and comfortable and the grounds are exquisite. Ramon the caretaker and Miriam the housekeeper are lovely people and super helpful with any request we had.
When we arrived, there was a fresh pineapple pie waiting for us and Ramon kept bringing us goodies from the farm throughout our stay.
We were a family of 7 and fit very comfortably. My father said that the shower was the best of his life. The kitchen is very very well stocked and we made good use of it, preparing 3 large meals while we were there.
The pool, the hammocks, the trails, the birds, the cows grazing across the way, the sloth with baby up in the tree....we didn't leave the house for two whole days and kept ourselves very well entertained!
But if we had chosen to leave the house, there is plenty to do in the region- from white water rafting to a world class serpentarium.
Adela so graciously offered to drive my husband up to the house from San Jose and is a very nice, attentive and caring person. Though she wasn't there while we were, she checked in on us and made herself available to all questions and concerns.
My entire family (grandparents through kids) highly recommend this house!!

About
I am an artist (see the paintings in the house) and a mom. I am Costa Rican and Swiss, but I've lived in Costa Rica all my life. I manage my parents coffee farm; they recently moved back to Switzerland for health reasons and no longer live on the farm. My home is about 2 hours away from the farm, but there's plenty of help around and I'm always available by phone. I enjoy entertaining and meeting people from around the world, and I look forward to having you as our guest! I enjoy sharing my enthusiasm for the natural wonders of Turrialba area.
