Garden apartment near Montmartre

Apartment - Entire home/apt · Villa Poissonnière, Paris, Île-de-France 75018, France

Our sunny apartment is located in a cobblestone private pedestrian street, just a 10-minute walk from the famous Sacré Coeur basilica (as seen from the kitchen window!). Easy access to all of Paris's many attractions. Continental breakfast included.

The Space

The sunny, spacious living room doubles as a bedroom, with a queen-size bed (140cm x 200cm). You can enjoy the view of the lush garden from the living room, or of the Sacré Coeur from the kitchen. The apartment is ideal for a couple, but can easily accommodate three people (there is a fold-out single bed in addition to the double bed).

The apartment offers broadband WiFi access, cable television (over 200 French and international channels, including BBC World News and CNN), a DVD/Blu-ray player, stereo, dock for iPhones/iPods and telephone line with unlimited calls to the US, Canada and most of Europe (please check with us for specific destinations as there will be an extra charge for international calls outside of the destinations covered by our telephone plan).

The kitchen is equipped with a stove, microwave, toaster, dishwasher, espresso-maker, coffee machine, cooking utensils and crockery. Please note: there is no oven.

There is a combined washer/dryer in the apartment, but please note that the dryer is not as effective as a standalone machine. There is also an electric towel drying rack, as well as a regular drying rack in the apartment.

Before your arrival, we will stock your fridge with everything you need for a continental breakfast (orange juice, yoghurt, butter, jam, milk, tea and coffee) and will bring you a fresh baguette and "viennoiseries" (your choice of croissant or pain au chocolat) each morning at 9. If you prefer to get an earlier start to the day, we can bring the bread and viennoiseries the evening before.

We are very child-friendly and will happily provide a travel cot, high chair and toys on request for those travelling with a baby or toddler.

Note to those who are allergic to cats: we do have one cat, but the apartment is self-contained and he cannot go in as the door is closed. Nevertheless it is possible that he does go in from time to time if the door is left open. Therefore, if you are strongly allergic, unfortunately our apartment may not be ideal for you.

If you have any questions, please don't hesitate to contact us.

Guest Access

The apartment is totally self-contained, with a living room/bedroom, kitchen and bathroom.

We always do our best to accommodate our guests' preferred arrival and departure times. However, we have had to set an "official" check-in and check-out times in order to manage back-to-back bookings. Generally speaking, check-in time is 2 p.m. on the arrival date. However, if no one is vacating the property the morning you arrive, it may be possible to check in before this time. Similarly, our official check-out time is 10 a.m, but if your flight or train departs later in the day, it is generally possible to store your luggage with us. Please consult us about your preferred check-in and check-out times at the time of your booking.

Interaction with Guests

We personally greet guests on arrival, and bring fresh bread and croissants (or pain au chocolat) to their doorstep each morning (or leave a bread basket in front of the door for guests who prefer not to be disturbed). We aim to be accessible but not intrusive.

The Neighborhood

Our neighbourhood is known as the Goutte d'Or and is the most cosmopolitan area in Paris. We love the many contrasts this neighbourhood offers, as well as the great restaurants and bars nearby.

Historically a working class neighbourhood with a predominantly immigrant population, there has been a large influx of "bobos" (bourgeois bohemians) over the last 10 years. Nevertheless, it remains an extremely diverse, densely populated area. A recent New York Times article describes the area as follows:

"The Goutte d’Or (“Drop of Gold”), an ethnic African and Arab stronghold within Barbès that was the setting for “L’Assommoir,” Émile Zola’s novel that portrayed the lives of alcoholic laborers. Belgians, Italians, Poles, Spaniards and Frenchmen migrated here first, then North African Arabs, and finally sub-Saharan Africans. It remains one of the most ethnically diverse parts of Paris... In recent years, Barbès’s location near Montmartre and lower-than-average Parisian real estate prices have attracted younger, hipper, professional residents. But you’ll also find grocery stores selling Moroccan spices, Indian teas and Cambodian rice in 50-pound sacks; abandoned fields transformed into collective vegetable gardens (including one with a field for playing boules). It is a travel destination for adventurers seeking a more hidden Paris.... "

In short, if you are looking to hobnob with a chic crowd, I would recommend that you continue your search! But if you want to discover a historically, sociologically and culturally rich neighbourhood that is central, yet off the beaten track, look no further. As the New York Times suggests: "the time to visit is now, while the cacophony of its competing cultures is still preserved. It will be a very different place in a decade."

The apartment itself is located in a private, pedestrian street: the greenery, quiet and birdsong are in sharp contrast to the hustle and bustle of the Paris streets outside the gates.

Getting around

The apartment's central location makes it easy to explore Paris. Montmartre and its famous Sacré Coeur basilica are just a 10-minute walk away. To venture further afield, the closest metro station is a two-minute walk away, and offers quick and easy transport to all of Paris' attractions. Numerous buses also stop in the immediate vicinity.

The apartment is within ten minutes' walk of Gare du Nord station which operates direct, high-speed services to London (Eurostar), Brussels (Thalys) and other cities in Germany, Holland and northern France. The Gare du Nord also offers direct train services to Paris’s two major airports, Roissy Charles de Gaulle and Orly.

For guests travelling by car, there are several parking garages located 2 minutes’ walk from the apartment.

The restaurants, bars and clubs of Montmartre are just a few minutes' walk away. All of Paris' top tourist destinations (the Louvre, Opera Garnier, Eiffel Tower, Notre Dame...) are a quick and easy metro ride away.

Other Things to Note

What makes our apartment unique is the complete peace and quiet - the sense that you are in a small village, although you are actually in one of Paris' busiest neighbourhoods.

  • We had a lovely stay at Sara's Garden apartment. It is located in a very diverse, busy area of Paris, but her apartment is quiet and very comfortable. It is very easy to get to a metro and train station.
She was very gracious and supplied pain au chocolat every morning! Thank you Sara!

  • Saras appartement is perfect for your stay in Paris!
It's cosy, clean and very comfortable and offers all the accomodations you need.

The pictures perfectly show how it looks like.

We spent 4 nights in this calm nest, the daily breakfast with fresh bread and croissant/pain au chocolat is the perfect beginning for a sightseeing-day in Paris.

Sara was very friendly and nice.
We highly recommend you to stay here.
    Merci Sara!

  • We had a wonderful long weekend staying in Sara's apartment. She was very welcoming on our arrival, showing us all amenities and letting us know that if we needed anything she was just upstairs (she lives in the same building as the apartment). In the event, my contact with her was through text message and she was always helpful and prompt in her responses. Sara seemed to be around most of the time, and was flexible when it came to our check-in and check-out times - always very helpful.

The apartment was lovely and very homely, a spacious big bedroom with desk and comfortable chair as well as a kitchen with a dishwasher, washer/dryer, and a view of the Sacre Coeur through the window.

What set Sara apart as a host were the little things, including:
    - breakfast (croissants and baguette) delivered to our door each morning, with butter, jam and yoghurts also supplied
    - a Nespresso machine in the kitchen, complete with a variety of capsules (as a side note, I hadn't tried Nespresso before but, as someone who likes good coffee, was pleasantly surprised at its quality)
    - some good recommendations on places to eat and drink, as well as a variety of books on Paris

The location of the apartment was very convenient for the Eurostar into Gare du Nord, and has good Metro connections (or alternatively a nice easy pleasant walk of circa 45 minutes to the Seine/Notre Dame, much less to Sacre Coeur and Montmartre). The gated lane that the apartment is on feels very safe and peaceful, but the immediate locale feels a little rougher. Having said that, we had no problems during our stay and it did not particularly bother us.

All in all I find it difficult to find fault or suggest improvement in Sara's hosting or her accommodation, and would definitely recommend her apartment for a stay in Paris.

  • We had a great time exploring Paris from Sara's apartment, it had everything we needed and was in a really good location. The apartment felt very peaceful compared to the busy local area. Would definitely recommend staying here!

  • The stay was great! I am used to Paris, a part of my family originates here and the place I chose was based on the location, close to my son's apartment. The price was very appropriate. The host was very graceful, helpful and her family lived just above in the house. We had all the necessities, including the fresh fantastic bakery goods, delivered every morning! The house is located in the private street, that locks on both ends and is very charming and safe. If you are coming in very late and being worried about the location of Barbesse, you can easily take a taxi to the gates for 3-4 blocks, slip in the locked gates very safely. I did not worry. I trust the people. The location of the guest apartment is in the area that is more bustling and the residents are very colorful people, mostly of North African descent. They like to gather on the street and visit, as their culture taught them so. My friend and I (2 Caucasian middle aged women) realized that the people were very friendly and respectful. Some warned us about our purses - that would be the worst case, I guess. Like everywhere else, where tourists go. My American friend was shopping alone a lot in these local shops. She liked it. I would recommend the place, it will expose you to something new and it is very, very close to the Montmartre.

  • We really enjoyed our stay at Sara's place. The apartment was perfect to stay in with our baby. Everything was arranged, babybed and everything. In the summer it's probably even better because of the nice garden. Sara was very helpful with suggestions where to eat and shop!

  • Apartment was clean and lovely. Had everything we needed. Sara was a lovely host and was always contactable. She made our 3 year old feel especially welcome. It close to transport links. The area was quite diverse and in retrospect, not quite right for us, but we enjoyed our stay. and would recommend the apartment.

About
I've lived in many parts of the world, but Paris has been my home for the past 16 years. My husband Alex and I love the extremely cosmopolitan mix of the 18th arrondissement, and especially our micro-neighbourhood, the private pedestrian street called Villa Poissonnière. We enjoy hosting people from all walks of life. Please feel free to contact us if you have any questions. We look forward to hearing from you!
