The Space

The house is located in Tong Village, within easy reach of both Leeds and Bradford. The house is an ideal location for exploring the many trails and walks around the area, located in an open stretch of green belt land. The village also contains its own dairy (making its own ice cream) and tea rooms, great village pub called The Greyhound, a farm shop, and very large garden centre. For information on a self-guided walk, please search (website hidden) for 'Visit Bradford Tong Village Self-guided Walk' which should help you locate the link.

There is a private room available, with double bed and storage space, and the house has a shared bathroom. I am normally out and about, so you'll often have the place to yourself, but always happy to answer any questions or give you an overview of the area.

You are welcome to the use of the kitchen (cooking hobs, oven, microwave, dishwasher and all utensils etc.), two lounge rooms, bathroom and guest bedroom during your stay.

You are welcome to use of the washing machine / tumble dryer.

Just for some background on the property, the following description of the house was provided in the Conservation Area Assessment by Bradford City Council:

"The building is a rebuild of an earlier vernacular building in the same brick used at the nearby Tong Hall. The re-use of the stone chamfered window margins, doorway quoins and gable end of the original building creates an interesting if not unique juxtaposition of the old and new ways of construction in the 18th century. Prior to the 18th century, the vast majority of buildings were made by local stonemasons using readily available materials with little input from elsewhere as to how the building should appear. Nearby Tong Hall is an early example of how even in the provinces external influences (in this case the architecture of Venice in the late Renaissance) were determining the design of buildings and at the same time improved communications led to trade with wider geographical areas and the importation of building materials from other places. Therefore although it is essentially a vernacular cottage, the building shows evidence of how the design and appearance of buildings was heading away from the vernacular tradition. It is believed that until the early 19th century this cottage was an ancient inn originally established by the monks of Tong Chantry. For the three hundred years prior to its relocation, the inn was named the Griffin, after the Tempest coat-of arms."

  • A really nice cottage to stay in with some quirky 17th century features. The village is very nice and quiet with a good curry house just up the road! Matthew (email hidden) and made us feel very welcome. Only thing to mention is that there is no television which was actually quite nice in a way. Bring your laptop if you want to watch things as there is WiFi access. Overall though we loved it!

  • Matthew owns a unique character filled property set in a lovely village in beautiful countryside just outside Leeds. Friendly host, comfy bed, hot shower and a pub serving good food just two minutes walk away. We recommend taking a satnav or a detailed map as Tong Lane isn't well signposted so was a touch tricky to find. Thanks Matthew for your hospitality.

  • Enjoyed by stay at Matthew's unique residence. It was a great base for exploring Yorkshire. Matthew (email hidden) and I was lucky to get a brief listen to his euphonium practice. His home is clean, very tidy and the room was large, and had a very comfortable bed. I would happily stay again.
