Personal residence close to UNCW, Airlie Gardens, Intracoastal Waterway (ICW), "Ocean Highway" US-17, Wrightsville Beach, & ILM airport with GREAT view of always flowing tidal marsh. Bike, drive, fly, jog, kayak, skateboard, SUP or walk almost anywhere! Chill and relax, go surfing or practice yoga inside or outside on deck, pier or grass! Optimal for health & nature loving couple (or tight singles) willing to live in old house. Regardless of old house, you'll be happy on this property! :-)

The space
Beautiful natural waterfront tidal marsh property! View beautiful birds, sunrises and sunsets from the floating dock, house deck, or therapy room. Perfect for an individual, an intimate couple, and an occasional guest, this well located single bedroom house can comfortably (but not perfectly) sleep a second couple on the sofa or pull out in the media room or therapy room.

The kitchen includes an electric stove/oven, refrigerator/freezer, microwave, farm sink, and hickory and ceramic countertops. It's pretty old and is not the best kitchen ever (Erik has never been much of a cook). But Erik made sure the fridge keeps beers cold. For the real cooks of the Earth, there are plenty of quality cooking pots and pans. The remodeled kitchen is now much better than when Erik started working on this old house back in 2002! You won't be disappointed.

Relax in our now world famous "Therapy Room" featuring the calming but actively wonderful view of the tidal Bradley Creek salt marsh. You will feel great in this natural space. Keep your eyes open. Plan on seeing more animals from this room than clocks, computers or TVs. Converse, meditate, observe, read and think in this room. When not sleeping, this is where Erik spends most of his time. He needs the therapy!

The one and only one bedroom. A bit tight but you will enjoy the naturally lighted space with a great view of Bradley Creek right from the queen sized bed. Those seeking serious darkness or privacy may not prefer windows with great views. A female guest once requested curtains. Erik likes it best with wide open view of birds and the creek and dogs! If you are the type of person worried about privacy, closed doors, and door locks, then you'd probably never use the outdoor shower and should probably go somewhere else (unless you're ready for a change:-)! The bedroom includes a closet and dresser to hang your dresses and suits and store clothes and belongings.

Work seriously from a small but comfortable corner desk with a Steelcase Leap ergonomic chair, reliable internet access, indoor and outdoor WIFI network with monitor, keyboard, mouse, and audio speakers that you can easily connect your PC or phone. When I'm in Costa Rica, I miss the desk and Leap chair. (Wow! Try getting a Leap in Costa Rica! Practically impossible!) Be sure to look up your favorite words on the stand right next to the desk. You will like that dictionary!

The Media Room holds a bookshelf, video monitor, and couch that opens up to fold-out double sized sofa bed. I keep a small selection of books like dictionaries, maps & thesaurus handy. Not many books here but we've got plenty of birds and words and maps! All "monitors" or screens are usually NOT connected to cable or broadcast TV. However, Internet is available via "TV" in the media room. There are browsers available on the TV or you can use your own device to drive the screen. Either by Ethernet cable, HDMI, or wifi. The TV supports widi and miracast to make the TV your PC monitor.

The Deck, though not as new as the kitchen, is one of the newer functional parts of Hooker Haven. Credit goes to EggRoll for seeing my surfboard rugs and having the great idea to inlay a surfboard into deck boards! A great place to absorb sun, celebrate, eat a meal, drink beers, entertain guests, look in the sky, practice yoga, read a book and watch birds. Seriously, take it from me potential Airbnb guest. The deck along with the therapy room may be the best bird watching place on the planet. And when you are living or staying here, unlike most other great observation locations, you never need to leave! Everything you want is close:-)

Enter the "Mudroom" from the Deck. You may be like Buddy LongDog or you may be more like Muddy LongDog. You may have sand and mud--Bradley Creek mud-- all over you. If at all possible, please wash before entering the mudroom from outside. If you are muddy or dirty or salty and it's warm enough you can take an outdoor shower and clean up before entering the mudroom. If you are dirty and it's freezing, we understand. Often, a dog (or cat) may enter the mudroom through the "dog door" (remember that P-Kitty is a dog) and they may have just taken a swim in the creek and a walk in the mud. It's very possible. So, sometimes you need to "protect" the rest of the house from a muddy dog. In that case, you can shut the door from the mudroom to the therapy room and the door from the mudroom to the kitchen. That keeps a muddy wet dog off of your clean floors and furniture but still gives them access to food and protection from the weather. It's also a laundry room and bodega of sorts with the step ladder, and house tools.

The Fire Pit is to your left--the West--as you walk out a North facing door. This is a great spot for roasting marshmallows! You will find a bench swing with a beautiful view that is just perfect for two lovers. The swing is great with or without fire. Typically, I fill the fire pit with pine cones and branches from our numerous trees. If you seek a quick fire after a sunset, the pine yard debris is fine. For a quality campfire or to cook food you need to step up from pine wood to something better suited to cooking--like oak. Be careful walking around the fire pit. Near the Fire Pit the yard is significantly slanted down towards the creek.

To the northeast of the Fire Pit, please find our Ephemeral Spring. A freshwater spring that naturally flows out of the ground briefly during and following periods of significant local rainfall. Even though the spring is directly next to tidal salt water, the freshwater keeps a few trees close to the saltwater well watered even if it does not appear to be ebbing out of the ground at a given moment. A few years back I built a bench out of granite rocks right next to the spring. It's a relaxing bench to view the creek and watch birds. Sometimes you will be lucky enough to hear the sounds of water ebbing out of the ground. Lots of birds and other animals know about the fresh water and show up more often when it is actively flowing. Your dog will figure it out too! The birds even take baths in it! Amazing to observe two different types of water come together.

Pointing to the North, the Pier & Floating Dock conveniently provide tidal access to the run of the creek. Dogs (and people) can jump off floating dock into the run of the creek. You can also launch kayaks, SUPs, or other small water vehicles. Enjoy a close look at many types of marine life from the pier or floating dock. Send Erik your amazing pictures of animals!

Depart the pier South and head East to the Teapot Garden. Go all the way to the East and look at the shape of the stone retaining wall. See the Teapot?

From the cover of the Teapot take Lovers Lane to the South entrance of the Compass Patio. Notice the perimeter marked by pine trees and rocks around a black cherry tree in the exact center. Significant points of the compass are marked by triangular shaped rocks. The perimeter is also defined by the wisteria arbor that goes fully around the black cherry tree. When the wisteria vine blooms, come here to see 360 degrees of beautiful purple wisteria flowers and be surrounded by the succulent scents. On a really hot day, the noticeable difference in cooler temperature and vertical breezes of this patio are quite amazing when compared to the rest of the property.
