A house that goes back four generations.
A house that goes back four generations.
My house has been the home of my family for the past four generations since it was built around 1933. It is located at the foot of Filopappou hill, right next to the Acropolis hill. The main advantage of the house is that it is located in a quiet residential neighborhood, yet just one stop away from the Acropolis metro station and two stops from Syntagma square.
A lot of greek TV series have used it for filming in the interior.
At daytime the sun shines directly into the house. One can leisurely enjoy his/her morning coffee in the living room, before deciding to start the day. The archaeological areas nearby can be visited on foot through Filopappou hill or through the city.
Everything you may need is close to you: a supermarket across the street, a grocery flea-market every Friday, a drugstore, local fast-food or traditional restaurants, bars and cafes.
It offers close access to the metro, the tram and several buses to take you anywhere in the city; you can always, of course, choose to walk through Plaka and get to see the "old city" of Athens.
I will be more than happy to show you around the area, if you let me know what it is that interests you. :)
Ilias (email hidden), he was very responsive throughout our stay and very helpful. The apartment was very nice, and an easy walk (10-15 minutes) from the center of town. On nights we didn't want to walk, a cab ride from the Acropolis/Plaka neighborhood was only 5-6 Euro. Definitely worth it for such a great price.
We spent three nights in Athens, staying in Ilias' apartment in Koukaki. The apartment is in an older building with lots of character and is spacious, light and very comfortable. The area is very local with lots of bars and tavernas nearby, and you can walk to the Acropolis and central Athens in under 20 minutes, so very convenient. Ilias was away so his father was there to meet and greet us. He is was very kind and generous to us, driving us to our rental car after we checked out. I highly recommend Ilias' apartment for a stay in Athens.
The first thing to know is that this is not an apartment, this is a house, a roomy, airy, well-decorated house. Three of us spent about five days there and never felt crowded. Ilias is an excellent host, in addition to a page of instructions that covered everything we needed to know, we also had detailed instructions on the best local bakery, restaurants, and instructions for public transport. And because Ilias lives there when he is not renting it, it has everything a complete house would have, including sufficient bedding and a great, fully stocked kitchen.
It is in a desired Athenian neighborhood, about a 20 minute from the Acropolis. Although you could reach the subway system in about 10 minutes, we just walked straight to Plaka and most of the desired areas.
How long would it take me to decide to stay there again? Less than a minute.
We have enjoyed stay in this lovely house! It is spacious, clean and tastefully furnished. Location was perfect - close enough to the city center and the Acropolis hills - we did a lot of walking and loved the neighbourhood.
Ilias and his father provided valuable information and even tips for dining - excellent hosts!

Greeted by Nick as planned who was most helpful. House is very comfortable and interesting. Walked home from Acrolpolis so not far from centre however trolley bus stop 50 paces from door. You get a taste if living in typical Athens suburb.
The flat is fabulous, it has very nice designer features. The location is good for looking around, it takes about 15 min or so to walk to Akropolis. IIias and his father are very helpful and we felt looked after. The only minus was that we found that it is very noisy on the streets starting from early morning which makes it difficult to sleep with open windows. However, Athens in general is (email hidden) and I suspect that noise levels would be even worse in other areas.
The noise Tatiana refers to is mainly coming from the cars at the narrow alley next to the house which unpark to go to work in the morning. This has been an issue to just a couple of guests among all those who have stayed at "By the hill" during these years. I can understand that some might be more sensitive and unfamiliar than others and I empathise with them completely. Unfortunately, as Tatiana says, Athens is a big city with many motorbikes and cars plus small streets that reflect the sound more than usual thus sleeping with windows open is not a good idea for guests who are not used to similar noises. Anyhow, the house has many pairs of earplugs for those sensitive ears and fans to cool you during the night, so you can just keep shutters and windows closed and enjoy a more quiet sleep.
Staying at Ilias's apartment was an important part of my amazing experience of Athens. Its distinctive feel and ideal location gave an added dash of colour to my memories of Athens. Ilias and his Dad's attentiveness and good nature also ensured the perfect organisation of things.
Everything was nice, as expected. No problems whatsoever.
Ilias was really friendly and helpfull :)
I would recomend this place to everyone traveling to Athens.
My husband and I stayed here for 3 nights in early May. It (email hidden) with a lot of character as the pictures suggest. We found it to be conveniently located and enjoyed the location once we got our bearings.
Ilias (email hidden) and was very communicative and helpful throughout our stay.
Ilias, his family and his apartment are fantastic! From beginning to end, Ilias was attentive and super helpful. He arranged a taxi for us from the airport when we arrived late and to the port when we left early. His dad met us to let us in because he was out of town. Our luggage didn't make it until a day after we did so Illias lent my husband and I few tshirts until our bags arrived. When they did, he had them delivered to his mom's house (a couple blocks away) so we wouldn't miss any time sight seeing. He met us when we left early for the port. We accidentally took the house key with us when we left for Santorini, but Illias was very gracious and patient waiting for us to return in ten days and bring the key back to him.
He was very attentive with messaging and making arrangements for us and recommending places for us to go: bakery and souvleki.
The apartment is located convenient to many things (Fillapapou Hill, Acropolis and museum, Roman Agora, ext) all of which we walked to. It is clean and spacious and has a lot of character.
What can we say, we loved it! My only regret is that we didn't get to spend more time with him.
A short note about another review: I did not find the mattress to be too hard. Throwing toilet paper in the basket and not the toilet is common in many other countries, including latin america where we have traveled quite a bit so we did not find this to be a problem at all.
