Arlette was very efficient and good with communication and responses. Apartment is very well positioned for subway and great for Central Park, but block/ streets behind were surprisingly down market with public housing a couple of streets away.
Actual room is good for size, bathroom tiny and everything was clean but very dated. Linen and towels could be newer, and we were not offered fresh towels during our 4 nights. Fridge in room very helpful, bed is ok but we used the single and double as the double was to small for the 2 of us. It was great to have the single there which was very comfortable. Arlette takes pride in her place, so you have to take shoes off all the time, but unfortunately person living above doesn't do that, so despite quiet neighbourhood, she was noisy upstairs a couple of nights which is not Arlettes fault of course. You can borrow bowls, spoons etc, but otherwise not use kitchen which Arlette states clearly on site.
So if you want to do a few nights on a tighter budget which we did, this is an option for sure in a good spot to access all NY has to offer.
Thank you for your nice review. Sorry about the neighbor upstairs (one night) I talked to her. But I am surprised about the sheets and towels as I just bought them and washed them first: brand new from IKEA in cotton sorry I don't iron like they do in hotels.(: I am also surprise you didn't use the kitchen to have breakfast in front of the beautiful view in the morning. The thing I state is no cooking. sorry about the misunderstanding. The great thing about Airbnb is the communication with your host, it's not just the price(:
Perfect getaway! Arlette's room is in a beautiful older building full of charm and character, across the street from Central Park and 2 short blocks from the subway, making all of NYC easily accessible. The bed was very comfortable (semi-firm memory foam) with crisp, clean sheets. The small bathroom was functional, spotless and private (shower was hot and had good pressure).
Arlette herself was marvelous! She is particular about how she likes things done but it's her home after all, not a hotel. She is overflowing with energy, opinions and information. Her enthusiasm might be a bit overwhelming on arrival day (this being my first trip to NYC my head had been spinning since disembarking from the plane!) But she had some great resources! (I loved the Ethiopian restaurant and used the transit maps daily. Wish I'd had more time to visit the galleries she recommended...)
I was fortunate to share food, stories and laughs with Arlette. My trip to NYC was full of highlights and Arlette (and her accommodations) ranked high on the list. I would go back in a minute!
We just got home and we've had a great time in New York!
Arlette was very helpful, giving us tips about good restaurants in the neighbourhood, breakfast places, etc. She really made us feel at home.
The apartment was also great, overlooking Central Park, very nice neighbourhood, also close to subway. (2 blocks)
Definitely a place to go back to!
We had a wonderful experience. I took my kids to NYC four nights and wanted to stay in the middle of it all. Arlette's place is in an excellent location to Central Park, subway and restaurants.
The room was private with its own bath, closet, dresser and mini fridge. We loved staying with Arlette and hope to go back to stay with her in about four months.
I enjoyed my stay at Arlette's apartment last week. She is approachable and I enjoyed spending the last night in town having good conversation, wine and pizza, after a busy week! The bed is very comfortable and it is a city apartment only a block from the subway and right next to the park. I would recommend the apartment if you do not need a kitchen (which I did not), but there is always coffee/tea and a small fridge in your room.
This place is right across the street from Central Park, and is blissfully quiet at night. The bed is comfortable, too, so it's conducive to a good night's sleep.
The location is on the upper west side, so it's not really close to most New York attractions. The subway is only two blocks away, however.
Two things we didn't know beforehand: the hostess has a dog and a cat. And, she smokes.
The pets were nice, and so was the hostess, Arlette. The smoke was a drag, though.
Hi Kenny It is well written on my page that there are a dog and a cat and if the door of your bedroom had been closed as I suggested, the smell of the smoking wouldn't have been there. I wish you had told me then and there it would have helped me and you too(: I am trying so hard to quit! I smoke in my bedroom with an open window. I am so sorry about it. It will soon be all over.
Arlette is a kind host and location is excellent. We were very late due to plane cancellation, and she was very understanding. It's a very old bldg. and apartment which I hadn't expected from photos. Wifi fine, bed nice, bathroom and shower extremely small. Grateful to have it in the room but the shower was so cramped. My husband didn't use it during our stay because the shower floor was uneven and we worried about falling. Heat fine for cold nights; not sure I'd open windows on fire-escape in nice weather. Felt confined to our room and didn't feel free to get water for tea in kitchen or sit in living room. Probably miscommunication was our fault but we didn't want to disturb.
the building is typical of the upper west side, elegant, and early 20th century, high ceilings and parquet floors, and thick walls, but without a doorman(: Yes indeed it's old Manhattan. Sorry you didn't feel like coming to the living room though I did tell your husband he could play the piano whenever he wanted as you came in. And I am sorry he didn't. The kitchen was here for your use every morning but you left early each morning and didn't come back till (email hidden)e kettle and tea and coffee in the bedroom is there not to confine my guests to their room but for a private convenience. during the day or in the evening. I still hope you come back, as it was a pleasure to meet you if only crossing each other in the corridor.

I have lived 40 years on and off in the Big Apple (from the French Alps and Paris). I love New York! I will help you love it too. I wear a smile and I have the New York energy and rhythm in me. I am blessed to live across from Central Park, where I start and finish the day, walking with my dog and see the seasons change, sometimes my guests join me on hidden path and great views.
I am forever curious. I love to see new places and traveled twice around the world.
I paint, do yoga, friends, jazz clubs and opera, I bicycle. I have a small cabin in the woods Upstate 2 hours North of NYC where I escape the roaring city sometimes and breath in the mountains.
Now I understand well your thirst for discovery. I enjoy receiving people, sharing stories, I communicate easily and keep a sense of humor.
See you soon.
