West Menlo Park/Sharon Heights section of Santa Cruz Avenue. Easy biking distance to Stanford, SLAC, downtown Menlo Park, Sand Hill Rd & 280. We are less than 20 minutes walk from the northwest corner of the Stanford campus and about 35 minutes' walk from the center of campus. We are also walking or easy biking distance to downtown Menlo Park, Palo Alto, and the Stanford Shopping Center.
West Menlo Park is full of bike paths and nice, easy walks. And we’re less than a 5-minute drive from the Stanford Dish walk (approx 3 miles), a paved path through the foothills with spectacular views. And there’s lots of great hiking not much further. We love hiking; let us know if you want some area recommendations.
We’re empty nesters, have lived in the area most of our lives, and are happy to answer any questions you may have about the area or provide recommendations. This is an ideal set-up for an out-of-towner wanting to spend time with friends or family in the area.
We are walking distance to the Avy Avenue/Alameda de las Pulgas shopping area, which includes a Starbucks, U.S. Post Office, gas station, the highly acclaimed Flea Street Café restaurant, and the favorite Stanford beer-and-burger hangout, the Dutch Goose. We are also walking distance Sharon Heights Shopping Center, which includes another Starbucks, Shell station, a 24-hour Safeway, a CVS pharmacy, yogurt shop, European deli, shoe repair, travel agency, various other services, a Mexican restaurant, and the highly rated Mitsunobu Japanese restaurant.
Off-street parking is available. In case you have a larger vehicle, or prefer not to negotiate the driveway turnaround, overnight parking is allowed on our side of the street (west side) without limit. Overnight parking in the City of Menlo Park (east side of the street) is restricted, but courtesy warnings are issued before any citations.
Many of our guests are international scholars coming to teach, research or study at Stanford. Many of them prefer not to rent a car and have been happy to be walking or biking distance from campus. If you'd like to bike, we have a spare bike we can let you use at a nominal cost: $5 a day, $25 a week or $75 a month plus $75 refundable deposit. It's a medium-sized Huffy, with handbrakes.
HOUSE RULES - NO SMOKING, no exceptions. No shoes (to keep the cottage extra-clean). Recycling actively encouraged.
Our guests appreciate how clean and fresh our studio is. In order to maintain this environment for all guests, we have a strict NO SMOKING policy, no exceptions. We also ask you to respect our no shoes (to keep the cottage extra-clean). We have extra slippers if you like! And Menlo Park is a very green city; we encourage recycling, and easily meet our city's target of over 50% waste recycled.
We received a warm welcome and Laurel went out of her way to let us check-in a couple of hours early. Detailed instructions about how to get to Laurel's studio, restaurants and other services nearby, public transportation and even airport transfer information was sent to us days earlier. A copy of all the necessary information was also in the unit we rented. Better than most hotels we have been to!
When we had a question about a problem we had concerning a car we needed to leave behind for a time Laurel provided the answer and was extremely helpful and generous with her advice. I hope we get the chance to return for another visit.
I came to Stanford for major surgery and had trouble finding available and affordable housing, understandably, for my extreme situation. Laurel and Steve were so helpful to me with hospitality and receiving packages and deliveries. The apartment could not have been more perfect and well equipped for a six week stay requiring alot of privacy to deal with recovery issues. Their kindness in taking a surgical patient with a breathing disability also says so much. I am always worried about public reviews but I had such a perfect experience here, and I was blown away by their personal acceptance of my situation, which most people feel really uncomfortable with since it's so hard to explain. I'm truly grateful there are people like this in the world because insurance does not provide housing and a hotel would have been a lot less homey and comfortable. Thank you!!!
I stayed with Laurel for 10 weeks; the apartment and her hospitality were both wonderful! The studio was clean, cute, and well-equipped (from Barbara Kingsolver novels to nice knives to cook with). Laurel was always happy to provide anything I needed.
We had a great stay here! Very convenient location and the apartment has everything that you might need. Would definitely recommend to anyone looking to stay near the Stanford campus. Overall, great experience!
The place was really comfortable and well equipped. The neighbourhood was quiet and lush. I can only recommend this place though getting around in Menlo Park is much more convenient with a car as the distances are surprisingly long.
Laurel's tree house is clean and cozy.
Laurel and Steve and Danny are very friendly and responsive.
She gave me information of the parks. We went to Burgess Park. My son loves to play soccer and basketball so he loved the park. He played a lot there and also at Oval in Stanford.
I am really sorry that I couldn't see you and say bye when we come back. We were in a hurry.
I want to recommend this place and stay again.
Laurel and Steve's tree top studio was lovely! We slept like logs on the comfy bed and really liked the location!
