About this listing
The annexe is in the same compound as the main house and is just a few meters away. It shares the same facilities, but has its own shower and toilet. There are 4 separate bedrooms that comprise the annexe.
A large, comfortable shared house in a quiet, safe Kampala suburb.
Although we have 8 rooms, we only have two listings which are Makindye House and Makindye House Annexe. So, is it best not to pay too much attention to the calendar and contact me directly. I will get back to you and let you know what rooms we have for the dates that you have requested.
We let 8 rooms in total (1 small @ $8 pppn, 2 small @ $10 pppn, 1 large @ $12 pppn, 1 large $14 pppn, 2 at $13 and 1 large $15pppn).
Out of consideration for our clientele (students and volunteers etc.) we try to keep our charges low. This however does not mean that the standard of accommodation is low. Just look at the photos! Five excellent staff are employed to clean all rooms, clean dishes, washing and ironing daily and 24 hour guard.
Most of our guests come from Europe and the US and include medical students, development workers, development studies students, doctors, volunteers, tourists etc.
Friendly informal atmosphere. Safe area. Walking distance from market, internet, shops, public transport and the American Club which has swimming pool, tennis and squash courts, restaurant. etc. A boda boda (small motorbike) ride from city centre.
Our house is a home away from home for our many young visitors. Our visitors often go out together or just hang out on the balcony chilling and chatting.
We have three dogs which are NOT allowed in the house.
Other than the bedrooms and private bathrooms, all areas are communal spaces and available for you to enjoy.
Interaction with Guests
I am around during term time but return to UK during the school holidays. During these times Grace the housekeeper and Sunday the gardener run the house. I am in regular contact with the house and with the guests whilst I am away.
If you walk just a few meters up the hill you will get wonderful views of the city below. Makindye is a quiet neighbourhood with a real sense of community. Neighbours will regularly stop an offer you a lift up the hill. They will guess that you are going to Claire's house. Coffee at Last which is opposite the club has free WiFi and great brownies. Please mention that Claire sent you! The Makindye Market takes place every Friday. It as a wide range of fruit and veg and second hand clothes. There is also a Friday Craft Market further down the hill.
I strongly recommend that Jimmy meets you at the airport. He is reliable, reasonable and knows us well. Airport taxi's may be more expensive and will not know where the house is. You don't want to be roaming the hill in the early hours of the morning not knowing where you are going. Just send me your flight details and I will make sure that he is at the airport to meet you. Guests often rent a taxi together to go out on the town but usually use boda bodas to get to work or to go shopping.
Other Things to Note
The Makindye Country Club is a short walk from the house. If you are a keen tennis player we have rackets and anyone is welcome to join the Sunday morning mix-in session (phone number hidden). You can have a look at their website for costs etc. It is possible to get a short term membership but you can also pay a daily rate. There are times reserved for lap swimming.
No house guests unless arranged in advance.
Smoking only in the garden (not on the balcony or in the rooms)
Please don't leave your things in the communal areas.
If you have been out on the town and return in the early hours, please consider the other guests who will be asleep.
Lock front door on entering and leaving the house.
Last person to bed turns off lights!
Claire has the perfect house which is why we went back for another week! See my first review just below for all the details
Claire's house is perfect. Big clean rooms with Dailey room service and free laundry. It's a big house in a safe part of town. She also has a gate guard 24/7 which is nice. There are restaurants and wifi in walking distance as well as a country club where you can play tennis, workout, go for a swim, or just enjoy western food and good wifi. There are also other people staying at her house so you'll make good friends quickly. Claire also invited guests to things her friends were doing like boating to an island and going out to see Hamlet. All in all 5 stars all around. I can't imagine a better place for the price.
This was a lovely place and perfect for my daughter and I for the time spent. We were made very welcome by Claire and her wonderful staff too! Every provision, with the exception of food, was there and kept in an excellent, clean, usable state. A lovely front patio and outdoor space, our bathroom was "shared" but I do think we were blessed to have it all to our selves. This is a lovely neighborhood on a hill so we had a regular breeze and relatively few mosquitos. Just a 15 minutes walk (possibly shorter when you aren't with a four year old and visiting all the way!) are shops and even a coffee shop that we frequented. I always felt safe and taken care of.
Staying at Claire's place on Makindyke Hill in Kampala was brilliant, a fantastic way to see Kampala. There's a great atmosphere at the house itself with fellow guests and its close to nearby Kabalagala, Kansanga and Gaba. Claire is a really generous host and was great with advice ahead of your trip as you need!
The house is close enough to easily get into the city but without the hassle of the centre's bustle. Nearby Coffee at Last is a close walk and has full access to wifi. It was great having such easy use and access to the fully kitted out kitchen, access to filtered water and being looked after so well by Claire's house keepers Grace and Jessica. The garden is lovely and you'll never meet friendlier dogs!
Having the opportunity for Claire's regular driver Jimmy to pick us up to and from the airport was also great. A great place to stay!
Claire has been so great to me and she has helped me a lot both before I arrived and while staying at the house - she makes you feel very much welcome and at home. Actually, I felt at home from the first day I was there. She has introduced me to places to go and are always up for a chat. There is a relax atmosphere at the house which I like. Claire has great and very reliable staff who are always helpful. They also make me feel very safe. The house is just wonderful with a nice garden and a great view. My room was perfect, furnished with everything I needed and kept nicely clean by the staff – thank you for that. I am truly grateful for the hospitality I have met and I look very much forward to coming back.
My stay at Claire's house was great. The location is a perfect retreat just outside Kampala centre, with a welcome serenity after a day of work or fun. Claire was very helpful before and during the trip and was a significant contributor to a fantastic trip. There is everything you need at the house, including other guest that were really friendly and very interesting people. I couldn't have asked for more and really hope to get a room here if I'm lucky enough to return.
I had a great time at Makindye, and have already booked to return for a few more weeks. Claire was a very welcoming host. While at times the kitchen can get a bit chaotic, the house is a great place to meet other volunteers, students and travellers. I was in Kampala to do research as a graduate student and found that the house was an excellent base: far enough out of town to be a bit quieter and more relaxed, while still only a short boda ride into town when I had meetings.
