The Location:

The house is located on Sarat Bose Road (originally known as Lansdowne Road) in south Calcutta (or Kolkata if you like). This used to be a quiet residential area on a tree-lined avenue. With urban growth, this area has fast turned into a busy commercial street with old Art-Deco buildings giving way to hospitals, offices, banks, shops and restaurants. Located behind a building facing the main road, ours is partly insulated from the street noise although we are in the bustling heart of south Calcutta. A somewhat upscale slum is right behind this building (meaning of course that – the people living here are better off and the stench and filth that one associates with slums elsewhere are not present) and therefore, one has a ring side seat to all the various festivals that the city is famous for.

A host of confectioneries, coffee shops and restaurants are within walking distance of the house. The Airport is an hour away. It takes about 30 minutes to reach Howrah Station and about 20 minutes to Sealdah Station, depending on traffic/mode of transport. The Metro Railway’s Jatin Das Station is just two blocks away, and a 12-minute Metro ride will take you to the downtown area.

About us:

We are a family of designers and artists and collectors of traditional arts and crafts, interested in world literature and cinema. Our daughter, who lives a few blocks away, is a jewelry designer and her husband is a travel writer. We love meeting people, cooking and music. Our house is a veritable museum, but much of our collection is locked up in boxes due to space constraints. On occasion we take them out to discuss their inherent artistic qualities to people who are interested. We understand and appreciate the finer things of life but live simply. Our home is cherished by all for its environment of laughter and bonhomie.

Overall Guest Satisfaction

  • Abhijit and Smirti are wonderful. If you're heading to Kolkata, stay with them, you will not be disappointed. In fact, after you leave Kolkata, you'll keep thinking about what great hosts they are.

Abhijit and Smirti offer a charming and clean studio with a terrace and delicious breakfast to your liking (Indian or continental). Their house is situated near a metro station and a short distance walk from a selection of delicious restaurants and the Khali Ghat temple.

Abhijit knows the city extremely well, so he'll be able to guide you if you're keen on a self guided walking tour of the city sights and other hot spots. If you're keen on Jewish history, don't be shy to ask him to show you Kolkata's synagogues. They are truly exceptional!

Abhijit and Smirti, we can't wait to see you again soon!

    Response from Abhijit:

Thank you and we shall be more than happy to see you again Veronica!

  • It was a pleasure staying at the 'Studio on the Terrace'. Abhijit and Smriti's touch is clearly visible in the the studio, a charming stay with art adorning the well art directed room. It's also amazing how well the house is situated in the hustle bustle of the city and yet is quiet once you enter it. Needless to say that everything was properly arranged and to one's comfort.

However, more importantly Abhijit & Smriti are very welcoming hosts and it was an utter pleasure conversing with them about Calcutta, its history, art, and what all not. Abhijit also advised me where to go in the city and what to do according to my taste and need, and his tips were spot on. His knowledge is something to be benefitted from, so please do so.

Over all I loved Calcutta, and I know I shall be returning soon and I most certainly know where I will be staying too.

  • Excellent stay and great hosts. Abhijeet and Smirti made it possible for an humdrum stay turn into a memorable experience. We will surely be going again and again.

Thank you Keki...will look forward to your visit again.

  • What a wonderful oasis in the middle of the hustle and bustle of Kolkata! We particularly enjoyed the terrace, just outside the studio apartment, where you could watch the city wake up in the morning and fall asleep in the evening. The location and transport connections (metro / taxi, or walking around in the neighbourhood) are also excellent. The hosts, Abhijit and Smriti were very hospitable and welcoming (and served the best coffee in India). Warmly recommended!

  • I arrived in Kolkata from northern India tired and wanting all the comforts of home. The Studio Apartment and Terrace Garden was the perfect answer. It's much larger than the photo shows with kitchen conveniences and a wonderfully hot shower. It is also very private, unlike some places where the room is a part of the family's living quarters.
Abhijit and Sretee (not sure how to spell his wife's name) were charming hosts. Immediately we got into conversations ranging from art to politics. They invited me to a party that evening (which I had to decline since my energy level was sagging) but the next night I joined them when they had a friend drop by. Abhijit also showed me parts of Kolkata I had not seen earlier, which included a lovely shop; By Loom, where I bought gorgeous hand woven cloth. I had a wonderful time in Kolkata and the Gupta's were one of the reasons why.

Thank you Barbara for your comments. Hope to read your book when it is published. Please let me know when that happens and hope to see you again some day.

  • Having read the other reviews, I see that my feelings are shared by everyone who has stayed with abhi and smriti…so at the risk of repeating all thats has already been said- I absolutely loved my stay, and it really made my trip to kolkta very special. They made me feel completely at home, and really looked after me. I love the house and their beautiful collection of objects. I loved talking with them, delicious food and was very sad to say goodbye. I also hope to return and spend some time making work there as it is such a peaceful and inspiring place. Thanks for everything!

Thank you too Elsie for this review. Will look forward to seeing you again.

  • You know sometimes you arrive in a place and you feel immediately relaxed and at home? Even before my mind had taken in all the incredible details with which Abjihit and his wife designed and decorated the flat, I had an overall and immediate sense of well-being. The flat is gorgeous, the beds comfortable, the terrace amazing, the neighbourhood fantastic, the company stellar. (The pieces in the flat are so wonderful that I I took many photos!)
As a woman alone for the first half of my stay, I was immediately made to feel part of the family. Really. I was invited and brought to a fascinating art installation by a collective Abhijit is in, had dinner with them some evenings, and had wonderful long conversations about everything from Bengal history to jurisprudence. I couldn't get enough of Abhijit and his family, but I'm also sure that if you wish to be more isolated, it would be easy and natural, too.
I can't imagine staying anywhere else in Kolkata. I am already trying to figure out how I could go back and stay for an extended period as being there felt so much like home, I already miss it dearly.

Thank you for your kind words Julia...will be waiting for you to return.

  • I had a wonderful stay at the Studio on the Terrace. I was there for two weeks and Abhijit is a fantastic host. We got on like a house on fire and instantly found we both love debating and sharing stories. Abhi is so knowledgeable about Kolkata. He loves the city and wants his guests to love it too! The room is perfect. Beautifully decorated with interesting artworks, the fridge is a lifesaver and the bathroom was spotlessly clean with hot water easily available. The wifi is fast and reliable as well. Having your own key ensures some privacy and personal space, but you can always pop downstairs, ring the bell and be welcomed in for a coffee and a chat! Abhi and Smriti were like parents to me during my stay, always concerned with my safety and totally integrated me into their circle of friends and family. Smriti is an amazing cook so do take advantage of a traditional Bengali meal while you are there!

Artist and designer
I am a visual artist and designer and am deeply interested in vernacular architecture. I have therefore built an experimental storm resistant house in the Sundarbans Delta entirely with bamboo. The things that I cannot do without are friends, food, conversation, books, arts and crafts, the internet, long walks in winter, a short siesta, working with my hands and a few drinks in the evenings, ...not in that particular order. We have a good collection of books (English and Bengali) and our turntable (record player) still works. We love people and we are house proud. My partner of 32 years - Smriti, has green fingers and the garden on the terrace takes a lot of her time. She loves to read, watch movies and cook. She also occasionally makes terra-cotta pottery.
