I'm a treehouse fanatic so when I came across my current apartment and saw the view of Fort Tryon Park from the bedroom window, I knew I was home. It's not actually a tree house but it's about the closest I can get to one living in NYC.
The apartment itself is defined as a Jr. one bedroom meaning the living room and Kitchen are combined into one space with a separate bedroom and bathroom. It's none too fancy but its cute, cozy and home to me and my cat, Izzie. While only a one-flight walk-up, my apartment is actually located on the 3 floor in the building.
Sleeping accommodations include a full size bed in the bedroom and a futon that folds down into a full size bed in the living room/kitchen.
In addition to a great view, I live on a quiet street up on a hill with easy access to public transportation. I'm a short walk from Fort Tryon Park and the Cloisters Museum. It's easy to get downtown or if you're looking to do a little hiking it's also easy to get out of the city by car or by train.
A little further north about 20 blocks (15 minute walk or 5 min. bus ride) there's a great Saturday farmers market, some nice little restaurants and Inwood Hill Park with some of the last remaining old growth forest in the city.
Be respectful of my neighbors. No parties or loud activities.
Clean up after yourself (dishes, etc.)
We really enjoyed our stay at Lorrie's apartment. It was amazingly clean and very well organized. Everything about the apartment was so comfortable. The towels she had laid out for us are probably my most favorite towels I have ever used! I wish I could keep them!! The location of the apartment is a couple blocks from the subway station and about 30 minutes from Times Square (which I did not mind since I love to people watch). It was only one train down to the heart of New York and we didn't need to transfer which made everything so much easier. The neighborhood got a bit noisy at times but it was New Years so that was to be expected, plus we were so exhausted when we got back that we fell asleep right away. Lorrie is a lovely person and very easy to communicate with. I would definitely recommend her apartment to anyone I know. It was a pleasure meeting her and I would love to come back.
Lorrie was an extremely gracious host. She offered me and my travel companion everything in her fridge and pantry, and even left little bath samples for us to use, alongside the fresh linens. In addition, she has a great personality and a good sense of humor--we felt welcome immediately. There is a full-size bed and pull-out futon (which I found to be very comfy), so it worked out great for me and my friend.
As a former New Yorker who has lived in 6 different NY apartments and seen the insides of many others, I must say this is by far the CLEANEST and neatest Manhattan apartment I have ever seen in my life. Absolutely immaculate! As a neat freak, I cannot even explain to you how elated I was about this. I am still in awe about how clean her bathroom is (no small feat in NY).
A few things. No TV, but Wi-Fi. Yes, it's not smack dab in the middle of the city, but it's well worth the trip up to Fort George, just a few local stops from 168th. The neighborhood is safe, with lots of eateries to keep your hunger at bay.
If you are not used to city noise, I highly recommend bringing ear plugs for sleeping through weird hallway activity, traffic, and typical NY heater hiss.
I would stay at Lorrie's place again in a heartbeat. Thank you, Lorrie, for a really great, safe, warm winter stay!
Lorrie was extremely flexible! She was out of town for our trip and had her really nice (and funny) friend meet us at the apartment with the keys. We needed flexible check in and out times and this was not a problem. This was first time my partner and I had been to the city and we really appreciated her kindness and willingness to work with us,
THE BED IS AMAZING! This is the most comfortable bed we have ever slept in and now we are searching for a similar mattress and pillows. Share your secret Lorrie! :)
We HIGHLY recommend staying here. We enjoyed the fact that it was right above the city so we could get away from the hustle and bustle at night and relax. The subway stop a couple blocks away provides a convenient way to access transportation. Absolutely zero complaints. It was refreshing to see appreciation for a natural way of living as well. Oh, and her cat is beautiful!
Thank you so so SO much Lorrie!
Thank you for the glowing review and know that you and Jared are welcome back anytime! :-) As for my secret, (website hidden). Keetsa makes eco-friendly matress, pillows, etc. I think they're a great company and offer reasonable prices.
I'm originally from the Show-Me State (Missouri) but have been living and working in New York City for the past 13 years. The neighborhood where I live is one of the last remaining residential areas in Manhattan. It has several lush, green parks, a museum, and most importantly to me multiple transportation options for getting downtown, visiting other boroughs and getting out of the city all together. I love to travel, hike, garden, and enjoy good food and conversation with family and friends.
