We just got home and we've had a great time in New York!
Arlette was very helpful, giving us tips about good restaurants in the neighbourhood, breakfast places, etc. She really made us feel at home.
The apartment was also great, overlooking Central Park, very nice neighbourhood, also close to subway. (2 blocks)
Definitely a place to go back to!
I enjoyed my stay at Arlette's apartment last week. She is approachable and I enjoyed spending the last night in town having good conversation, wine and pizza, after a busy week! The bed is very comfortable and it is a city apartment only a block from the subway and right next to the park. I would recommend the apartment if you do not need a kitchen (which I did not), but there is always coffee/tea and a small fridge in your room.
This place is right across the street from Central Park, and is blissfully quiet at night. The bed is comfortable, too, so it's conducive to a good night's sleep.
The location is on the upper west side, so it's not really close to most New York attractions. The subway is only two blocks away, however.
Two things we didn't know beforehand: the hostess has a dog and a cat. And, she smokes.
The pets were nice, and so was the hostess, Arlette. The smoke was a drag, though.
Hi Kenny It is well written on my page that there are a dog and a cat and if the door of your bedroom had been closed as I suggested, the smell of the smoking wouldn't have been there. I wish you had told me then and there it would have helped me and you too(: I am trying so hard to quit! I smoke in my bedroom with an open window. I am so sorry about it. It will soon be all over.
Arlette is a kind host and location is excellent. We were very late due to plane cancellation, and she was very understanding. It's a very old bldg. and apartment which I hadn't expected from photos. Wifi fine, bed nice, bathroom and shower extremely small. Grateful to have it in the room but the shower was so cramped. My husband didn't use it during our stay because the shower floor was uneven and we worried about falling. Heat fine for cold nights; not sure I'd open windows on fire-escape in nice weather. Felt confined to our room and didn't feel free to get water for tea in kitchen or sit in living room. Probably miscommunication was our fault but we didn't want to disturb.
the building is typical of the upper west side, elegant, and early 20th century, high ceilings and parquet floors, and thick walls, but without a doorman(: Yes indeed it's old Manhattan. Sorry you didn't feel like coming to the living room though I did tell your husband he could play the piano whenever he wanted as you came in. And I am sorry he didn't. The kitchen was here for your use every morning but you left early each morning and didn't come back till (email hidden)e kettle and tea and coffee in the bedroom is there not to confine my guests to their room but for a private convenience. during the day or in the evening. I still hope you come back, as it was a pleasure to meet you if only crossing each other in the corridor.
Per my son, whom I booked for, Arlette was a wonderful and "very French" host. He truly enjoyed her apartment and practicing his French with her. He especially enjoyed her welcome with wine and a (only once in a great while) cigarette!! He lived in NYC for 9 years so didn't need her assistance with places to go/see, but from dealing with her myself, I know she would have been most helpful. He said he would happily stay at her place again!
We had a fabulous time staying in this location in NY, close to the subway, a quiet & neighbourhood next door to Central Park plus a great host. Would highly recommend.
I stayed in Arlette's apartment for 4 nights, and everything was fine - very cozy, pleasant, beautifully located, etc. It's a very nice neighborhood, nice room. Didn't actually meet host, but she provided a list of local restaurants and services, and provided great wi-fi. They were very nice in letting me drop off my bag early. Great dog and cat. However, she wasn't there during this time, and her son was the on-site host. He was a very nice young man, we got along very well, and there was no problem. However, on the last night of my stay he threw a big party and I didn't sleep much that night.

Unusually so, I am a woman of 2 cities New York and Paris. Love them both
Originally from France where I own and rent an apartment I used to live there in this great neighborhood the Marais, that I know like my pocket I will give you all kind of tips (I love food!) . I have wonderful caretakers who will welcome you while I'll stay in touch with you before, during and after thanks to the internet and phone.
I have lived 40 years on and off in the Big Apple. I love New York. I will help you love it too. I wear a smile and I have the New York energy in me. I live in big 2 bedroom apartment on the Upper West Side across from Central Park, so civilized and peaceful but close enough to the jungle, I rent one of my 2 bedrooms -be my guests...
I have traveled twice around the world.
I am forever curious. I love to paint, do yoga, do business, cook, jazz clubs and opera, bicycle and of course first, my son. I have a small cabin in the woods Upstate 2 hours North of NYC where I escape on weekends that keeps me sane.(I might start renting it also some day(: )
Now I understand well your thirst for discovery. I enjoy receiving people ,sharing stories, I communicate easily.
See you soon.
