QUIET AND LUSH IN ITS OWN ACRES OF TROPICAL GARDENS at the end of a palm-lined, private, gated driveway, Hale Pono is a brand new, eco-friendly garden retreat home. In a peaceful location off the beaten track, where tropical rainforest meets the jungle on its way down to the ocean.

If you choose to fly into Kona Airport, you will have a spectacular 2 hour drive to Hale Pono with endless beautiful sights on your way home! Every island road is unique: passing desert, mountain, ocean, forests, lava-rock fields, rolling ranchlands, quaint towns and villages.

EASY ACCESS TO EVERYTHING ON THE BIG ISLAND - 25 minutes from Kilauea Volcano Park; 20 minutes from Hilo or Pahoa; 15 minutes to the ocean and great ocean hikes to hidden beaches; 30 minutes drive to surfing, taking a helicopter ride over the island, ancient petroglyphs, lava-walks and zip-lining over the waterfalls; 1 hour drive to South Point, Punalu'u and the green-sand beach; 90 minutes drive to Mauana Kea Observatory, Waipio Valley or The Parker Ranch; 2 hours drive to the West-Side of the island, Waimea or Kohala.

bicycles or rental vehicle, or just to explore and enjoy! Rides to the 'Hele-on' island bus routes - where $1 will take you on any single bus trip, from home to Hilo/Pahoa/Volcano/Ka'u or from one side of the island to the other!

HALE PONO'S EXCELLENT OHANA MEALS SERVICE CAN PROVIDE you with home-cooked daily meals and/or a grocery shopping service of your choice of available local, regular, and international groceries!

IF YOU ARE RENTING A VEHICLE, WE ENCOURAGE YOU TO rent locally, and recommend to rent an AWD vehicle or 4x4 - it will give you far more flexibility for your island adventures; scaling the Mauna Kea summit, visiting Waipio Valley and some of the wilder beaches and beauty spots.

THE HOME IS SET ON A VERY BEAUTIFUL, TRANQUIL, BUMPY lava-rock trail - 0.5 of a mile to paved road in the ocean direction and 0.7 of a mile to paved road in the volcano direction, so your 4x4 will make the drive home easier, too.

HARPERS RENTAL IN HILO RENT NEW 4X4s - WE'VE HAD GOOD rental experiences with them. The the bigger car rental companies rent soft-top jeeps which are great fun for island driving (be sure to book any vehicle well in advance). Try Aiona Rentals in Hilo for older, more affordable vehicles.

and, usually, access to wireless internet and Netflix, although the last two are dependent on the local internet service being available and it is not always reliable. There is good 4G service in the area for your smart phone.

THERE ARE SO MANY THINGS TO DO AND EXPERIENCE ON the Big Island, guests often decide to stay for several weeks to enjoy the adventures and experiences. We encourage you enjoying our wonderful island - so Hale Pono's daily rates go down the longer you stay!

  • The place is immaculate, with beautiful tropical flowers and fresh fruit to greet you. The place is also incredibly well-stocked with supplies ranging from all sorts of place settings to cooking supplies to lots of ziplocks to allow us to bring and store food on our daytrips. They also provide bottled drinking water since the tap water is not drinkable in this area.

We didn't get to meet Zoe at all while we were there, but that was fine for us as we didn't particularly need anything and felt that the privacy was great. There was good communication via email at all times. She graciously offered a lot of itinerary advice and recommendations by email. We ended up getting an intermediate SUV (not 4WD) instead of a regular car based on her description of the road to get there (part of which is in pretty bad shape) and were thankful we did.

Please do note that the house is NOT in Volcano, but closer to Keaau, which is between Volcano and Hilo. She did note that in the confirmation email too to double check we knew that that was is the case, and the location actually worked better for us since we stayed here while visiting both Volcano and Hilo. The house itself is only about a 5 minute drive from the freeway, so that was convenient too. The actual address is apparently inconsistently shown on maps, but we were able to get it to show up correctly on (website hidden) Maps and so used that with our phones for navigation and it worked very well. I would not hesitate to come back here if we go back to the Volcano area.

  • We loved our stay at Hale Pono. The location was convenient to both the volcanoes and Hilo. Driving our 4x4 to and fro was a little adventure. The accommodations were perfect – beautiful design and decoration… the best materials and supplies throughout. Way beyond expectations, we don’t think Zoe forgot a single item, big or small…. From rubber gloves to post-its, you name it, it was there… Fresh fruit and freshly-baked still warm bread were added treats. We would go so far as to say that, if we were to build a house of our own, we would do it exactly the same way! To sum it up, extremely thoughtful…. We cannot imagine a more perfect place or host.

  • This was a wonderful place, just as described. Very clean and well managed by your charming host, Zoe.

  • Very CLEAN, very nice decors and most of all friendly, thoughtful folks run this place. Zoe has responded quickly to all of my questions and although we stayed only one night, we love the place! Full kitchen, laundry room, huge front yard with a pretty drive way all you ourselves, fresh flowers, awesome Hawaiian treats, including fresh papayas awaited us as we arrived late at night.

About 30 minutes from volcano park and about 20 minutes from Hilo airport. This was our first trip to Big Island, so we stayed at a resort the rest of the time, but will definitely come back the next time. 4x4 strongly recommended! We switched to a Yukon XL last minute from a minivan and was worth it.

Did not get to experience their ohana meals, but fresh laid eggs and bread here is awesome. As a reference two families, four adults and children ages 4, 12 and 14 stayed with no problem and kids had a blast.

  • Hale Pono was just perfection in every way. The house and amenities were all one could ask for. The garden was wonderful. We awoke to the sound of birdsong in the morning and fell asleep to the chirruping of coqui frogs.
Zoe is the perfect host. She kindly picked us up at the airport as we had a late flight in. There was provisions for us and he house was very welcoming.
It was a shame we were only there for 4 nights as we would have liked to stay longer.
We loved it there, amazing place to stay, one of the best we've stayed at. Fully recommend it.

  • Zoë's hospitality really exhibited the spirit of Aloha! Her communication was always prompt, friendly, and she answered all our questions prior to our arrival. It was clear that she wanted our experience to be enjoyable from day one.

The house was very well maintained, and well supplied with linens, extra toiletries, kitchen items, even some local fruit! She even brought over some fresh scones on our first morning there. Zoë struck a good balance of being attentive to our needs, but also providing privacy and space.

As she notes in the description, the house is in a more rural area surrounded by lush vegetation. So, if you're interested in a location that feels like a "retreat," but with modern amenities, you'll enjoy it here!

  • Wow, just WOW! Hands-down the best place we have ever stayed, on the Big Island or anywhere else. If we could give it 6 stars for everything, we would. We extended our stay here because we've never stayed anywhere this good. Hale pono is outstanding, a stunning and peaceful location, in a sunshine micro-climate, an immaculate, well-equipped beautiful home, delicious gourmet food and mostly, Zoe, the hostess with the mostest! From our first contact we were so impressed with her excellent service and speedy responses. Zoe sent us the best guidebook for the island as a gift to help plan the vacation and she answered all our queries quickly with helpful hints and detail. We have been to Hawaii many times, we all agree this was the best place we've ever stayed.
In a beautiful rural jungle area, off a winding rock track lined with wild orchids and flora of all kinds, teeming with brightly-colored butterflies, dragonflies and birds. It was great to have a 4x4 but the track was much better than Zoe had described.
The home is in its own lush, beautiful well-kept grounds and has its own private gate and driveway. The only sounds to be heard are those of nature, so wonderfully relaxing. The night skyscape is completely breath-taking, no need to drive to the top of Mauna Kea (although we did!).
The home is a tribute to all of the love and care that goes into each and every visit. Spotlessly clean with tasteful and luxuriously comfortable furnishings, EVERYTHING and anything you could possibly need or want of the best quality, towels, bedding, toiletries, cookware, bakeware, huge dvd library, excellent book and board games collections, hairdryers, silverware, amazing variety of cooking supplies, stationery and on and on...all great quality and everything works, the Wifi was excellent, the TV, everything. The kids (6,9,14) loved it, when we were 'home' we never saw them, except to play cards & board games in the evening!
Zoe's cooking rivals the best restaurants on the island and she caters for allergies and special diets with great care.
When we first arrived, we settled in and after our initial 'ooos' and 'ahhhs' of of delighted discoveries, Zoe came to greet us with warmth and hugs all round. We all loved it when Zoe came over with the food, or to check in, and we always wanted her to stay longer, she is a mine of local information and one of those people everyone enjoys being around. Whatever we needed, whenever we needed it, we contacted Zoe and problem solved.
We cannot recommend Hale Pono highly enough, it was an unexpected world-class gem of a vacation rental that sets the standard for the perfect vacation accommodation. We loved it and we will be back. Thank you Zoe for making this our best-ever visit to Hawaii's Big Island, you and Hale Pono are the best!

  • The location was very rural - a great hideaway that was completely private - a tropical oasis. Needed the 4WD vehicle to get to the property from the main road, but not a big deal. The track was only about 1 mile long and fairly straight forward.
The host Zoe was lovely - nothing was too much trouble and her meals were great. The Hale Pone was immaculate and had all of the comforts of home. Be prepared for the Big Island's lack of wifi and mobile (cell) coverage - a real treat to get away from 'civilization' for a few days and to just slow down and relax - shakka as the Hawaiins say.
The location was perfectly situated for access to the Volcano National park, the town of Hilo and the South East coast.
I highly recommend staying at Zoe's and will be back at some time in the future.

  • When we first came to Halepono we noticed that the grounds were well taken care of. The house was very neat and clean. It was very beautiful and relaxing even with a two and a half year old. We found the most enjoyable part of our stay was are interactions with the caretaker and her family. Zoe was the most accomadating host we have ever had especially with our special diets which usually present difficulty for anyone trying to cook. She was always interested in our well being and enjoyment. The food was great considering it was gluten free and mostly dairy free. She even shared some of her recipies. Her daughter shared a really big bear with our son to make him more comfortable and it seems like we must have talked with her and her family for hours when they came over to drop off food or find out how things were going. Our stay was most enjoyable and we will be recommending Halepono to our friends and family and wish to return again the next time we are on the big island.

Hi, I am Zoë, a Brit who feels completely at home here on the Big Island. This amazing place with the very best people you'll ever meet, so many terrains; jungle, desert, rainforest, jungle, rolling ranchlands, snow-capped mountains and Kilauea, our very own live volcano, making the Big Island bigger every moment as lava falls steaming into the ocean; twelve of the world's sixteen weather patterns; green, black, gray and white sand beaches; the world's highest mountain (from the seabed up!), warm ponds heated by the volcano under the palms nestled by a sun-soaked ocean, snorkeling, kayaking, caving, climbing, surfing, paddle-boarding, zip-lining, hiking, swimming, farmer's markets, national parks, and so much more... delicious local foods; beauty, beauty and more beauty; magnificent waterfalls, ancient giant mango groves, the stark black lava rock, the clear blue skies and the warm waters of turquoise ocean. Giant turtles, spinner dolphins and whales who swim wild and free with us as we play in the ocean! We enjoy them all. We are family oriented with many friends and family, local and international, who often stay at our home. We enjoy a simple island lifestyle, gatherings of good company, good music, good food and we prefer to live alcohol-free and smoke-free. We have three dogs, Koa, Maui and Lilikoi, all of whom are well-socialzed and well-behaved. We're a low-tech family, no broadcast TV, no video games, although we do have the internet and Netflix for the movies we love to watch together. As a family (however many of us there are at home!) we play board games, any games, sing, write, create arts and crafts, garden, cook, bake, and spend time in the great outdoors of the Big Island, cycling, hiking, swimming, kayaking and boogie-boarding, amongst other things. We cook our food from scratch, using local or home-grown ingredients as much as possible. We encourage you to try the delicious local food whilst you are here, ours and all the island has to offer; I can heartily recommend Hilo's 'Bueno Burrito' for a a healthy, good-value meal and the best Mexican on the island, 'Bar Hime' for the best Sushi, 'Ken's House of Pancakes' for some local diner-style color and many more... COUNSELING AND COACHING: I am a UK-qualified psychotherapist specializing in intensive, short-term therapy for eating disorders and obesity; I can work with most issues (including alcohol, drugs and quit-smoking) as well as being a parenting coach, life-coach and health-coach. Please ask if you need support in moving forward in some area of your life or need to let go of something which isn't serving you anymore. If I have availability we can set up times to work together when you are here and continue when you return home, if necessary. MARRIAGES AND CEREMONY: I am licensed to officiate for all regular ceremonies in the State of Hawaii. I have a broad experience in creating profound, heartfelt, personal ceremonies for all of life's milestones and rites of passage; naming, blessings, transition into adulthood (at any age!), partnership, marriage, vow renewal, wealth creation, calling in (of an ideal partner, of a new life circumstance, etc), divorce, awake wakes, funerals and burial/spreading of ashes. You can combine any of these with your stay at Hale Pono at a separate cost. If you are interested in any of these ceremonies, please contact me to discuss further.
