About this listing
This is great for backpackers, workers, families and students who want private lockable rooms in the Inner West with free use of multiple kitchens and bathrooms and who understand that the rundown nature of the guesthouse means cheap rooms.
*** Please read the description below and contact me before booking so I can confirm prices and dates. ***
Room 2 is one of the rooms suited best to longer term guests or students. – new carpet tiles, a single bed, Bar fridge, Ikea set of drawers, fan and study desk, A second single bed or bunks can be set up if needed.
The guesthouse is above a shop in the warehouse/industrial area close to Sydney Airport and it is on the corner of some very busy streets. If you find noise in the house is an issue you can ask for free earplugs but most people get used to it very quickly. There is street parking behind the building.
Rooms do not have TVs and there is no common lounge or dining area. We do provide free fast WiFi Internet across the house. We are best suited to be either a “crash pad” for travelers who are out most of the day and don't need common areas or for students who will be spending a lot of time in their rooms studying or working.
It's is also only 5kms from University of Sydney and UTS. It's 8kms from University of New South Wales and buses to both places take less than half an hour.
You are less than five minutes walk to a small shop, a Hungry Jacks(Burger King), a KFC and a McDonalds. Opposite the house is a pub with restaurant, events, music and cheap drinks. Fifteen minutes walk takes to you a beautiful big parkland area with a cafe, or to the local shopping center of Marrickville with the nearest big supermarket.
Families are best in Room 6 or Room 9 which are larger with their own dining tables and a bit more space. I can also provide babysitting at an additional charge.
This is a great opportunity for backpackers, workers, families and students who want private lockable rooms in the Inner West with free use of multiple kitchens and bathrooms and who understand that the rundown nature of the guesthouse means cheap rooms!
There are 10 bedrooms in total, 2 kitchens, 3 bathrooms and some bedrooms have their own showers.
The smallest rooms can sleep two and the largest rooms can take six in dorm style, or a small family. There is a coin operated washing machine and dryer on site. There may be up to 20 people in the guesthouse sharing all facilities and everybody is expected to help keep kitchens and bathrooms clean.
Interaction with Guests
There is no reception desk so this guesthouse is suitable for independent travelers who do not need much assistance.
I do not live in the guesthouse but can be contacted if there are problems and I do try to meet new guests. I provide a professional cleaning company once a week to clean common areas, along with all bills paid, all kitchen and bathroom supplies and including free linen. Think of it like a giant share house but with less hassle and a few more perks.
Although the actual block the guesthouse is on is very ugly and so is the immediate area, it is a fantastic location if you are adventurous and prepared to walk a bit, or use public transport. It's less than 5kms from the airport - a taxi is very cheap to the house.
Thirty minutes walk or a short bus ride takes you to some very cool shops and bars in Marrickville (Marrickville Rd) or Newtown(King St).
We are fifteen minutes walk from St Peters or Sydenham train stations (1.5kms) but the buses are directly outside the door so you should experiment to see what you prefer – you can buy a weekly ticket that works on buses and trains. It's about 6kms to Central Station in the city. We are also only about 4kms from RPA Hospital.
It would take you 20 minutes to drive to the beaches or an hour by public transport. And if that's not enough you can take a 20 min walk (2 minute bus) trip to the biggest IKEA in the Southern Hemisphere just down the road from us.
Other Things to Note
To show that you have read and understood my description please include the magic word "Unicorn" in your email to me when enquiring.
PLEASE NOTE: We try our best to give you the room you booked but due to the unpredictable nature of juggling multiple guests who extend alongside upcoming new bookings you may be given a different room in the same guesthouse. If this would cause issues for you please consider other AirBnB properties. In trying to be fair we do not ask existing guests who love us to move out of rooms for new guests if a similar room in the house is instead empty
"Photos on the site may differ slightly from the actual room as we replace furniture and bedding as needed and have fun rearranging at times."
This is by no means a party place – if you would like a more social atmosphere with common areas and a backyard look at my other listings for Scruffy Old Campsie Guesthouse.
We are a strictly NON-SMOKING guest house, the nearest area to smoke is out on the street on in the lane-way!
No extra guests without permission.
No drugs and/ or drunken behavior.
From Dec 21, 2015 - Jan 03, 2016 the minimum stay is 5 nights.
The place was pretty much as described, not flash, but had everything you need, was clean, tidy and everything worked. It's beside a busy road but the ear plugs provided go a long way to fixing that.
Well it was all quite remote control really. Jody left me message with the door entry code and telling me the key of the room was in the door.
The room was Large, two beds, single and double, fans, fridge, kettle, pots, crockery, cups and tea bags. Towels, soap and ear plugs left artfully on the beds.
1 km walk to Sydenham train station from this noisy corner, thats why earplugs were supplied.
Just down the corridor was the kitchen and two bathrooms.
Calling the place rundown is a good idea as it lowers your expectations but to be fair, it was, clean, safe, roomy, well pointed with the things a traveller needs right in your room.
Hail a taxi from right outside on Princes Highway and it only costs $15 to the airport.
This place is really great value for Sydney in my opinion. It's basic but clean and has all the essential things you need for a stay in Sydney. Public transport is close by and relatively simple to use. If I come back to Sydney I would definitely stay here as it's perfect for my needs and the price unbeatable.
A nice place, easy to locate and easy to travel around town from. Worth the price but could do with better windows as the air planes from the nearby Airport are quite present. The cleaning can be somehow improved by the person who do it.
Thanks for the feedback. I agree that there is some aircraft noise but this is mentioned in the room listing and we do offer ear plugs if needed. As for the cleaning - I'm sorry this wasn't mentioned by you during your stay so I could fix the issue. I do come over and check with everyone that they are happy at least weekly and I'm always available on phone and email and it wasn't mentioned by these guests or any of the others that week. I will talk to the cleaner and see what may have been missed.
We are grandparents from San Diego, CA visiting Sydney and we were fortunate to book Jody' first BNB at this site. Our room had a refrigerator and shower with a shared bath. Jody and her manager Craig assisted us for three weeks and made our stay to Sydney successful and memorable. Thanks Jody for the memories!

About the Host, Jody
I'm a 37 year old solo mama of one boy, Elliott, who is five years old. I was looking for some way to stay home and raise my son without working long hours so I started renting out rooms in my personal house. That grew so busy I found an old guesthouse, and then another one, and now I have over 55 rooms for rent!
I live at The Rex with my son and our dogs currently. We also have a live in house manager couple, Helen and Megan who manage the Sydney business.
We're a friendly bunch and happy to help you get settled in Sydney or Tamworth and give you some local knowledge. If we are busy then we have instructions on how to check yourself in without our help and we will try and say hi during your first few days!
We love independent travellers, students and families who aren't looking for "the party scene" but want more a friendly, home like vibe. We're very LGBT friendly, love people from all backgrounds and children of all ages. The guesthouses are older style, very basic and clean with a bit of character. Most importantly the guesthouses are safe and in local areas!
