Houseboat - room with queen bed

Other - Private room · Sausalito, CA 94965, United States

Comfortable private bedroom with queen-sized bed and shared bath with shower aboard a warm, inviting Sausalito floating home.

The Space

Welcome to our home! We live on a 3 bedroom/2 bathroom floating home and are lucky enough to be able to offer occasional space to travelers.

This room would best suit a single traveller or a couple, but we do also have a single-width foam mattress that can go on the floor, suitable for a child or hardy adult.

We are a child-friendly household with (mostly well-behaved) children ranging from toddler to teen, so it's best if you don't mind kids and the various noises they make. Your room is quite quiet though, and we will try to minimize the toddler drumming while you're sleeping! Since we are living here with our kids, please take the time to introduce yourself when requesting a booking, as I will only rent to travelers I feel good about inviting into our home.

When you're staying here you can relax on our patio, take a row in our dinghy and explore the famous houseboat docks. You can walk to a variety of restaurants and there is a nearby grocery store.

Guest Access

You are welcome to use our washing machine/dryer and/or prepare yourself a meal in our kitchen. In the evening we are often watching tv or playing a game and you are always welcome to join in. The other bedrooms are privately occupied, but otherwise the home is open for you to share.

Interaction with Guests

We live here with our children, so you will be in the mix with our family. We are happy to leave you to yourself if you would prefer privacy in your room, or you are welcome to join us in the evening to have a drink or watch a tv show.

We will provide a light breakfast of porridge, yogurt, toast, cold cereal, coffee, tea, and the like. As well, there is a cafe a short walk away that cooks excellent bacon and eggs for just $5. If you have special breakfast requests and let me know in advance, I can do my best to accommodate them.

The Neighborhood

The Sausalito floating home community is really unique and beautiful. We love that we have a world-class bike/running trail right at the top of our dock, that decent food is a short walk away and really excellent food is not much further. I love seeing the water when the tide is high and the variety of feeding birds when the tide is out. Before I moved here, I didn't realize that even the mud at low tide could be beautiful, but it really is like living in a nature sanctuary.

The peacefulness of nature is balanced by the proximity of the highway - if you are on the back deck and look in one direction, you wouldn't think a car existed in the world. Look the other way and see the activity of a winding road.

While you're here you should walk the docks to see all the variety of the floating homes. You should check out downtown Sausalito - just a short drive or a long walk away. You could go for a run or bike ride, and you should definitely take the world-class ferry-ride across San Francisco Bay to the city. If you feel like driving north, wine country is less than an hour away. Many people travel here specifically to see the redwood forests at Muir Woods. And the beaches offer great sunning and boogie boarding in summer.

Getting around

There is public transportation a short walk from our house, and I'm happy to help with sorting out the bus system. We are also less than a mile from the SFO Airporter shuttle drop-off. It's definitely easiest to get around with a car, but with a little determination and research, public transit can work quite well also.

There is free parking for our dock.

Other Things to Note

This is a floating home, and you need to be able to traverse a dock, gangplank and stairs to get back and forth.

We love our unique houseboat lifestyle, and are excited to share it with travelers. If you're a tourist, we're happy to help you find the best way for you to discover the area. If you're here on business, we have fast wireless internet, iron, blow-dryer - probably whatever you need to keep yourself professional.

  • It was a great experience staying in their boat house! Wonder people and a great family. Highly recommend staying here.

  • We had a great experience at Genia and Christine's. The location of the house is beautiful - we had no idea previously that people lived surrounded by water! Both Genia and Christine are warm and personable hosts, and they have a charming and very tastefully arranged house.

The general location of Sausalito also affords many opportunities for activities. Biking, hiking, kayaking, bird watching etc.,

  • We booked our stay on this wonderful floating home very last minute and Christine made sure everything was ready for us when we arrived. Both Christine and Genia were very welcoming and friendly! It was a pleasure to stay with them and their family :)

  • We plan to stay here again - highly recommend!

My 9yr old son and I loved our brief stay and wish we had more time with Genia, Christine and family. They are super cool and fun to be around, additional plus we were not expecting. The houseboat is beautiful with warm cozy atmosphere. Room and bathroom was very clean with nice extra touches; candle burning, water bottle and glasses, etc. The bed is awesome - very comfortable.

  • It has been my sister, Alexandra's dream to live in a houseboat and that bacame a reality when we
stayed with Genia and Christine. With their kids, all were perfect hosts and we felt at home instantly. Their houseboat is cozy and warm and gives you a nostalgic feeling that that is where you want to be. I would definitely want to return for another stay but I think my sister will beat me to that.

My fist experience with Airbnb was a treehouse in Ubud. Next is this houseboat in Sausalito. Great stay to unique homes with wonderful hosts. Wonder where Airbnb will take me next on my future travels.

  • Just across the Golden Gate Bridge from San Fransisco, down a narrow path between the 101 and the water, literally on the bay, floats Christine and Genia's houseboat.

My time with their family, while quite short-- 2 nights, was beyond welcoming. I found it very restful.

The room and home is exactly as described. Everything is very comfortable, clean, and quiet.

I loved waking up to look out the window, seeing water just a foot or so beneath me. I love stepping off the houseboat and the dock moving, adjusting to my weight-- that doesn't happen at a hotel. And I loved sitting on their deck, sipping tea, and enjoying the climbing warmth of the sunshine while watching birds and even a couple seals playing in the harbor.

An unexpected gift was the families hospitality. It takes a special family to welcome in travelers and make them instantly comfortable. While I'm positive it isn't easy they make it look effortless. Their kindness really meant a lot to me.

I've already recommended Genia & Christine's place to friends, it's worth checking out. I'm thankful to have found them.

  • Staying at a houseboat is a wonderful and unique experience me and my two friends enjoyed a lot. The Samson's family is a very pleasant family which made our stay even nicer. The houseboat and the surrounding area is in real life much more beautiful than on the photos. We all fell in love with this place and wish we wouldn't have to leave. On top Christina provided an excelllent breakfast with delicious fresh fruits.

  • It was a brief but wonderful stay at Christine and Genia's houseboat oasis! Their home is out of town enough to feel secluded from the highly touristy areas of downtown Sausalito and yet they were close enough to (bike) into town with a quick 10 minute ride. The beds were extremely comfortable and the space very clean. To add to the wonderful location and comfort, they have a wonderful family and provide delicious breakfast--even coffee service in your room. It was a fantastic experience!

About
Expats Afloat: Genia immigrated from Russia as a child and grew up in New York before moving to California. He speaks fluent Russian. Christine is originally from Canada and wishes her French was better. Both have been active in the arts - Genia as a musician, and Christine as an actor/theatre educator, but both currently make their living as software developers. They share their floating home with a tribe of children, ranging in age from 2 to 18 years, although probably only two or three of them will be around when AirBnB guests are over.
